Crew advised us on Mon ex SOU that there was a lot of crew sickness. Ours was delayed 2hr; previous crew had stayed on (bar 1) and another called in from day off. Subsequent flight was cancelled.

Bit of a tangent - this Amadeus system, is it publicly available or only to airline folk?

Scottie Dog 20th Mar 2019 20:39

Amadeus is an airlines reservations/GDS system and therefore not freely available to the public. I'm sure that it also has other back-office facilities but I only know it from the Travel Agency side of things.

Travel / aviation industry why is that?

As mentioned above, it's the live reservation system of many airlines around the world. There are many back office IT services they provide and different variations on it too depending on the customer. Some airlines use it to create the load and balance of the aircraft for dispatch as well as all other aspects such as live excess charging at airports etc.

Wikipedia actually gives a good, concise description of what a GDS is and for:

You can subscribe as a non-airline agency and use their API to search for flights, same with Sabre. Fees are quite hefty though.

If you're just interesting in flight data you'd be better playing with the likes of SkyScanner which has a free, not-for-profit API tier:

Here's a handy chart from AltexSoft:

Not sure if this is already on here.... but heard yesterday that FlyBe are going down the A220 route. Starting MAN > LHR & LGW.

cornishsimon 26th Mar 2019 08:10

Any source for this information ?

100 or 300 variant? Also lhr I can understand but Gatwick? The A220 is definitely proving popular!

The A220 is a nice aircraft. Aren’t BE still planning on adding a further 4 E175’s to the fleet between July and December?.

If true, a game changer for SOU!

Startledgrapefruit 26th Mar 2019 09:25

Nothing in local news about a new batch of aircraft orders.
But makes sense for a relauch , nice aircraft and passengers like new "Jets" rather than "old props"

And you'd like to think that Bombardier (for whom I think Flybe has been the largest Q400 Customer globally?) would be prepared to do deals to get them onboard

Isn't all the sales stuff done by Airbus though? Will be interesting to see if this order happens in which aircraft type it replaces. Embraer or Q400.

I'm not going to lie and say it's credibly sourced... but I network with people higher up in MAG and also in the aircraft leasing world. The two nuggets of information came separately... not sure if they're linked. It's a rumour network after all...

Also have to feel sorry for the Stobart Air staff working out the Isle of Man, they have been asked to re-apply for jobs with Flybe if they wish to remain with the IOM base... and they've been told it'd involve occasional night stopping which doesn't fit well for most of them here that aren't use to it - young families etc. (I know this because one of my companies has just interviewed a few of them looking for new jobs in a different sector).

Thats standard is it not? Yeah the Stobart base is closing and the crew I believe been offered transfer to SEN. Some crew are coming back to Flybe - some are not due to visible tattoos ( Flybe policy atm).

As for nightstop’s - heard this rumour believe it’s only on a weekend and not every night. ( IF does happen)

EI-BUD 26th Mar 2019 11:36

So if the above rumours are true re A220 and MAN to London routes; I'm struggling to see what has changed since Little Red was operating in respect to Virgin's potential volume of connecting traffic? It didn't work then, what will make it work now? This route has limited point to point and in that respect is well serviced by BA, not to mention slot availability and cost at LGW and LHR.

Stobart is heavily invested with Embraer now and they potentially will proceed to add more complexity and cost to the fleet when it would appear streamlining it would seem more logical.

with a large fleet of q400s and a 'supposedly' loss making network, I'd have expected to see a route network restructure aligned to the stated objectives of providing network feed to VS and I'd guess the maintenance of the profitable routes. If that is completed there still is a large fleet to find meaning work for and now they are about to add extra aircraft and a new type ... the mind boggles ...

It's either very "brave" or somebody with deep pockets is implementing a long term, game changing strategy. Is that likely to come out of the current Virgin/Stobart/Flybe organisations?

mullac30 26th Mar 2019 12:23

Red Wings A220s were meant to go into production very soon before the lease agreement was canceled, perhaps Connect are picking them up at the last minute from Red Wings' leasing company.
