SOUTHEND - 4
The reason for the decrease in the DUB numbers is almost certainly that the Feb 2013 figures were inflated by the large numbers of supporters travelling for the rugby international. Feb 2013 was actually 48% above the previous month. So no cause for concern I would say.
it has been reported elsewhere that EZY LGW-KRK traffic has been in decline and that one possible cause is the SEN route which started only nine months ago. Not ultimately provable I suppose but it does suggest EZY think they have too much capacity on LON-KRK

The February CAA figures show 1,001,317 total passengers for the rolling year. The first time ever SEN has exceeded one million passengers in twelve months. They just need to get additional airlines and routes now to climb towards their 2 million annual target.

Southend is actually more convenient than Gatwick, if you can fly into there, if you are going to East Kent, but not too many people have realised that yet.
Canterbury - LGW 1 hr 12 mins, SEN 1 hr 24 mins, STN 1 hr 25 mins
Folkestone - LGW 1hr 10 mins, SEN 1 hr 30 mins, STN 1 hr 31 mins
Maidstone - LGW 44 mins, SEN 1 hr 3 mins, STN 1 hr 4 mins
And even from East London, SEN still doesn't quite win (and gets worse further into London when compared to STN):
Canary Wharf - STN 42 mins, SEN 53 mins, LGW 57 mins
Dartford - LGW 42 mins, SEN 45 mins, STN 46 mins
Romford -STN 37 mins, SEN 40 mins, LGW 58 mins
And Essex:
Basildon - SEN 24 mins, STN 41 mins
Braintree - STN 37 mins, SEN 1hr 6 mins
Chelmsford - SEN 31 mins, STN 33 mins
Colchester - STN 45 mins, SEN 52 mins
Harlow - STN 20 mins, SEN 53 mins
Source: Google Maps
So it is literally the from outside the M25 eastwards and no further north than Chelmsford where SEN is actually the closest option. So I re-iterate my point that SEN covers a much more local catchment area than the other airports.

And that would be because according to my research, LGW is quicker to get to from East Kent by a good 15 / 20 minutes and SEN takes just as long as STN.

Maybe on a direct road travel time comparison. However you save much more than the time difference you quote, getting from the plane, through the terminal and picking up your ride at Gatwick, by using Southend.
As far as south of the river is concerend, unless within the immediate vicinity of south of the river, SEN is always going to be on a loser so best concentrate on north of the river and the A127 link to the M25 then the M11, M10, A1M, M1 etc.

Well said IB4138. You really have to wonder if FRatSTN, Phileas Fogg et al have ever actually experienced the speed of getting through all the formalities at SEN. Plane to train platform at SEN with hand luggage only - as little as 5 or 10 minutes. Done it many times.

As correct as you may be in terms of how quick it is to travel through, the reality is, air passengers typically look at travel times and the feasibility of travel to where they actually want to go. Most tend to not consider the ease of access through an airport to the same degree.
Plus, especially for departing passengers, is it really that much quicker to get through? For instance, check-in would still open 2 hours before, so I wouldn't have thought it would be any quicker to get through in that respect, perhaps less stressful?

Barling - in my book, hitting 1m pax is when an airport goes from still tenuous to being established and able to be taken seriously. Targets by their very nature are arbitrary, but SEN management deserve to be very happy at this point.

A photo of EI-FCY has appeared, the aircraft which had been rumoured to be destined for the rumoured new SEN based operation.
The aircraft appears to not be all white, rather in basic Aer Lingus Regional colours with no titles and no blue stripe...

I fully appreciate the ease of uncongested and well laid out airports but do SEN punters get around the M25 any quicker, do they not need to queue to pay the Dartford toll etc. etc. etc?
So if transitting thru SEN saves, let's say, 15 minutes then that is the only advantage SEN may have and, on the grand scale of things, 15 minutes (or similar) isn't very much.

Cannot we all just move on from this series of exchanges where someone says that 'an extra travel time of 15 minutes to SEN is extremely negative to its prospects' only for someone else to say 'a saving of 15 minutes at the airport itself is not very important as a positive to its prospects'.
It's all a case of 'half full' or 'half empty' depending on your individual viewpoint. Let's look forward instead to discussing the news which will be coming out shortly concerning real happenings at SEN.

EI-FCY Photo
Is that really EI-FCY in the photo?
It's captioned as being ex F-WWED, c/n 1139, but Jethros shows that aircraft as being registered EI-FAZ which is expected to go to Aer Lingus Regional. Maybe that shown is actually EI-FAZ.

I was very surprised on my last trip through SEN to see just how much the new departure lounge has grown by - much bigger than I had expected. It really does change the whole atmosphere of the place (for the better I add!!). The new area could certainly do with a splash of colour though - it does look very grey. Still - early days yet. An airside Wetherspoons would be nice - but I suppose that is just a dream for now!!

Thank Goodness the subject has changed from trains and road tolls.
Stobarts always said that once the new extended terminal was operational, they would make an important announcement concerning their team member airlines. I am not quite sure what that means but presumably airlines have agreed to consider coming to SEN but not until the terminal is finished. Let's hope we will see new airlines and routes appear this summer, although it's getting a bit late to start I would have thought.
