Basically it means that not all of the runway is usable due to objects at the end of the runway. Having looked at some images, it seems the issue has been corrected significantly.

Here is a photo of the old runway (sorry about the size, its all i could find):

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....d4893bbfba.jpg

Notice all the arrows... the actual runway markings dont start until about 1/4 of the way along the runway. This is a "displaced threshold" - landing aircraft dont touch down at the start of the strip, but about 1/4 of the way along it.

Here's the new runway:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....41a00c92a4.jpg

Not as bad as it was.. but still displaced slightly. From the charts, the physical runway is 1829 metres, but with a TORA (Take off run available) of 1690, and LDA (Landing Distance Available) of 1490m.

Aberdeen used to have a runway length of 1800m. They extended it by 200m, as flights to Spain couldnt operate direct from there and needed to refuel en-route. Obviously Carlisle is a little further south, but with the TORA available, I suspect Spain is still out of reach from CAX.

repaint?

Isn't it as common sense as just to repaint the markings over night to move the : Threshold by that amount , anyway it's still capable of taking ' E ' Jets and the new A220-100 ( C-Series ).
I doubt you need worry about Spanish flights yet ,vunless it's incoming tourism, I'm trying to think of the other , UK airport ( Think it's Newquay - ok has long Runway -, does get a lot more incoming flights than listed Destinations, However Pax can buy seats on those flights ).
If it's not there it's in that region so that maybe how Carlisle would grow .
Anyway what of the 737 max 7 all made from. Lighter material .should be able to use that strip .
Not sure about the Eastern airways ERJ jets they are tiny so may be able to use it ?.
If they join Stobart / Virgin/ Flybe then we might see more from CAX.
But can it really attract outbound holiday resort traffic when you can zip along the A69 and be in Newcastle Airport pretty quickly !.
Ditto Edinburgh.

Any locals able to give an update on progress?

Airport open..but very quiet compared to 5 years ago?

How is the planned start of schedules going..couple of months to go..

If Stobarts muck in at DTV..could that affect the CAX operation?

AS always very interesting and that’s without the Brexit effect!

Maybe that's what happens when you treat your based operators with contempt? :suspect:

CAX Operation? :ugh: Makes you wonder if Stobart have the ability to keep all these plates spinning...

SealinkBF 19th Jan 2019 16:33

Wonder if Loganair is out of the picture now that Stobart are much closer to Flybe..

SWBKCB 19th Jan 2019 18:29

When flights were first suggested, Stobart said they'd be using their Atr-42's. Then when LM where announced, the reason given was that the 340 were the right sized a/c for the routes. What would Stobart/Flybe us if LM are no longer involved?

In any case, the last announcement was flights to start "spring 2019" - it's now late January.

No reference to specific destinations on the airport's website anymore, and Carlisle removed as a destination on the Southend Airport website.

Jamesair 28th Jan 2019 16:24

Any word about the start of the scheduled services from the Management? Spring is looking increasingly unlikely now.

Seems to me the Airport is destined to remain unopened. However why go to the expense of kitting out a full terminal , extending the runway ( when the existing was perfectly adequate for their key market - GA/ RAF and Biz Jets. They even keep their own ' Stobart Jet' there
In fact it was during the conversation with the Stobart Airport' manager' bragging about offering easyJet the same deal that took then to Southend , which he likened to Carlisle, before they bought it , but also told us the aforementioned jet was being sent to Southend until works were finished .
I wonder if it ever came back.
But they were quite happy to give us the tour, including a quick ride down to the ' building site ' seems to me it was all just talk to ' impress the locals ', trouble is while plenty want it to be useable to fly to the likes of London ( to cut journey times for Holidays , I was surprised how many thought the likes of Thomson would show up, but that cannot happen ).
It's just such a waste The old terminal was shabby and not appealing ( more like an office with a roof with comfy seats and a dreamers destination aims map on the wall).
And that's going back to when building work on the terminus was still very much going on so again why spend all that public money if your going to do nothing with it.
Locals were promised by Stobart and The Council alike that they could soon be in London or Eireann quicker than current journey times .
But even if it does open, given how bad Teeside is doing , is CAX going to offer any difference?.

NorthSouth 29th Jan 2019 13:42

NOTAMs now show no ATC, no DME, no NDB and no instrument approaches until at least 31st March.

N707ZS 29th Jan 2019 14:53

EGPO in real terms DTVA isn't doing too bad. If it is Stobart who takes over operations and they don't perform the local mayor will get such a roasting from his constituents.

highwideandugly 29th Jan 2019 17:33

DTV. Not doing too bad..loosing a few million every year.Re bought with a £40 million loss to local taxpayers no flights, passengers stagnant, movements down, hotel closed,a ghost town most of the time, suspect future,Using 50% of the DTVCA residue money for the whole area to keep going for the next 10 years..

Yep..it has my confidence!

Carlisle ? Yep. Another with my full confidence!

I have the impression they now do not intend to operate commercial passenger flights from Carlisle, but haven't got the guts to tell anybody.

Yes tophat i agree but Stobart really should make a announcement either way and explain the reason why, if passenger flights are not going to operate. This is such a farce especially after last year when the flights were promised to start on 1st June and then postponed until September 1st, then stated again to start in the spring of this year but now we are in mid Febuary and still no news.

southside bobby 12th Feb 2019 22:52

There is a trend with their airport operations/businesses generally to over promise & under deliver it appears which will always be the wrong way round in business.

GrahamK 13th Feb 2019 05:20

I suspect they are keeping things close to their chest to avoid yet another backlash

I don't there ever was that intention. Simply a ruse to create a nice new truck parking / distribution centre and offices.
Classic smoke and mirrors.
