2020 vision

All things being equal, in projecting to 2020 a wild guess should look something like this..

Both Ryanair and easyjet plan 25 percent + growth corporately

It's reasonable that their BOH operations should grow accordingly.

Ryanair have stated in their plan they want more activity at major airports and in Germany. If APD goes Edinburgh coud come back to BOH and a German destination. Expect more in Poland and probably Italy. Rome would be my expectation.

If RYR are obliged to sell their stake in Aer Lingus, I would expect RYR to reopen BOH-DUB. This is perhaps a 40 percent probability.

Easyjet will probably add one more route, perhaps two. Equivalent to one daily rotation all year round.

KLM to Amsterdam is probably about a 25percent likelihood.

By 2020 given the Gulf carriers will each be near double today's size, I expect Emirates to have another deal like Qantas. The most logical would be with KLM using Amsterdam as a European hub feeding the Far East both direct and via the Gulf. This if it happens will strengthen KLM moves into UK regions.

For Inclusive tour flights I see Thomson sticking with BOH, but perhaps Jet2 Holidays stepping in to sweep up the old Palmair business.

If Flybe survive their current crisis, they should be able to make a strong hub of SOU, especially for the Channel Islands, so no hope there for BOH and most domestic flights. Flybe will inevitably lose any head to head battle on sun routes with RYR and EZY.

As regards Freight and mail, a 5 percent growth per year at BOH is sensible and respectable.

All that means a 2020 pax throughput somewhere between 900k and 1.2m

FF

Just heard from my friends down saff that Bournemouth Air traffic are losing two of their best controllers to Birmingham. Disappointing as the two ladies in question were top notch and knew how to push tin!!

Several scenarios would result in very different numbers but I reckon that BOH should see between 1.3m and 2.2m by 2020 depending on APD changes, leakage to London/Southampton, infrastructure & continuing population growth of Bmth and surrounding area.

Bristol currently processes 6m pax from a catchment of 7.5m. They are forecasting 10m by 2020. BRS sees a further 6.5m people 'leaking' from their catchment to London and other airports.

If we apply a simple catchment size extrapolation to BOH then that would mean BOH should be at about 33% of BRS size. That means right now BOH's catchment could be supplying 1.9m pax through BOH, with potentially 3.3m in the future, 2020. HOWEVER, Southampton and proximity of London does a better job at absorbing 'leakage' from Bmth so my conclusion is that BOH is more likely to be about 25% of BRS size. That still means BOH is well behind where it should be right now.

Was there a rumour going around earlier in the year about the possible start of a summer only flight to the Med being operated by Easy Jet to compliment there winter Geneva route ?

Thomson are playing it safe again next summer with the usual 14 flights to the holiday hot spots but no where new which is a shame , Exeter have managed a big increase in flights with Thomson using various other carriers for additional flights , shame Bournemouth cant do that

Ryanair i am guessing wont start to load there schedule till Oct / Nov ? so will have to wait and see what lies in store for next year

Bournemouth handled 94 , 444 passengers in August exactly the same as August last year !

Good loads on pretty much all the flights with Ryanair at about 90 % loads factors and Thomson with at about 96 % loads

However there were about 18 extra flights with Ryanair to Malaga , Alicante , Faro and Lanzarote which should have pushed the passenger figures a bit more but looking at the massive increase this month with Southampton and the FlyBe routes to PMI , ALC , FAO and AGP i would guess they took away a lot of potential business ?

Dublin saw 2236 passengers on the route with an average of about 41 passengers using the ATR 42 ( noticed Sept has seen much more use of the larger ATR 72 )

Thomson have suspended flights this winter to Sharm but have replaced them with an extra flights each Thursday to Lanzarote

Ryanair have suspended the 2 flights a week this winter to Gerona the other 5 remaining routes are still showing bookable

That's what they say but sadly too many of them found Ryanair's prices more appealing.

Palmair day trips

I knew many passengers who used to take advantage of the day trips through the summer months, not only as a quick break but some to take a look at a country/city for a possible future holiday destination.
Sadly that option seems to be gone as we know it, with only few choice destinations now available.
It would be nice to see someone take the plunge again and do a few day trips,or even "overnighters" to some of the far off major cities, I'm sure they would be booked to capacity.

Newmarket Air Holidays still provides several trips catering for the former Palmair customer base.

They feature a total of 13 charter flights out of B'mouth throughout next summer:

11th May to Verona
19th May to Dubrovnik
24th May to Naples
26th May to Porto
1st June to Verona
7th June to Naples
15th June to Verona
13th September to Palermo
14th September to Verona
20th September to Naples
22nd September to Dubrovnik
28th September to Verona
29th September to Porto

Also, they are selling two winter day-trip departures

07th December to Pajala, Sweden
11th December to Cologne

Hopefully they will boost their programme for the next few years as these seem to prove successful.

It's a pity to see that Lake Garda flights dropped to few departures in the last couple of years, compared to at least two weekly flights which were operated on behalf of Palmair and Italian Getaways.
On the other hand, Flybe's Southampton-Verona has been introduced as regular scheduled charter flight which operates season long and mostly carries Inghams customers holidaying in Italy.

Palmair

Haven't all their passengers died off or in the process of doing so? Like the local butchers it was just a matter of time and no unless you have a DeLorean you will not be seeing them again.

Newmarket Holidays are Bournemouth s biggest selling regional UK airport after London

There are actually 5 departures to Verona next summer but they are using the larger A320 Small Planet aircraft so hence i would imagine the 1 less departure than this year , plus the 2 flights from Southampton a week to compete with

What would be good to see is Thomson operating to a few more places now shame they have dropped Tunisia and replaced it again with another Palma flight

Shame Olympic Holidays cant re introduce Crete

Keyvon: I wish I was wrong, they were a respectable operation. FR played their part too lets not forget. Its all about low cost at all cost to a customer nowadays.

Keyvon. River Joint says it how he sees it..we dont always agree with him on the BOH thread..diplomacy and tact are not part of his armoury..but the demise of Palmair summing up was, put in a blunt style, pretty correct. Was saying 10 years before their demise they should be changing their model..but they kept offering the same old product..good as it was..appealing to an ever ageing client base, many of whom discovered cruising as the preferred holiday option. FR came in and took the budget end, Thomson the middle ground and Palmairs customer base either passed away or was not there in sufficient numbers to make pay. They have/had ( Bath travel carries on) a very staid and conservative image which appeals to some in the area..but was never going to succeed in the post 2008 recession..

I think Flitefones summing up of BOH in 2020 is the most realistic posting on here for a long time..and pretty much is how i would call it

Robthestudent- shame on you. Bournemouth have experienced a significant turnover in staff in recent years. I do not think the two going to Birmingham are any better than the other that gave notice three months ago or the others that left last year and the year before. I do concede they are the only ladies to have moved on lately, maybe that was your motivation

I notice that a one-way bus ticket from Bournemouth train station to the Bournemouth airport costs £5, with the bus operator being a licenced concession from MAG. £5 seems a lot for a 12 minute bus ride.

Anyone know how much money per passenger is being paid by the bus operator to the airport for the privilege of carrying customers ?
