Worth pointing out that there will be many more PAX than the "5%" covered by ATOL protection. As an example I've about 30 parties in resort booked on MON return flights, all covered by our ATOL, not Monarch's. Hence the reason for the seemingly large number of rescue planes.

Going to be a very long week. Condolences to all the staff at Monarch.

Gutted.

Feel for all the staff. Hopefully most get taken on by an airline not backed by vultures and with better management.

CAA Media Release:

CAA launches flying programme to bring 110,000 customers back to UK in response to Monarch Airlines administration

Monarch Airlines has ceased trading with immediate effect, leaving 110,000 customers overseas and in the region of 300,000 future bookings cancelled

2 October, 2017

Monarch Airlines has ceased trading with immediate effect, leaving 110,000 customers overseas and in the region of 300,000 future bookings cancelled
Government has asked CAA to charter more than 30 aircraft to bring back to the UK Monarch Airlines customers currently overseas

Monarch customers in the UK and yet to travel: don't go to the airport.
There will be no more Monarch flights

Monarch customers abroad: everyone due to fly in the next fortnight will be brought back to the UK at no cost to them. There is no need to cut short your stay

All affected customers should check new website monarch.caa.co.uk for more information

All future Monarch Airlines bookings, including flights and holidays, have now been cancelled following a decision by the company's board to stop trading. This is the UK's largest ever airline to enter administration.

As all of Monarch's flights due to depart from the UK have now been cancelled, customers should not go to their UK airport. Affected customers still in the UK should check monarch.caa.co.uk for further information.

Due to the unprecedented number of UK consumers currently overseas who are affected by this airline administration, the CAA and Government are securing a fleet of more than 30 aircraft, flying to more than 30 airports, to bring 110,000 people back to the UK at no cost to them. This is the equivalent of operating, at very short notice, one of the UK's largest airlines.

The CAA has a dedicated website monarch.caa.co.uk, which is the best source of advice and information for affected customers, and a 24 hour helpline (0300 303 2800 from in the UK and Ireland, and +44 1753 330330 from overseas) to provide additional assistance.

Customers currently overseas should check monarch.caa.co.uk for confirmation of their new flight details which will be available a minimum of 48 hours in advance of their original departure time. This website will be frequently updated with the latest information. Customers currently overseas shouldn't go to the airport unless their flight back to the UK has been confirmed on monarch.caa.co.uk

Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of the CAA, said:

“We know that Monarch's decision to stop trading will be very distressing for all of its customers and employees.

“This is the biggest UK airline ever to cease trading, so the Government has asked the CAA to support Monarch customers currently abroad to get back to the UK at the end of their holiday at no extra cost to them.

“We are putting together, at very short notice and for a period of two weeks, what is effectively one of the UK's largest airlines to manage this task. The scale and challenge of this operation means that some disruption is inevitable. We ask customers to bear with us as we work around the clock to bring everyone home.

“We urge people affected by the company's collapse to check our dedicated website monarch.caa.co.uk for advice and information on flights back to the UK. It also gives information to those passengers that have future bookings with Monarch but are yet to leave the UK.”

The CAA will be providing regular updates as our flying programme develops.
-ENDS-

Notes for editors

All future Monarch bookings, including flights and holidays, have now been cancelled following a decision by the company's board to appoint joint administrators, which has resulted in the airline ceasing to trade.

Customers currently overseas shouldn't go to the airport unless their flight back to the UK has been confirmed on monarch.caa.co.uk. Once their new flight details have been confirmed, we recommend that customers aim to arrive at check-in three hours in advance of their new flight time as check-in is likely to take longer than normal.

Customers will not be able to request to fly back to the UK earlier than the date of their original flight with Monarch. The vast majority of customers' new flights will be at the same time or later than their original booking, so they should continue to enjoy the rest of their holiday.

Monarch customers who haven't yet started their holidays should check whether they have an ATOL certificate for their booking. Customers holding an ATOL certificate issued by Monarch should check monarch.caa.co.uk for more information about how to claim a refund for their flights or holidays. Customers holding an ATOL certificate issued by another travel agent or tour operator should check with whoever they booked their holiday or flights with, for more information about what happens next.

Customers whose future travel is not protected by ATOL should check with their travel insurer, or - depending on how they paid for their holiday - their credit card or debit card issuer, in the first instance.

The CAA's dedicated 24 hour helpline (0300 303 2800 from in the UK and Ireland, and +44 1753 330330 from overseas) is available to provide additional assistance to customers.

The CAA is the UK's specialist aviation regulator. It ensures the aviation industry meets the highest safety standards; protects consumers by making sure they have choice and value and are treated fairly; drives improvements in airlines and airports' environmental performance and ensures industry manages security risks effectively.

ATOL is the UK's holiday financial protection scheme and costs £2.50 per protected customer. It stands for Air Travel Organiser's Licence and by law every UK-based travel company that sells air holidays has to have an ATOL licence.

Previously, the largest ATOL company to stop trading was XL Leisure Group in 2008, which had 43,000 people abroad at the time of the administration.
People who've booked ATOL protected holidays will be protected by the scheme. That means passengers already abroad will be flown home at no extra cost and will be able to claim for certain expenses they incur as a result of this administration. ATOL protected passengers yet to travel will receive a full refund.

