The 29% annual increase in total aircraft movements was for April - available in Table 3 here and here.

Comparing the stats, about half of the increase was due to 'Other Flights by Air Transport Operators' jumping from 0 to 234. These are non-revenue flights by aircraft flying in/out for maintenance, refuelling etc. They don't include commercial operators positioning an aircraft to operate a commercial service. I suspect most of these will be movements of Cobham aircraft between Bournemouth etc and DTV. This may be a one-off increase. An extra eight movements a day is a lot! It could also be an administrative quirk or error, e.g. someone deciding to recategorise movements from one box to another.

Approximately the other half of the increase was in the aero club category. Numbers of light aircraft movements in the month of April tend to vary a lot from one year to the next because of weather. Not sure if April 2016 was a particularly good VFR month on Tees-side (or Apr 2015 a particularly bad one) but if it was, that would explain the increase.

There are no non-commercial movements figures for May yet - the provisional figures only relate to air transport movements and pax.

Good explanation..me thinks the CAA statistics department need a kick up the proverbials,or as is the case these days ,a massive golden handshake!!

The other flights section. 0 To 234 rings a few alarm bells?

I understand that the CAA have introduced a new database for the reporting of air movements. This explains why we are still awaiting data for June and July that is now overdue.

I suspect that any change in category is probably down to a change in the reporting methodology.

The categorisation of movements is, I understand, up to the reporter. I've seen strange-looking jumps in that 'Other Flights by ATOs' category before, which the CAA, on investigation, has found were errors by the reporting airport.

An error looks likely in this case because DTV saw only 23 movements in that category in the whole of 2013, 5 in 2014, and 2 in 2015. There was only 1 in the first three months of this year.

interesting to see the proposed "super' air ambulance and facilities plan .If approved and funding obtained, how, will that affect one of DTVs revenue stream?
Can't remember where we are with the PASU and the plans to relocate eventually. Maybe a joint super helicopter operation somewhere?
On the positive side less noise nuisance for the new housing residents of DTV south !

More Masterplan fun and games in today's Gazette. Supposedly a 'tough talking' body will be holding Peel to account. But it's full of local councillors and they will never really hold Peel to account.

Don't know what's stirred the Gazette's interest, but isn't this the story that Beefer drew our attention to in post 1094?

Do the GNAA's re-location plans include the helicopter operations? Not very clear. Also, they mention looking at several sites - is DTVA in the running? Don't think the police plans have changed, but their timescales appear 'flexible'.

With credit to DTVM, some more promising news:

Gazette are on the ball.
http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/te...sides-11802663

Regarding a combined air ambulance and police base question raised earlier.
One of the local residents who was a paramedic until recently at the air ambulance mentioned that the air ambulance charity didn't want to be in the same building as the police, due to various reasons.
Charity will be moving away from the airport, and they have various locations in mind according to the press reports on tv.

The DTV police base is closing. It was only kept open this year while awaiting the 4 new planes which are on order a local bobby said.
Google says the new planes are to be based at Peels Doncaster Sheffield and the police have been advertising for pilots to fly the new planes.
NPAS award Fixed-Wing Aircraft Contract | NPAS

As for the spin merchants Peel, they are only interested in house building. Its taken a lot longer to close DTV than Sheffield, but they own most of the DTV shares now, so its only a matter of time.
The councils will approve the house building application as its more council tax revenue for them to spend on themselves and their expenses

While browsing Google this page popped up from the Homes and Communities Agency in London...Not heard of them before.
It looks like a few questions have been asked about DTV land.

Cost of operating holiday flights

It was interesting to read the article in the Gazette this evening. I also read a linked article to an interview with the MD. In that article he mentions that holiday flights might be something which happens in the future if the commercial opportunity was there. Presumably, this means that the airport would make money from the flights rather than just facilitate them - and presumably this means that the volume of flights would need to equal that of a tour operator basing an aircraft at the airport?

I'm struggling to see how, with similar scheduled operations, Humberside airport are able to offer holiday flights and Teesside are not. Perhaps this policy is pushing people to use KLM to connect in Amsterdam (although when flying from the airport a couple of weeks ago I noticed people en route to Nice, Berlin and Paris).

