I was curious to see a BA branded aircraft at SEN this afternoon and it appears from the airport website that this was a lunchtime diversion from Edinburgh. Does anyone know the reason?

Yes - I see that according to the BA website BA8707 from Edinburgh and 8754 form Madrid were also diverted to SEN this evening. Great to see that BA Cityflyer make such a jolly good choice of airport for some of their diverted flights.

Southend diverts tonight
There was also a cheeky flyBE dash 8 diverted making a total of only 3 accepted when it became "full". I cannot understand why when they have 10 new stands plus at least another 2 by the old terminal. It is not as if the airport is that busy having lost the DUB flyBE flights as well as some EZY and Stobart Air services.
Let's see what tomorrow brings as the strong winds are forecast again. Ironically the winds were stronger at SEN than LCY today but all SEN flights got in ok. I think LCY had problem with cross winds

On another point - I see that there is large billboard advertising at Rayleigh Station regarding Flybe's Stansted services -and Rayleigh is just three stops along from SEN. And the billboard includes STN -NQY - ouch!! What a shame that they could not have operated NQY from SEN again this year.

the reason its full is that two of the new stands are not in use because of 1. The surface break up and 2. the tank that takes the aircraft anti icing because they have not got any other means to get rid of it. Thats 20 per cent of stands not in use which has been the case since 2013 !!
The old terminal can be used for parking but........................ it means the security restricted zone has to be moved . Too difficult perhaps !
if they had made all airside restricted like other UK airports they could accept a few more. Once again finances probably dictate that its too expensive even though good revenue could be achieved with diversions.

As far as I'm aware of the ten contact stands only stand 9 is out of service. As you say this is due to the surface breaking up and it is indeed surprising that this has not been rectified after all this time. Stand 12 (there is no stand 11) is sometimes used for diversions and the pax are normally bussed to arrivals, although this takes some time in the case of a full EMB-190 and I don't know why they don't walk the pax.
How much revenue do airports actually earn from diversions? Presumably somebody has crunched the numbers and worked out that the potential extra revenue isn't worth the additional cost (presumably??)
I don't believe SEN missed out on any LCY diversions yesterday. The LCY arrivals board showed only nine diversions all day and according to the posts above SEN took four of them, one around midday and three (out of six) in the evening. Amongst those that did not use SEN were the Alitalia and Swiss flights but I suspect SEN does not feature in their diversion plan .
The evening diversions may have been partly the result of long holding times. It looks as though a patch of difficult weather may have moved through LCY during the evening peak possibly causing some go-arounds and second approaches and then delays built up as a consequence. There was no need for diversions after this period. It seems to me unlikely that SEN declared itself full, but I don't know as I was not there.
It would not have made any difference yesterday.

I did hear yesterday evening that SEN did actually declare itself unable to accept additional diversions; the only one I know of suggested as being affected was a LH EMB-190.
I used to get very annoyed that SEN doesn't these days try very hard to accept the maximum number possible at any given time, but I suppose it makes only a minimal difference to profitability in reality. It's really the apparent 'jobsworth' attitude of their Operations department in this context which I find disappointing.
Of the couple of BA diversions they received today one was in fact an aircraft which had diverted to SEN yesterday which attempted to position back to LCY only to have to carry out two go-arounds and then return to SEN. Three Cityjet RJs diverted to STN today, presumably as the crosswind at SEN was as bad as that at LCY at the time.

All BA DUB-LCY services have arrived early today according to BA so it would appear that maybe your info is wrong unless their website is incorrect. Also that flight number is for a LCY departure and again they have all arrived early in Dublin.

According to Anglia & Thames Valley Bus Forum:
Presumably to fix the no trains for early / late departures issue?
'Coach and Bus Week' reports that the Stobart Group has applied for an Operators Licence for two vehicles so as to commence running a service between London and Southend Airport.
