Huge numbers use the Luton Parkway, to the point that a new dedicated rail link to the terminal is to be built. Rail access may well entice more airlines to operate as they can advertise how quick passengers can get to major conurbations.

Several posters have mentioned the airport's recent success in attracting freight operators because of its very long runway. As I see it, this guarantees the airport's future, and means that it does not have to engage in a suicidal fight to rapidly attract passenger flights, especially as they will demand major expenditure on facilities.
If the suggested major housing goes ahead, and if the public vote with their wallets and patronise the airlines that provide services, then it may rapidly get into a virtuous circle of growth. As I have pointed out, the railway from Doncaster passes over the ECML, and I think that, since the line is a major freight route, it will have had the bridges raised so that extending the electrification to Finningley will not be ridiculously expensive WHEN the demand appears, if it does.

Cheers EGPO, maybe you should start a Ireland West Knock Airport thread if there isn't one already :-)
No one's really against a train link to DSA or anywhere else - the comments are more related to the cost / benefits and whether the presser was in any way serious, or just wanting to publicize the airport.
I take the point that in the UK we are lucky to have so many airports close to our major cities, with good access on the whole. Saying that, the difference in population between the west of Ireland and, say, the North of England means that there's a far greater demand.
One thing about DSA is you can't fly to Amsterdam or Dublin for 35 quid like you can from other airports

I've just booked flights for two people to Amsterdam from DSA for £110 return in November.
Timmy how come you've booked tickets from an airport that closed in 2015? You said the airport would be closed by the end of 2015 and suggested we marked your words. What's happened to those accurate sources of yours at the Free Press, Peel, and the handling agents, where are they now?
Just remind us when Wizz Air are changing their Doncaster routes to Leeds?, that was what you told us was happening wasn't it?

Hi Timmy , out of interest sir , did you compare any surrounding airports ?.
How close are you to HUY for example.
I read up on it and was surprised to learn it's owned by your regional government ( Northern Lincolnshire).
As well as Eastern Airways UK.
The Airport does have a very frequent service to AMS by November you'd be flying 'in style' on am EMB175 I think.
But if have thought KLM with it's forward going route network the world is your oyster?.
So why not choose them?.
Maybe your DSA Needs to try bag KLM When the airport in Teesside sadly becomes a branch of supervalue and car park ...

I fly to Dublin and AMS for work. My flight are always booked within a few days of travel.
I've no real complaint about Flybe prices. Off to Dub on Monday, but as usual coming back via MAN and the train as I prefer not to wait for the morning flight back. The Flybe flight was cheaper than the Ryan Air back to Man (not my favourite airline - but the evening Aer Lingus meant that I missed the last direct train).
Oh on KLM. I've looked at this from Humberside a few times to avoid an overnight stay in the Netherlands. The roundtrip usually shows something insane like £450.

Instead of proposing an ECML DSA station, it might be better for the airport to lobby for the HS2 S Yorks parkway station being located conveniently, attracting PAX from Leeds, E Midlands and Brum.

Out of interest does anyone know of 2Excel's intentions?
They recently moved hangars and are still utilizing the two 727's which are for oil spills, however have been advertising for a 737 Training Captain to "deliver training on small fleet of B737-400 aircraft".
Seems an interesting line of work. Would the 737's be utilized for response work and additionally be retrofitted for cargo operations?

"Barnstable" The HS2 route to Leeds in South Yorkshire was announced yesterday. The line is going to run East of Sheffield meaning the proposed station at Meadowhall won't be getting built.
Instead HS2 Trains will call at Sheffield via a spur utlising the exsisting lines.

As much as I'ld like a new Parkway station to be built I just don't think it will happen.
It seems Sheffield and it's neighbours have successfully argued themselves off the main route. It will also provided an approximate £1bn cost saving which I'm sure helped ease the decision. Oh and that's the DUP money sorted l!

Demand for long distance rail travel emanating from South Yorkshire needs to be balanced against demand from other markets further north. The demand generated by Leeds is almost double that of Sheffield. For every 2 passengers projected to alight in the Sheffield City Region, a further 7 are travelling beyond to other destinations served by HS2
The Secretary of State must decide on the strategic balance between serving South Yorkshire’s needs and those of other regions further north and south. With the M18 / Eastern route enabling faster journeys to destinations with high levels of demand and the inclusion of Chesterfield, as well as increasing the overall benefits of the Y shaped network, the Secretary of State continues to judge that the M18 / Eastern route better meets the strategic objectives of HS2 than the Meadowhall route.

Loads of Wizz flights arrive and depart early morning and there's far fewer movements in the afternoon. I can understand the thinking in taking the bus down Bawtry Rd instead of the motorway. That way it will also offer a fast journey time into Sheffield from the Rotherham suburbs.
There will also be a lot more people living and working in the DSA area in the future - I think I read somewhere that Amazon plans to create 1500 jobs at the iPort - so maybe a stop at Rossington / Parrot's Corner is also envisaged. It could also potentially serve the Yorkshire Wildlife Park but that would involve a detour on minor roads.
If the bus left the M18 at J1 and carried on to Sheffield city centre via Wickersley, Bawtry Rd and the Parkway with, say, two stops in Rotherham and a stop at Parrots Corner Park and Ride, I imagine the total journey time would be around 45 minutes.
The existing public transport option - the train from Midland to Donny Interchange followed by a switch to the existing Donny-DSA bus - takes about an hour if timed well.

Cheers, surprised that there is no more info out there yet. They are probably still working out the schedule.