There's a great deal of talking down the airport on this thread, and accusations of an ulterior motive on Peel's part. Could it be that the people who are in charge just aren't good enough to make more of the airport than is currently being done? For instance, some people in the area I've spoken to didn't realise you can still fly from Teesside!! That said, despite any shops or retail experience on offer, I find the customer service at the airport to be excellent and prices in the lounge quite affordable - despite the £6 PFF - so someone is doing something right.

I think it's simplistic, among other things, to say there's no money in the area etc but if people from the North East are prepared/forced to travel to Manchester/East Midlands for some flights, surely it could be possible for the airport to compete for airlines providing flights at attractive prices. Surely bucket and spade routes wouldn't provide too much competition with scheduled operations. Anyway, I digress into the same suggestions that have been provided many times before. Just can't help but question some of the commercial decision making that perhaps has more to do with 'saving the airport' rather than 'growing the airport'.

Had Humberside still been part of MAG, I suspect that we might be in a simular situation to DTV. Leaving the MAG group in 2012 was the best thing for the airport from a financial stand, heres what the accounts were like before and after... https://companycheck.co.uk/company/0...ies-house-data

Since then, green shoots have started to appear. We now have Thompsons back, Palma summer only, then from Oct Tenerife starts and will operate year round (The first charter to have done so for around 8 years). We also have new routes to Billund and Aalborg operating twice per week.

How Humberside manages to run charters and DTV im not sure, but what I have noticed, is that many charters operate on Saturdays, when Amsterdam is only twice daily and Aberdeen does operate. Mon-Fri, the departure boards from HUY and DME are pretty much the same, but today for instance we have these charters, in addition to 2 Amsterdam flights:
8.25 to Venice (BA Cityflyer, one off charter)
9.00 Balkan Holidays to Bougras (A321)
11.10 Jersey (Flybe DH8 or E170)
12.35 Alicante (BA Cityflyer)
14.45 Palma (BA Cityflyer)
Not sure if the airport has encouraged charters to operate on Saturdays or if this is just how its worked out, but it probably means that can make more money than just 1 flight, where extra staff and resources would only needed for 2 hours? Don't get me wrong, Humberside is still a struggling little airport, with stagnated passenger numbers (around 230,000 pa) and is not likely to get back to its peak of 2006ish anytime soon, but at least there seems to be green shoots. We have a new airport hotel opening in a few months time as well.

So how do Peel allow once a week flight to Jersey but deny Thomson maybe three or four flights in the same week?

I seem to remember it having to do with fire cover.
F70s and Dash 8s don't need as much as 737, so they save money by cutting the fire cover.
I maybe wrong.

Regarding the Air Ambulance, the helicopter operation isn't going anywhere, from what I recall the article I read suggested that a non-operational aspect would be moving elsewhere, but it was mostly some kind of big innovative expansion more than anything.

I presume if a A330, for instance, lands at MME, fire cover is required maybe on O/T.

Depends on what's is on board, but I believe one off charters they can accommodate.
Pretty pathetic really!

It does seem a bit peculiar how something similar to HUY hasn't/can't be delivered from Teesside. If fire cover is the issue, why can't E-jets be sourced for charter flights - like that provided at HUY? It seems from reading the Gazette articles that there are lots of excuses for the state of flight operations but not many solutions, which other airports have clearly found. From services provided in the past, and the volume of flights from NCL and LBA, is it really the case that there couldn't be weekly flights to Alicante, Palma, Málaga etc?

The GNAAS website says:

Several sites in the Darlington and Tees Valley area are under consideration for the new base, which would bring the charity’s operational crew and its fundraising and administrative staff under one roof.

Hmm, fair enough. I was once told the GNAA would lose too much in donations if they moved their core base away from DTVA, although I'm not sure why this would matter.

Silver lining is with the airport being full up the hangar wouldn't stay empty very long.

Ref. GNAAS, moving to Fishburn might perhaps fit the bill, they have the facilities and are quite central.
