No private company is going to look at wider contribution to the regions economy. Local government might,

Whether the assessments make sense is a different question.

Those benefits will only be realised if the airport is a success so the commercial risk is just the same. The difference is the local authority are playing with other people’s money ie yours and mines and not answerable to shareholders for taking unacceptable commercial risks!

Ah the LBA brigade, never have a good word to say about DSA.

It wasn't a case of moving the UPS base to DSA, the intention was to build it there in the first place. That info is from a UPS manager of 35 years.

Being a UPS manager of 20 plus years, I can also confirm it was never an option to build a facility at DSA. the only discussion was of a potential Cologne rotation and that was a loose one at best

And the odds of them doing that?

Quite good given the Labour Party's decision to encourage development on brown-field sites I'd have thought

Plus a few supermarkets and some nice office units for the e upwardly mobile

You’re absolutely correct. UPS have had their base at EMA for about 25 years from the initial 757 flights.

From what I remember, the early transatlantic flights were on stretched DC8’s.

In addition, reading some of the above posts gives the impression that EMA built the new hub for UPS. I may be wrong, but whilst they obviously facilitated its construction, it is my understanding that the majority of the £138 million cost was funded by UPS?

Is that when East Midlands extended the runway.

If my information is wrong then I'll happily accept that I'm wrong. :ok:
