politicians in banana republics always use "Nationalism" as a cover-up for corruption
Across the history the nationalism has been used as a cover-up for... almost everything. Every war was motivated by "patriotic" reasons, understood as just an other, more "subtle" form of the same well-known nationalism. That's why the EU actually does have its sense, as something that at least in theory tries to make some achievements above the nationalisms. If only there was less bureaucracy in it...

I hope this isn't the sort of strike your suppliers go on when you don't pay your bills.

Alitalia

BBC World has just reported Breaking News that the rescue consortium has fully withdrawn its offer to save Alitalia. Terrible news.

If true and Alitalia do go completely out of business (which I doubt, the italian government won't allow it) then about time. Not bad news at all, talk about cutting off your nose despite your face!! I don't get the union's thinking, they will not make concessions to their extravegent working practices, apparently preferring the airline to go bust and therefore lose everything. BIZARRE

Quite frankly I have very little sympathy for them. The unions had their chance to save the company. The wanted a solution that suited only them, and now they have nothing. It is not as though there weren't people interested in buying them.

Now there are no jobs for anybody!!!! There are times in life where you have to concede defeat....they didn't.....now they have nothing

Rescue scuppered by Pilot and FA unions. Liquidation means no redundancy packages (which had been offered under the rescue proposals).

Union shop stewards, you've gotta love em!!

Has anyone heard (or seen) the fat lady singing yet?
I think we should be told . . .

Furthermore, is Paddy Power paying out?

For the last 2 decades at least this airline has been in its own death throes. Now, it really is breathing its last few gasps of air. Finally, and not before time too.
Goodbye Alitalia. You were a dinosaur and a relic. You WILL NOT be missed by anyone.

Thanks Flipping Madly, "throws" corrected to "throes". I shall now go and self flagellate with a couple of rattan canes and a damp edition of "The Log"!

Edited for spelling correction.

It's "cutting off your nose to spite your face" not despite your face

and "death throes" not throws.

Don't thank me I do this as a service.

Good news indeed.

Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas. Looks like Christmas has come early.

No sympathy for them whatsoever.

Flapping Madly

Be careful, you'll get flamed for suggesting that posts are actually spelled right and are grammatically correct. Welcome to the spelling and grammar police.

Pity about Alitalia though, Trieste is good kick-off point for Istria but, if the unions want to commit suicide.....

And I am a strong trade unionist.
