bmibaby are treading the fine balance between being a low-cost airline and just plain cheap. The problem is many people still want to think of the company as bmi, so the service they're receiving is well below par - that's simply the fault of poor marketing signals being sent out by the company. Add that the last month we've been plagued by tech problems and late aircraft delivery, the constant ways the airline manages to find ways to gouge that last penny out of the customers and an unimaginative route network with no major competitive advantages - it's not hard to see why bmibaby are losing a lot of ground to Ryanair at EMA.

I still think that by serving primary airports, having assigned seats and a generally more selective recruitment programme adds to a much nicer ambience at bmibaby - but it won't be enough to keep Ryanair from circling like the buzzard that they are.

This isn't a thread about bmibaby vs Ryanair, it's about East Midlands Airport, but as a long time greying bmibaby-er, then I thought I might as well add my opinion. We don't have to look so far back in the airport's history when BM dominated the airport - DC-9s, Fokkers, Saabs etc all in the distinctive blue livery. The airline was renowned for providing extremely high standards of service and always had a loyal customer base. Then 9/11 happened and people were no longer interested in service it all came down to price. With Go's arrival at EMA, bmi's best way to respond was to use excess 737 capacity to create a low-cost airline. I honestly don't think that bmibaby was ever intended to get to the size it has become today, instead it was supposed to be a sidebar for bmi to learn about how to become low-cost and reduce T&Cs at mainline, which of course has happened at LHR coupled with explosive growth of baby. Although our fares aren't as low as Ryanair's, and to be fair who has, the service we provide still aims to be top quality if low-cost. Tiny will always be here now, there are plenty of ex-BM people who long for better service, better treatment and the absence of stag parties on PRGs - but baby is simply too important a part of the group's strategy to go away any time soon. bmibaby didn't make a profit last year because of a proposed pilot's strike and the closure of the unprofitable MME base, they did however carry 40% of bmi's pax and have taken on more market share. baby will have to be more competitive if they are to compete with Ryanair once FR further dominate the airport, but only the heads at Tiny Town will be able to tell you what's next.

There's much mumbling that this winter bmi regional may add a second ERJ at EMA and next summer we'll have the sixth baby aircraft, but that's just mumbling.

Thank you bmibaby for your input, it's always nice to hear from someone who works for the airline. One thing I would point out is Ryanair is starting to fly to big airports, ie ALC and PMI from both STN and LVP, make you wonder will EMA be next like for other routes have been in the past like AHO.

Out of interest I wonder who will be the first airline from EMA to start flying to the new lot of Eastern European Countries? I would of thought Ryanair would of jumped at the chance by now at least from STN.

Does anyone know if the books are going well for Sterling? I think Riga and Budapest will do well, im thinking of going to Riga myself for a few days.

580 people contacted the Airport in 2006/07, generating a total of 7,978 complaints

60% (4810) of these complaints were from 5 people. What do these people do all day??????

Well it aint my place to say about the new a/c situation at EMA. One thing I would point out is, the two new winter 2007 routes (Riga and Budapest) came out weeks ago. Ryanair will massively expand at EMA it's just when, 27 a/c over the next 12 months, some of these will come to EMA but I dont know for 100% when or how many.

I think you may get a new route or two from other bases, like HHN. Germany seems popular from EMA, both Ryanair and Sleazyjet both do well.

Further more I dont think ramp space will be an issue this winter with new a/c.

new aircraft

Ryanair sell their aircraft after a few years. They may have 27 new ones coming but will sell up to 20 this year. They have 5 sold and 15 under MOU. It is likely they will reduce by 1 or 2 the planes at stansted which has just hiked charges by 100%. EMA is taking some pax from stansted which is showing a decline in Eu traffic.

What is the charge at STN and EMA? And would people rather drive the extra distance than pay a little extra?
ie fly to grx than agp from ema? with Ryanairs average fair being some £15 chaper than EZY and god knows how much cheaper than WW

People in the midlands were driving to stansted as the choice of destinations was very limited at EMA. The extra options at east midlands is reducing that flow. I do not expect people to drive from the south east.

Ryanair do their fare comparisions in euros. They also load a lot more hidden charges on than easyjet. If you have bags to take the difference is very little and easyjet is a far nicer carrier. The average fare is also not a good comaprision as Ryanair bring the average down by dumping unsellable seats onto the market for very early morning mid-week flights to some minor airstrip. This cons the shareholders that they are growing fast. If you wish to go to rome on a friday at a good time you will often pay more with ryanair than BA or anyone else.

Summer 2008

Does anyone have any info on how next summer will shape up with the TOM/FCA and MYT/TCX mergers?

FCA have been developing some great longhaul destinations from EMA recently, and its longhaul product is very popular. At the same time TOM seem to have added their longhaul flights from DSA. So where will the new merged airline base push?

What is have the 4 airlines got based at EMA this summer season, and how could it look next summer?

EMA is my nearest airport. When going somewhere I don't even bother pricing flights out of STN, no real good public transport options and drive is too much hassle. Will look at BHX, MAN first and even LTN. LPL is getting attractive now with the new FR base there, got some good deals and a reasonable straightforward trip there. It would take a very good reason to get me to go to STN, I'd take the train to LGW first.

While I'm here, EMA needs to get security sorted. Starting to get ridiculous at peak times, on occasion it takes longer for me to get through security that get to the airport. If all these welcome expansions are coming along then they need to sort that out. Quiet times are extremely good, but needs resourcing for all periods.

jamaica flt went full but late (not sure what time)

with regards to the item on the local news tonight about all the moaning minnies who live in diseworth/c.don etc....

if you don't like living near an airport, then MOVE!!!!!!

if it bothers them that much that they make up 60% of ema's complaints then that's just sad... they could have bought a lovely house in a quiet cul de sac with all the postage money saved!!!! ha ha!!

i would absolutely LOVE to live on Hill top (specially that purple house!!), I can't think of anything better, not having to make a 50 mile round trip to planespot!!

and before u start moaning bout planespotters, i work as cabin crew at ema so i'm entitled to love my job and therefore love planes!!!

You should live in one of the three houses up Diseworth lane - the view of the runway is better.

Hi

I know the house you mean jul, i live in Castle donington myself and live on the same road, but about a mile down, i am on the new estate, but when i drive by the purple one, i always think, what a beauty !!!!!!

The people that moan, GET A LIFE, like jul said, when you brought your house here, you knew there was an airport in the area ????????

I live in donno and to be honest, as we are not on a flightpath it is quiet here, you hear the occasional roar but that is it.

Glad to hear the Jamaica flight went full, maybe more new long haul routes will come, what about this UKia , what is the score here ? they sound well dodgy to me, as i rang them up last week to enquire about Cabin crew vacancies, and all they were bothered about, was how i got there phone number, i said the website, but then they said how did you find the website etc ??????

I just hung up, as i felt i was being interrogated !!!!!

Take care all

I heard Leics Police were ready to shut all the access roads today, 'cos they found a vehicle in the medium stay car park "full of gas canisters".

Anyone care to comment?

Thanks for the update. It caused havoc outside the airport though as the Pol were preparing to shut down all access roads.

All's well that ends well.
