Aren't HIAL planning to provide ATC to all their island airports from Inverness?

Air traffic controllers could be trained at Carlisle
Airport owner Stobart Group says it wants to establish a training academy there to tackle the skills shortage in the UK aviation industry |
What planet are they living on? Train Air Traffic controllers at Carlisle? Does anyone there have any idea of the time, skills, money needed to set up as an approved EASA/CAA ATC training facility.
Secondly, what gives them the confidence for the 3rd Sept? They need more controllers and they need to be approach procedural qualified. The standard approach course these days at NATS doesn't even train proper approach procedural. If they are intending on sending their controllers on courses then good luck with that as well. NATS have no capacity, neither do Global ATS, they are busy mopping up NATS lack of training capacity. If there is a pool of Aerodrome/Approach Procedural qualified ATCOs looking for a job, I am sure they'd look slightly further afield to airfields that pay significantly more, North, East and South of Carlisle. Even Doncaster is having regular closures of ATC due lack of staff. Liverpool have a massive shortage. I'm not convinced this problem can be solved in 3 months. I really really hope someone has a solid plan and it works out. I do think it's a fantastic opportunity for the area and wish it every success. |

What is the quality of low level radar coverage from Newcastle given the distance and height of intervening terrain ? If it is good then there would seem little advantage of a dedicated radar at CAX.

Runway should have re-opened today. |
Loganair admits ticket hike to deter passengers
The airline that will operate flights from Carlisle Lake District Airport has admitted it hiked up fares to deter passengers from booking - days before it was announced flights would not be taking off as planned. Loganair said customers questioning the new prices - of about £300 for a return flight - were told the change was due to a "technical issue" and would be fixed after the bank holiday. |

Quote below from the article linked at post 487 above.
Kate Willard, head of corporate projects, said: "It was purely the air traffic control skills shortage that didn't get us over the line. Just that single thing, which is truly frustrating and I am so sorry. Everything else, including the infrastructure and construction, was - and is - on track." ‘It contains a misleading impression, not a lie. It was being economical with the truth.’ |
We received an email from airport operations just before they closed on Friday afternoon, confirming that they would reopen on Monday 4th as provisionally advised, 09:00-17:00, albeit with the host of operating restrictions. However, that was at least a start and very welcome for the microlight training school, the aircraft maintenance company, the gyroplane flying school and all the private owners who’ve been stuck for over 6 months. Then at lunchtime on Saturday, a further email arrived stating that “due to circumstance beyond their control” (sic), they would no longer be opening from 4th June. |
So even if they had controllers the schedule would have been delayed.

Perhaps there were works outstanding which they had planned to carry out overnight but will now complete by day. It doesn't necessarily mean that the AD couldn't have operated within its licence while these works were outstanding. I use the words "doesn't necessarily" though as I'm not in possession of the facts of the matter.
The treatment of the airfield tenants has been absolutely appalling - even worse than their treatment of their passenger customers. P*ss up in a brewery? They couldn't even find their way there. Shocking. := |
I refer the honourable gentlemen to all previous posts....always was ,always will be ,pie in the sky. A result...for improved surface, transportation and distribution for some at the gullible local authorities and tax payers expense.. |
Boarder air look to be ceasing from Carlisle now!
"Unfortunately, we have been forced to cease operating from Carlisle Airport due to the fact that the airport had closed for runway upgrade works and never re-opened." |
Sadly Beatts is correct, as was SWBKCB about the latest short-notice delay in opening the airport to other users, including GA. The full press release is as follows:
We received notification over the weekend that Carlisle Airport will not re-open on Monday 4th June 2018. We have been very patient over the past 7 months with the airport operator Stobart Aviation, having reviewed the options and impact on our business it’s clear that we are unable to return to flying at Carlisle Airport. We are disappointed in the way Stobart Aviation have both managed and communicated the runway upgrades. Initially the project was 6 weeks, then 2 months, then 6 months - we are now in our 7th month of this fiasco and we are not able to return to normal operations. Border Air’s Managing Director Graeme Frater said: “Carlisle Airport not being open for the past 6 months has had a detrimental effect on our business. Today we reluctantly take the decision to shut our operation at Carlisle Airport permanently.” “This is hugely disappointing for everyone, especially our customers” “We’re working hard to inform all customers and we completely appreciate the frustration this news may cause.” “All customers will be given the opportunity to fly from Cumbernauld & Oban Airports” Last week Kate Willard, Head of Corporate Projects for Stobart Group, said: “It is with enormous regret that we must advise that the launch of scheduled services from Carlisle Lake District Airport has been delayed.” Border Air have been offering flight training services from Carlisle Airport since 1991 and recently acquired by the Cloud Global Group which has seen significant investment in the business however the latest news that the airport isn’t returning to normal operations is the final straw. Graeme added, “We would like to thank everyone involved with Border Air for your patience during the past 6 months, particular praise to Kirkbride Airfield for accommodating us at short notice this year, today’s announcement will also see the end of Kirkbride Airfield as our temporary base” All staff, employees and contractors will have the opportunity to continue working within our group at either Cumbernauld, Oban or Perth Airport. We wish all staff, colleagues, friends, loyal customers and members all the best for the future. Regards Graeme Frater - Border Air |
Bit more detail here:
Long-standing flight school to leave When asked why flight schools and light aviation activities could not commence on Monday - despite not needing commercial air traffic controllers in place for their activities - Stobart Group said it was undertaking "further and final tests". Kate Willard, head of corporate projects, said: “We are taking this opportunity to conduct further and final tests on all technical and operational matters relating to the airport. This extensive process may impact some of the businesses, including flight schools, which operate out of the airport. We would therefore like to thank them for their patience, understanding and continued support for our shared project." |
This must be why they cant open, using the apron as an event for Stobart rail ;) |
Shocking treatment by a company that on the surface doesn't give a stuff about its tenants.
|
Today? Organised within a couple of days due late opening of the airport? If so..I rest my case... |