More information about the ATOL scheme is available fromATOL | Pack peace of mind

Monarch Airlines Ltd
Monarch Holidays Ltd (ATOL Number 2275)
First Aviation Ltd (ATOL Number 4888) previously trading as Monarch Airlines

If you are due to depart from a UK airport with Monarch Airlines today or in the future, please do not travel to your UK airport as your flight will not be operating.

If you are currently abroad and due to return to the UK on or before 15 October 2017 we are making arrangements for you to return home to the UK on a new flight, at the end of your holiday. These new flights will be at no extra cost to you.

We will of course prioritise vulnerable passengers, including unaccompanied minors, and make sure that family groups travel on the same flights.
For further advice and details of your new flight please read I am currently abroad.

If you are currently abroad and due to return to the UK after this date, please read the additional information section.

Customers yet to travel out of the UK

Terrible news.

My best wishes for all those affected. There will be opportunities for a great many as the global shortage of professional pilots begins to get traction, but that's small comfort for those with families, mortgages, and training loans to service.

I've always had a great respect for Monarch, and it's deeply sad to see what can happen to a company with what appears on the surface to have been a reasonable prospect of resurrection.

The sad fact is that there are tectonic plates in motion in our industry, and the defence of our noble profession is becoming increasingly difficult with some of the dark forces and less palatable personalities intent on reducing us to machine operators.

Farewell Monarch. In this cut throat industry, it's devastating sad when it's the good guys whose necks are the ones that are wrung.

To All At Monarch,

I think I can say from the majority of airline staff, we are all so very sorry it has come to this. Having been at the end of the stick several times its very worrying. I wish the very best to all those involved and will probably end up flying with some of you. Good luck.

Swaffield’s letter to staff in full:

This is the update I hoped I would never have to write. Despite our best efforts, today Monarch Airlines Limited and Monarch Travel Group (Monarch Holidays) are ceasing operations and going into administration.

Soon you will hear from the administrator, KPMG, who will now be running these two entities in administration and will explain what this means for all of us who work for either company.

Please note that Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited continues to operate normally and is not entering administration.

Our owners, Greybull Capital, showed great courage when they bought us in 2014 and have provided us with continuous support. We had a turnaround year in 2015.

But since then, outside influences have badly affected us. Since 2015 we’ve seen yields collapse by a quarter, resulting in £160 million less revenue.

This has especially affected Spain and Portugal which is 80% of our business. This year the airline is carrying 14% more passengers than last year for £100m less revenue.

The root cause is the closure, due to terrorism, of Sharm-El- Sheikh and Tunisia and the decimation of Turkey.

Despite these challenges we managed to cut £40 million out of our cost base by reducing overheads and being more efficient and wasting less, however the yield reductions have turned our airline from one that made £70 million profit in 2015 to one that made a £60 million loss in 2017 and was scheduled to lose over £100 mililon in 2018.

We asked a respected aviation consulting firm to review how we could improve our short haul network and they came to the conclusion that it was pretty much out of our control.

At the same time we built our long haul plans and asked them to validate these plans, which they did, and agreed that they were attractive and viable.

The next challenge was how to pivot our airline from short haul to long haul to reduce losses. We decided to ask KPMG to run a sales process to see if anyone would be interested in taking on all or some of our short haul operations or assets.

This would have allowed us as Monarch to start long haul flying in spring of 2018. Regrettably although there was considerable interest, there was no deliverable offer, and so we have run up to the 30 September Atol renewal deadline without a viable plan for the next twelve months and the CAA has understandably been unable to license us.

As a consequence of this we lost any prospect of avoiding an insolvent liquidation and have been left with no option but to file for insolvency and cease operations.

Unlike many other countries, the UK does not offer a viable insolvency track for airlines to keep operating during administration and so we were forced to cease operations.

Millions of customers have flown and holidayed with Monarch over the last 50 years. I am so sorry that thousands now face a cancelled holiday or trip, possible delays getting home and huge inconvenience as a result of our failure.

We are working with the joint administrators and the CAA to do everything we possibly can to help minimise disruption where we can, but are under no illusion as to the problems this will cause.

And many suppliers will suffer hugely as a result of our insolvency – for which I am equally sorry.

Many of you have spent years working for this company and I want to thank you again for your service and loyalty. I am truly sorry that it has ended like this.

You can all hold your heads up high and be proud of what you achieved at Monarch. It has been a company that has cared for its customers and which has been like a family for many people for five decades. I cannot tell you how much I wanted to avoid this outcome and how truly sorry I am.

I wish you all well in your future careers and hope you will all retain a fond memory of the spotty M and all it stands for.

The MAEL team will be doing everything possible to ensure that our engineering business survives and prospers and carries forward the Monarch name with pride and dedication to professionalism and service.

Thank you and I wish you well, wherever you are based.

I hoped this day would never come and I didn't think it would, until 2014. Really sad to see this happen and my condolences to all involved.

I will admit, the Monarch thread was always active ever since I came here in 2011, but ever since Greybull took over it Was very quiet compared to that time.

I wonder if the CAA will now reveal if the Mysterious "Shadow Airline" in 2016 was for Monarch Indeed? I'm sure this is not the end of the story about that just yet.
