Flybe and Aer Arann ATR72s
Can anyone tell me the reason for the leases of Aer Arann ATRs recently? And G-ECOD was stored at Downsview (the Gash 8 factory) for six weeks or so following delivery - is it crew training, crew shortage, or something else?
Just curious.

I'm not sure of the delayed deliverence of GECOD, but i do know that due to delayed deliverence of Dash8 that the planned capacity increase for CWL flights is put off for another 2 weeks or so.
According to Jethro's website the Aer Aerann leases are until end of October. I hope they don't plan keeping it on the BE1431/BE1432 until that date as CDG can't grasp the concept of and ATR operating on a lease for BE and is causing major probs at Cardiff regarding the transits.

Wet lease ATRs are being paid for by Bombardier to cover the shortfall in capacity due to the delays in supplying the backlog of Q400 orders. Not entirely sure what the latest excuses are from the Canadians, but it isn't staffing/training issues in Flybe.
Flybe and Aer Arann
Heard that OD amd OE will go to SAS/Wideroe together with OB and OC. What's holding up the ex-SAS machines then? I'm told they are all painted and ready to rock, unless mods or certification required?

Whens the announcement regarding GLA/EDI - LGW services AND certain EDI - LCY flights during the day...
Can only be for the better for everyone involved... BA are making a right pigs-ear out of the Cityflyer op and LGW is hardly ever even half full...
Come on flybe. Get in there and sort it out.

LH Strike
Flybe brings in larger aircraft to help travellers beat Lufthansa cancellations.
25 July 2008
Flybe, Europe’s biggest regional airline has responded to the upcoming strike by Lufthansa staff by increasing capacity on a number of crucial UK-German routes.
Monday 28th July marks the start of lengthy industrial action by Lufthansa’s Ground and Cabin Crew. With the prospect of at least a fortnight’s total shutdown, Flybe is bringing in larger aircraft on German routes from Birmingham, Southampton and Manchester.
Commenting on the move, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer said:
“Flybe is stepping in with extra capacity to make sure travellers don’t get caught up in the Lufthansa strike. With our great value fares and user-friendly timetable between the UK and Germany, no-one need miss out on that important trip, whether it’s business or leisure. Flybe tickets prices to Germany start at £34.99 one way including taxes”.
Flybe’s routes to Germany from the UK are:
• Dusseldorf to: Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton.
• Frankfurt to: Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton.
• Hannover to: Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton.
• Hamburg to: Birmingham.
• Stuttgart to: Birmingham.

Flybe hedge most of their fuel, so sudden rises (or drops) don't make that much difference. The fare rise was always likely as the lead in fare is a loss-leader. The difference is in fact mostly due to fuel and rising other costs, nothing more. The fares are set to try to fill the planes, not cream the passengers.
BTW, the SAS planes are not old wrecks, but quite modern examples. The oldest ones went back, the newest stayed and the middle ones we have for a while. Damn good business I reckon. Well done Uncle Jim again!

Obviously the extent to which this occurs depends greatly on which route you're talking about (sector length, airport charges etc) and the type of passengers that use it. Business routes will generally have higher fares, operate with more empty seats, yet make decent money.
I do realise it is far more complex than this, but the sole purpose of an airline is not simply to put as many bums on seats as you can, but to make as much money as possible.
