Orly started today and on its way back now with the Southampton operated in between.

Not sure what is happening to Newquay but now showing 4 per week only all the way to September with no Saturday service until then. Why would you operated 4 per week in August and daily in October?

I can't say I am surprised given that it was always an odd route to operate daily (as they originally planned) with no useful connections at either end of the route and little demand for business travel.

A weekend leisure operation would have made more sense, the J41 must be a money pit.

Any idea why East Mids appears in the drop-down on the Internet site?

In the app it is just in the Holidays section.

Geneva for the winter perhaps? They fly from there to numerous points in UK and perhaps see a hole in their coverage in the Notts, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire area.

Air Atlanta appear to be operating inbound cargo flights from Dammam reasonably regularly now, usually a split load with Liege. There's another one today.

Without betraying commercial or security confidence can anyone shed light on what is being shipped in? I thought perhaps fresh produce, but you don't tend to see fruit and vegetables labelled as being Saudi Arabian origin.

Just curious (not after nicking business!!).

Given the density of steel coil it isn't typical of what you expect to be flown. In my experience air cargo tends to be more skewed towards volume than weight.

Must be pretty 'special' steel. Perhaps time to stop asking questions!

Apparently each coil almost weighs 10T, usually around 8-10 on each flight.

That leaves a heck of a lot of fresh air on the main deck! But the 747, and I guess possibly the 777 are the only two types readily available that could handle that tonnage.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the insight.

No problem, It certainly does, one thing I’m uncertain on is the Saudia Cargo 744’s come direct from Dammam, but Air Atlanta 744’s have a stop in Leige?

It's a long turn round at LGG so one assumes it's a split load, but with up to 100 tonnes coming off at EMA there can't be much being unloaded there.

Assumptions 10 tonnes high grade steel arrives on a 747 freighter in Saudi colours from Liege and assumed cargo originates from the desert.

Liege is far more likely the source, it’s very close to some of the worlds specialist metal foundries whilst the North Midlands has some of the leading finishing companies and fabricators on the doorstep of Donnington.

Perhaps the just in time has slipped at a car factory. Nissan gets trainloads of this steel coil or similar from a local port in the North East.
Is the Birmingham runway long enough for heavy freight?

Air Atlanta do a lot of flying out of Liege so it’s likely a crew change there

Rutan16,

Don't think it would be Liege originating steel, its only a short drive from Liege area to Nottingham, I can do it by car including Eurotunnel in nine hours, a truck would obviously take a little longer (when I worked in logistics our drivers could do Birmingham / Aachen in 12 hours and that using the ferries) but still I can't see a significant benefit in flying as opposed to trucking from that area provided there are no issues with the train, ferries or customs. Moreover the steel works at Herstal, about 20 minutes from Liege Airport is largely derelict now, not sure if it is still in production. Of course it could originate from further away.

N707ZS

BHX runway is actually slightly longer, by a few metres, than EMA and quite often, if not regularly handles 747 freighters already.

I reckon crew change might be the most likely.
