SOUTHEND 5

As you correctly say the year-on-year decrease is due to the withdrawal of the 4th easyJet aircraft this year. Otherwise the August numbers would be almost identical to those of last year. That would still be disappointing though as most other airports have seen considerable growth.
There are vague rumours concerning new operators coming to SEN (aren't there always) but nothing that I consider sufficiently reliable to post here.

A total of 94,290 passengers used Southend in August down 22 per cent on last year. The rolling 12 month figure is 963,055 down 12.7 per cent

One thing for sure, coming out top and winning the vote from passengers in the Which passengers survey has not made the slightest difference to Southend's fortunes while the worst two performers just continue to grow with double digit growth even though surveys would suggest that passengers are not too impressed to say the least.

SEN lacks "critical mass" as an airport with insufficient destinations and operators to attract consistent growth following the initial surge. A runway too short to accommodate the leading short/medium range airliner in service will always be a handicap.
However SEN does have the twin advantages of a location fairly close to London and a direct train service from within 100 metres of the terminal building. The reasonable success of the Maribor route shows that there is potential for niche routes (Maribor is a really narrow niche!), and the Mediterranean destinations remain popular.
Surely Eastern European and Scandinavian destinations are worth trying....? Failure to grow to the 2 million target by 2018 will surely mess up Stobart's business plan though, so they need to get that fourth EZY Airbus back and attract two or three new operators (including at least one significant carrier) fairly soon, I'd have thought, or a profitable future will elude them.

Surely the provision of controlled airspace around SEN must still be seen as a 'good thing' wouldn't you say, from a safety viewpoint?

bad Bear, there is notihng n'complicated' about SEN's class D. It works well with the ATC people doing a good job of keeping the local GA, the commercial movements and the passing through traffic all happy, safe and seperated. If you pass through you might be asked to change heigh or routing briefly, sureley thats better than a big orange lump of metal in your windscreen.
If anything I'd say the complicated thing is all the GA pilots routing round the edge of the zone and creating pinch points when they're more likely to get a better and safer service if they call up for a zone transit. SEN's class D isnt as busy as say STN and youre not going to get the 'avoid controlled airspace' standard patter that Essex Radar gives out.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the situation.
There was considerable objection from the private flying lobby to the establishment of these new areas of controlled airspace, perhaps understandably, and their objections resulted in a reduction in its extent when it came into force.

I think that Southend got a real boost few years back when LTN and STN went out of favour a bit.
Now that FR are greatly increasing Ryan Air flightsat STN and Easy Jet seemingly signalling they want to base 30 at LTN building up each year I think for the time being Southend may suffer a bit.
Sure it will come full circle and Southend will see big expansion again in the future.

Just for the record there were an average of 28 daily ATMs in August plus other commercial movements and regular instrument training most days. You have your opinion on this subject, which I respect, and I have mine so I think we shall just have to agree to differ.

The SEN website is showing two flights to Pau-Pyrenees on today's Departures page (LG7953 at 1435 and LG7955 at 1955). Does anyone know anything about these?

LUXAIR FLIGHTS
I would suggest that they are connected to the Rugby World Cup - French supporters returning from a weekend in London. Luton has had quite a number of charters from France connected with the Rugby WC including one from Pau which was operated by a Travel Service B737-400. These could be the returning passengers on Luxair aircraft as the Travel Service aircraft may not be available. Hope this helps.

Adria Airways (JP, Ljubljana) has announced it will suspend its Maribor-London Southend operations with effect from September 30 until at least spring of next year.
The service launched in June on a seasonal basis with a decision on its shift to a year-round operation expected after the first three months.
As such, reports indicate that while the 3x weekly service has generated a small loss, Adria is still considering resuming it again next year.

I see that SEN has won the 'Which?' best airport award for the third time running. Congratulations to all the staff who contributed to that achievement. Let's hope it produces some tangible results over the next few months.

Great to see Luxair willing to sample the advantages of London Southend for these charters. Hopefully a few more airlines will gradually realise it does not have to be all about the queues/service levels at other London airports. Southend is well known as a diversion airport - a significant range of pre-planned ad-hoc charters could also be easily accommodated.
Airport of the year 3rd year running - Great news also!

Indeed it is good news to be top, but I'd still rather have new airlines/routes.

Interested to find out what their "innovative marketing approach" is. Guessing it relates to the new TV advert they have made.

Red Four, the thing with ad-hoc charters is that generally you really need to be flying to wherever is convenient to the purpose, and on that count SEN is at a disadvantage.
Should West Ham ever get into the Champions League SEN will undoubtedly benefit. Other than that, I think it will be slim pickings of occasional groups heading into Central London and the likes of Bolton heading to Millwall.

As I cannot be bothered to trawl through endless rambling on this thread, is this news?
Easyjet will launch a new year-round service between London Southend and Paris Charles De Gaulle next year.
The route will operate four-times weekly and is scheduled to start on February 26.
Outbound service EZY7419 and return leg EZY7420 will both operate on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.
As the flight timings appear to change from week-to-week, passengers are advised to check Easyjet's website.
Neil Slaven, Easyjet's commercial manager, said: "There is a growing demand for short and long breaks in Paris and we are able to make it convenient to reach both sides of the route and to provide value for British and French consumers."
Easyjet said it expects to fly 50,000 passengers between the two airports each year.
