Good news for me about Flybe flying to Aberdeen. I regularly travel to Aberdeen to visit family, but have never been able to afford Eastern prices, Have booked today for my wife and I to fly with Flybe for £97.96 return for the two of us. Eastern quoted £299.60 for the same dates.

Whilst its great news for FLYBE does anyone have a clue what this means for Jet2. Will this require a re-jig of the timetable from Newcastle, afterall the LGW run did take up a considerable chunk of the 737s day.

Newcastle-London Gatwick Route - Jet2.com are flying this route up to and including 29th March 2008. For flights from 30th March onwards please refer to flybe.com.
What appears at the top of the page when searching NCL-LGW on the LS timetable. Surprised that the airline showing BE will be operating the flight!

I guess this is because Jet2 have been selling tickets for beyond 30 March originally and FlyBe have already said that they will honour Jet2 tickets from then onwards. Good to see some competition on the ABZ route too for the leisure travellers...hope it works. Now, when can we expect a few "W legs" into MME?

No word on a crew base for NCL - all options still under discussion allegedly. As for the jobs, most likely very few direct jobs at the airport, and the majority will be from the secondary effects of any extra income generated from the flights and handling (2 extra part-time jobs at Greggs etc etc ).

From Jet2 management during a brief to staff:

'The 737 will now operate some of the 757 routes, for example, to MJV and AGP during the week, which will free up the 757 to operate more charters, including the once a week (Wed pm) slot to Rhodes'.

PS.

New York to commence from Nov 08 on a charter basis, from 3 Jet2 bases.

757speedbreaks, ive already seen the flying programme for summer and upto now the 737 is operating most of the AGP, MJV anyway, its mainly the PMI and weekend MJVs that are opd by 757, oh and our lovely new wed RHO lol

I heard we are not getting anything else, the 737 that was to operate the LGWs will now be a stanby aircraft for the company, so NCL crew and the remaing 737 will now be rescue a/c for any other base.

Good news on the NYC front, i heard there was 3 long haul destinations that will be flying by summer nxt year

First: Jet2 WILL NOT be cancelleing the LGW - FINAL!!!!!

- remember that comment? about 1 week ago.

If your knowledge of Jet2's planned operations fails to stretch to a week in advance, how come you know so much about what might happen 6 months down the line?

Heathrow

Did anyone read The Times yesterday?

Talking about Heathrow fee's changing which will impact smaller/local routes such as Durham & Newcastle, allowing more new long haul routes from Heathrow.

Does anyone really think this will have an impact on NCL or it just c**p from the press?

I think this has been discussed before - but I cannot honestly see BA giving up the NCL-LHR service. Yes, it may not be the most profitable route in the world but it does generate money in other ways by feeding long haul flights with connecting pax. If these pax did not transit through LHR, then BA would effectively loose out on a considerable number of pax to AF, KL and EK?!

FLYBE

It is very interesting to see developments atlast from BE at NCL. I do however, have a couple of questions:

Will the aircraft be NCL based with based crew or are the 100 jobs just related to the increase in flights (swissport etc requiring more staff?)?

This new lounge of BE's - where on earth are they going to squeeze that in the terminal?

On a route such as ABZ, why only 1 daily service midday? Surely this route, more heavily utilised by riggers and business pax would suit 2 daily, am and pm? Or is this part of a long term plan for BE to compete with T3?

Eastern fighting back??

I received the following email from Eastern today:

Thursday 31 January 2008

NORTH EAST TRAVELLERS BENEFIT FROM EXPANSION OF SERVICES

UK regional airline, Eastern Airways will provide north east business travellers with even greater choice of services and extra capacity as it significantly develops four city routes from Newcastle International Airport.

Increasing services to Aberdeen, Southampton, Cardiff and Stavanger in Norway is all part of Eastern Airways’ expansion plans at Newcastle where it has operated a comprehensive schedule to UK destinations since 2003 and is also the North East’s most punctual scheduled airline*.

From 3 March 2008, Eastern Airways will increase weekday services from 5 to 6 flights a day to Aberdeen, from 3 to 4 a day to Southampton and from 1 to 2 a day to Stavanger to meet demand. The Newcastle to Cardiff service will also increase from 2 to 3 flights each weekday from 7 April 2008.

