I Think it is important that the companies that can not carry their own costs go out of business. Unfortunately I think that a lot of the old "elephants" will have a hard time in the future. I think that the unions are partly to blame. Less work! More Pay. U can only stretch it to the limit then it is over. I feel for all the employees in the Flag carriers (and everybody else as well that are working as highly professional workers in companies all over the globe), but now it is time to realise that the times has changed. We all have to realise that the pilot job is not what it has been. The companies want to refer to us as busdrivers. We all now the difference between a bus and an a/c. But for now I think we have to accept that we work to live and not the other way around. There is a time to plant the seed and there is a time for harvest. Now is the time to plant. Enjoy your time with the family and when you go flying you do your highly professional job. All the best for the future.

I wonder when they had a chance of being bought out by Air France/KLM if those unions had any common sense. Alitalia was bankrupt a long time ago. They didn't agree with the restructuration program Air France/KLM insisted for the deal to go through. They (those unions) were stupid enough to think that they were going to be saved again and again by uncle Silvio trying to save a few jobs. I guess their mind set is not of this time or as I say a serious lack of business and common sense. NOW EVERYONE IS OUT OF A JOB!!.WELL DONE UNIONS!!! Come up with the money and save your old mans club yourself! Don't take me wrong I don't like to see any airline to go bust because it is not good for anyone and it just floods the pilots market. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED!!

These governments have no business sense either. They continue to think they can continue stealing from the tax payer and have never heard of the word efficiency, especially those crooks in Brussels. The reflection we will see in the collapse of the euro soon. They have never heard of giving any tax cuts in difficult times to keeping the economy going. Instead they raise taxes where they can to keep a bunch like AZ flying for their own comfort to use as a private airline on the expense of the taxpayer who gets ripped of again by these corrupt european rip-off institutions (EU and national governments) Just look at the USA across the pond at least they lowered taxes and interest rates!!

FL XXX, don't hold your breath yet, actually right now chances are that there will be an agreement with unions (pilots in first place), because CAI will someway allocate an extra 100 M, beside the PM has spoken to the head of energy entity owned by the state (ENI) and they might furnish fuel for the time being necessary (days ?)
Believe it or not the bankruptcy commissary has the power to make some contract debt for absolute necessity, on the basis that these would become the absolute first to be paid back in case of dismissal, be reassured he will use this faculty if even is the last trick to "save alitalia".

Italians don't need Alitalia, other carriers can give them a better service at lower cost.
I feel pity for AZ staff, but for the sake of the European aviation, it's time to dim the lights, right now.

For the sake of all those people's jobs I hope you're right!! As long as the taxpayer doesn't have to dig in his pocket again to fund the mafia. I am sorry but I have lost respect for these nasty tricks of our european and national governments. God bless Ryanair at least they have the courage to stand up against these criminals with their rip-off taxes!!

Well said!! Alitalia can stay as far as I'm concerned as long as there is a serious clean sweep of this old man's club. Just look at the operation of any serious low cost carrier and strip out all the bull****, otherwise it's better to go bust and start up something new that's efficient and no more bureaucracy and people that make up silly things to make themselves more important than they really are.

The whole AZ deal is once again a political issue that has nothing to do with free trade nor any kind of sane concept of business.
It was part of the political campaign of the actual prime minister to present the AZ issue as a matter of national interest from an economical perspective and of pride from a nationalistic view point.
Now the pivotal point seems to be the acceptance of the new T&C's by the pilot unions but what should be focal is the absolute lack of a meaningful businessplan: no hub,no real long haul plans,no international partnership,no cargo,risk of anti-monopoly actions by competitors on lucrative routes like Milan/Rome and so on.
Very short sighted plans for the airline......wise move for the Prime minister though.

Two days ago I tried to send a mail with some link from many european pilots unions but, thanks to the moderators, it has never appeared in this forum.
I try again with this.
It is only what france, portuegese, german trade unions thinks about Alitalia affairs.

daz211 a reasonable "very last hour" deadline could be the late hours of monday. In the meanwhile as I mentioned before they could come up with some creative solution for fuel, helped by cancellation of some flight.
Remember the political reputation of a very "influential" PM is at stake here. The industrial subjects have all to gain "in perspective" by stretching a little their concessions to workforce.

The amministrator of Alitalia said that there will be no more fuel for Az planes just because wants to push pilot associations to accept the unique contract...... but anyway we will see...... it is like south american telenovelas or, simply italian manfrina (is anybody knows the meaning of "manfrina"?)..... like to be in a puppets theatre.

kevincoy, it's a bit more complicated than that. The first step of bankruptcy has been filed already, meaning replacement of company's board by a gov. appointed commissioner. His task is to find a buyer with a suitable business plan to continue operations, or proceed to an orderly shutdown, assets sale, and allocation of payments to creditors.
Anyway I don't expect dramatic news today as rumors are that an agreement can be reached 'soon', and at this point one more day will not make a difference.
