although not a pilot, Fort Lauderdale has a 9000ft runway; Montego Bay has a 8700ft runway and we operate a B777 from there with a full passenger load.
So I presume FLL could handle a fully loaded B777.
However I would love to see what you are proposing happen.

Surely it was only a few years ago that the "long haul" configured 767s were comprehensively rebuilt, in the "Dusk" programme, with new interiors, while the short haul fleet (which does places like Moscow and Larnaca, not so short) were left untouched, and have since degenerated further into an ever shabbier state.
So can it be that the long hauls are going to be made over for a second time, while the short-hauls, with their forever-broken seats and IFE remain untouched ? Surely not.

BA have launched a number of new routes recently (HND, SAN, GOT, ORY, EZE [Direct]), are there any plans to announce further new routes or the transfer of routes between LHR/LGW, as like MRU or vice versa?
There have been rumours for a number of months that the following are likely to be re-introduced or launched, due to decreased operating costs or indeed a greater demand for service:

Do IAG plan to take greater advantage of the LHR-MAD route in terms of slots?
MAD is pretty much open and can take aircraft at any time of day but LHR, as mentioned above, is very slot constrained.
Would IAG look to reducing the MAD frequency and introducing larger aircraft on the busier flights for connections from both ends? Basically by using 767s on the MAD route in the mornings so PAX can connect to MAD for South America or LHR for North America. And obviously at other times of the day for other regions.
It would then allow BA to open up more routes from LHR. I know it's all about frequency but there is going to come a time where the A320/B737 series aircraft are just simply too small for LHR, especially on trunk routes like LHR-MAD which it is likely to become.
Just a thought!

According to a post on a.net detailing all of the changes the long-haul aircraft being refurbished will get a complete interior overhaul (new overhead bins, seats, IFE etc)
Regarding LHR-MAD, I don't think we'll see a reduction in frequencies on this route, but I expect larger aircraft will be deployed for higher transfer traffic volumes.

Bermuda is not moving to LHR and there is no demand for it out of LHR. Pax from Bermuda have mentioned many a time to BA that they really enjoy this service from LGW and would like to see it stay at LGW and not "disappear" round the M23!

There's a good product and a great team at Gatwick, always in the shadow of Heathrow, but the idea is that to grow the company overall, they can move some routes to Gatwick where BA have dramtically scaled back. The BA Hub concept was closed and now the BA operation is essentially point to point. The "beach fleet" routes mainly aimed at a UK market and so whilst there is feed from GLA/EDI/MAN, they are not so reliant on connecting traffic. Hence if you can maintain these sort of routes succesfully at Gatters and build on them, you get some space to grow Heathrow for routes that need connectivity. Hence why LUX is moving to Heathrow, it's a business destination better suited to the LHR route structure, LGW has mainly leisure.
Last time every heavy route that moved LHR->LGW left the too much of the exisiting connecting traffic flying with the competition back in the Hounslow area....

When BA operated quite a few long haul routes from LGW, which of these actually made a profit ? I know that BA are increasing the frequency of a few of the Caribbean routes but are we likely to see more long haul destinations (that make a profit) from LGW in the future?

Not sure about the reduction in frequency (LHR-MAD) but seems that BA are introducing larger aircraft to the route.
Have just booked at ba.com to go to MAD on 30 March on BA0458 - now on a 767.
Would seem that BA0462 ex LHR is also a 767 - with BA0455/459 ex MAD being the return segments.

I have just noticed on the Gatwick Airport site that a 3 times weekly BA service to Male has been entered departing Wed Fri Sun at 1815 non-stop flights on Boeing 777. Starts Winter timetable I believe. I guess that this may mean another 777 at Gatwick to provide these flights and the ones to Mauritius. Sharm el-Sheikh still there too. I guess as some other carriers have cancelled their flights BA may pick some of the displaced passengers in the coming months. Apologies if this new service has been mentioned before.
