CWL-ABZ (via NCL)

Cardiff gains new link to ABZ!

Eastern Airways to introduce new Cardiff - Aberdeen link - Eastern Airways

Good news; and technically a new route for CWL as selected services operate ABZ-CWL via NCL & CWL-ABZ via NCL (sold as 1-stop) with NO aircraft change required. Additionally, as of 03Jan the a.m. CWL-NCL-CWL service will op on the SZ Bombardier Q300 with a change of dep/arr times all round.

CWL -ABZ

Looking at the flights, the only non-aircraft change flight will be the ABZ-CWL via NCL. From CWL-ABZ you will have to change aircraft to a connecting flight (except on Sundays)

CWL to NCL will be twice daily Mo-Fri and once on Sun - the weekday morning flights operated by Air Southwest Dash 8's and the evening flights operated by Eastern Jetstreams. On Sunday an Eastern Saab stops over at NCL the way to ABZ

NCL to CWL will be twice daily Mo-Fri and once Sun - the weekday morning flights operated by Air Southwest Dash 8's and the evening flights operated by Eastern Jetstreams having come from ABZ and using NCL as a stop over. Sunday an Eastern Saab stops over from ABZ on the way to CWL.

CWL to ABZ will be once daily Mo-Fri and Sun - it is only available on weekdays by getting two flights (sold together on Easterns website) - Air Southwest to NCL and then one of a number of Easterns NCL-ABZ flights. On Sunday the flight is operated by a Eastern Saab 2000 and has a stopover in NCL.

ABZ to CWL will be once daily Mo-Fri and Sun - there is only one option available which is an afternoon Eastern Jetstream (or Saab on Sundays) via NCL (thus no AC change). The AC then turns round at CWL and is used to return to NCL only (or back to ABZ via NCL on Sunday)

So in terms of aircraft movements at CWL -
Weekday mornings - Air Southwest Dash 8 in from NQY, out to NCL and in from NCL, out to NQY.
Weekday afternoons - Eastern Jetstream 41 in from ABZ (via NCL) and out to NCL.
Sunday afternoons - Eastern Saab in from ABZ (via NCL) and out to ABZ (via NCL)

Looks like the new CWL-NQY service has been brought forward to 04 January to coincide with the Q300 being introduced on the CWL-NCL a.m service (and their new ABZ link), hence the NQY-CWL-NCL-CWL-NQY rotation...although, having said that, tickets are for sale but theres no official timetable on the website.

There has also been no official announcements to the launch of NQY-CWL either so it may be launched officially in the next week or two.

Cardiff has become emergency central over the last few days but i believe every occasion it has been a job well done especially today with the MON.

Good to see Monarch chose Cardiff to divert to over others - must be the excellent ground handling recieved in the past

I don't think he chose CWL as a matter of choice, after all if the pilots backside is going half acrown - sixpence he will put his sick aircraft down asap no matter where he was. geography dictated where he landed, not emotion.

UNLESS THEY HAVE AN X FACTOR POSITION TABLE OF THE TOP TEN BEST PLACES TO DIVERT IN THE EVENT OF POSSIBILITY OF MEETING THEIR MAKER.

The replay on Casper shows that it got to about 26400 ft just over the sea
abeam Cardiff when it started to descend but it disappeared of the screen about a minute or two later. There was little levelling off.

Casper - live aircraft tracking

If you reply to about 7.44 you can follow it for a couple of minutes.

The delayed inbound is just over the Channel returning as a 321.

BMI Baby BFS - Cardiff diverted into BHX about one hour ago, I assume
due weather although not the greatest night up here either.

In this instance i imagine that it was a case of get down as soon as possible. As it seems they just started to fly over the river severn when they dedected the issue i imagine it was either Cardiff or Bristol.

Runway 30 was active at CWL therefore it may have looked a better option and longer runway could have also played a part.

But the way in which it was handled and the comments not only from the airline but by the passengers themselves was a testiment to a job well done.

This will fill airlines with confidence that they can rely on non base stations such as CWL in the future for Diversions.

Cardiff to Cork Service

After a discussion on another forum i thought i would ask the thoughts of the members of pprune.

Who is going to step in an pick up the Cardiff to Cork service?

There are two airlines in my opinion that could step in.

Bmibaby could operate 1 x Daily Cardiff - Cork which would be an ideal short sectored route and mean a 3rd aircraft base is more likely.

Manx2.com could also a more business friendly 3 x Daily service to Cork. With the size of the Manx2.com aircraft there shouldn't be a reason why Manx2.com can't operate a shuttle service back and forth ORK with 4 - 5 flights a day. This would mean that a aircraft would either need to be based at Cardiff or Cork.

I don't believe Flybe could provide the service until it has a base at either Cardiff. The reason being is that for some reason Flybe doesn't have any flights operating into Cork from any of it's bases.

CWL-ORK

Below is the summer timetable of the routes from mainland UK to Cork.

LHR - EI - 4 x Daily A320

LGW - EI - 2 x Daily A320
LGW - FR - 1 x Daily B738

STN - FR - 2 x Daily B738

MAN - EI - 1 x Daily A320
MAN - WW - 3 Weekly B733

BHX - EI - 1 x Daily A320

EDI - EI - 2 x Daily AT72

GLA - EI - 1 x Daily AT72

BRS - EI - 1 x Daily AT72

NCL - LS - 2 x Weekly B733

LPL - FR - 1 x Daily B738

CWL - EI - 1 x Daily AT72

NQY/PLH - SZ - 4 x Weekly DH8

EI Regional pulled out of the CWL to ORK route on a 1 x Daily AT72 route in the summer so why would WW come in flying daily with an aircraft with nearly double the capacity if EI couldn't make it work?
Also Manx isn't going to run a "shuttle" when the only airports with multiple daily flights to ORK are from London, Manchester and Edinburgh even if it is with a smaller aircraft?

The reason the route was cut was due to fleet shortages not due to LF. The LF for this route were quite good. If a 2 daily routine was put in place it would no longer just rely on leisure passengers like the EI CWL-ORK was. NM would be ideal for this route.