The introduction of a larger 50 seat Saab 2000 aircraft will also increase seat capacity by 60% between Newcastle and Aberdeen and 55% between Newcastle and Southampton with the airline also offering good value day return options.

Aberdeen has strong connections with the north east as it is Europe’s energy capital with the buoyant offshore oil industry, while Norway is the third largest exporter of oil in the world with most energy companies located in Stavanger.

Southampton is steeped in maritime history with a world class port for cruise liners and has key business links with the north east, particularly in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, finance, insurance, automotive, manufacturing and construction industries. Cardiff is one of the UK’s fastest growing cities with a variety of industry sectors.

Chris Holliday, Eastern Airways’ chief operating officer, said: “We’ve provided the business community with a comprehensive network of routes from Newcastle for many years and this latest expansion demonstrates our commitment to providing the best business schedules from the north east. Our high frequency services offer north east business travellers great flexibility to help them maximise their day visits. As well as further enhancing services, we will also introduce larger Saab aircraft on flights from Newcastle to Aberdeen and Southampton to meet demand.”

“We’re delighted to hear of Eastern Airways’ significant expansion at Newcastle,” said Dave Laws, Newcastle International Airport’s chief executive. “This will greatly increase flexibility and choice of departure on all four routes and should stimulate extra passenger demand.”

Stacy Hall, Director of Communications and Tourism for One NorthEast, said: “It is fantastic to see Eastern Airways demonstrating their confidence in the region with the launch of these new flights. Connectivity is a crucial element in stimulating business growth, improving our ability to attract investment and raising our profile nationally and internationally, which is why we work closely with the region’s airports in making the case for investment in the North East.”

Passengers flying with Eastern Airways from Newcastle also benefit from a dedicated fast track security channel to avoid any queues at the search area.

Eastern Airways also flies from Newcastle to Birmingham and the Isle of Man.

Eastern must be really panicking now. Just done a random search for midweek return to ABZ in April and guess what? Prices have dropped right down to £119 rtn on many flights. Before Flybe announcing ABZ route you would rarely see anything under £200 from Eastern.

Going Loco:

Fair point well made but my other predictions / rumors WERE correct.

(I thank you )

I was assured by someone, high up 'in der management' that the LGW's would not be going - I didn't know they were lying!! (They had to keep it quiet until it was official)

However, the New York and Rhodes flights have been officially announced to staff as opposed to just rumors. I shall now 'keep quite' about any info I hear and you'll all just have to wait until its official!!

Flybe to set up at Newcastle Airport

From the Newcastle Journal : Jan 31 2008

"A HUGE airline investment is set to create more than 1,000 jobs as Europe’s largest regional carrier takes up base at Newcastle Airport. Flybe has saved Newcastle’s route to London Gatwick after buying landing slots.

Mike Rutter - Flybe said “The establishment of a base at Newcastle will itself create 125 jobs and when we hit our passenger target of one million in the next two years, that will support 1,000 jobs. It will mean the creation of highly skilled jobs like pilots, cabin crew and engineering staff. And then there will be knock-on jobs in support services, ground handling and so on.”

Flybe will also be offering direct flights to Aberdeen six days a week and a weekly summer service to Rennes in France. And it is also adding a number of services to cities on the continent including Stuttgart and Frankfurt in Germany, and destinations across Scandinavia due to be announced in the next 18 months.

Mr Rutter said: “I believe the Northumberland coast was one of the top places to visit in the Lonely Planet handbooks. And this new development opens up a new tourist market with people wanting to visit from Germany and France, and our airline has the quality to provide a service to attract these people."

Flybe will also be bringing in three to four new £29m aircraft to support the new investment, costing a combined total of up to £116m.

Eastern have the frequency advantage, and they can offer day returns in both directions on NCL-ABZ. The business passengers will stay with Eastern because of this. Flybe's schedule is pretty useless for business pax

Has anyone seen anything or heard anything by way of elaboration on the Frankfurt link, that would be a significant development and open up a whole host of new routing options.

as for jet 2 making a JFK link ive heard it from a number of people in the right places, upgrading some 757's with a upgradead seating area, good luck too them i hope their previous tech problems from last year dont get in the way

Does any one know of OHY's time table for this year, and if there is plans for the AB4 and AB6's too visit NCL again
