The video is quite revealing - the access by foot and the main entrance (with the canopy) leads to the Stobart Rail offices.
The entrance to the airport "arrivals" is tucked away in the corner of the building. How many pax will see the big "Carlise Airport" signage and end up getting turned away by Reception! |
Carlisle Lake District Airport made the following announcement this morning:
"We are pleased to announce that Carlisle Lake District Airport has reopened for general aviation flights today! People can now land light aircraft at Carlisle Lake District Airport between 10:00 and 17:00, seven days per week, and use the Café Stobart in the North Apron and the newly opened Borderlands Café in the South Apron." |

The following has been reported in the local press: Carlisle Lake District Airport has announced that it is cutting fuel and landing fees for general aviation (GA) customers. The move is designed to recognise the support of the GA community during the construction of the new runway and terminal at Carlisle Lake District Airport. Landing fees will be discounted at 20% for August and reviewed for September Avgas fuel will be £1.70 per litre (including VAT), commencing on Friday 10 August until Sunday 30 September Jet fuel prices will remain unchanged at market rates Stobart Café, located in the North Apron, will also offer a free tea or coffee with every purchase above £5 The latest announcement follows the airport’s reopening to light aircraft on Tuesday 7 August. Kate Willard, Head of Corporate Projects at Stobart Group, said: “These amazing offers show Carlisle Lake District Airport is well and truly open to the GA community, who have been incredibly supportive over the last few months. Our lower landing and fuel fees mean this gateway to the Lake District and the south of Scotland is even more accessible to light aircraft.” To quote a supermarket, "every little helps" but does it really make up for the 9 months closure, originally announced as 2 1/2 months? It might even induce the "incredibly supportive" Border Air Training to return. Also it might encourage the flying pigs to use the facilities. You never know! |

So quiet on this thread..is the airport actually functioning at the moment? checked the AIS. Site...a lot of restrictions up to the end of the year..anyone throw any light on progress..etc. ? |

As of 11th Oct, AIP lists ATC communications as Tower only, not Approach, which would imply that instrument approaches can't be flown. But the IAP charts are published in the AIP and there are no current NOTAMs saying the IAPs aren't available or that there are restrictions on ATC.

What is going on here? Surely Stobart are inviting trouble. Or is that what they want? An excuse to put on hold further development due to environmental concerns expressed by "The Cumbrian Community." ie no commercial aviation.

Does to me. Stobart spent big money on regional air services from SEN to MAN and GLA, only to abandon the project and move on (fair enough).
Is it just a coincidence that a certain former director lives literally around the corner from the airfield? Was CAX just a part of someone's belief that Stobart could become no 1 UK (and Eire) regional air operator? I' m not saying that commercial aviation at CAX will not happen. I just wonder how high up making it happen is on Stobart's priority list. Does the Stobart group still have a Cumbrian link? |
Don’t forget the original scheduled services were pulled very shortly before launch date. That should have given decent data on bookings and demand thus indicating whether the flights would indeed be worthwhile in the future. Don’t be too shocked if they don’t reappear even if ATC is sorted. The modest pax ‘terminal’ would be perfectly adequate for the occasional charter or a football team visiting Carlisle United for example. |
Does the Stobart group still have a Cumbrian link? I quick look at the airports FB page will reveal the reason for the public forum - there has been a serious loss of credibility locally, not helped by some insensitive social media activity. Their treatment of the local GA community in particular has been appalling |
