Ooh, more roadworks, can't wait!

Luton Borough Council has selected Scott Wilson as the preferred bidder to design the upgrade of the M1 Luton Spur junction.

The existing roundabout is plagued by congestion, and the new design is expected to reduce this.
The project hopes to achieve better access to Luton airport and new residential and commercial developments at the former Vauxhall Motors site, which has been branded a key economic driver for the town and surrounds.
The junction will eventually be transofrmed into a grade-separated interchange.
The commission will start immediately and will be completed by the end of 2009.

The road needs upgrading badly. Since traffic flows have increased on the M1 the tailback in the morning extends onto the motorway.

I see the A505 diversion route is the subject of an independent set of major roadworks which has just started. http://www.luton.gov.uk/media%20libr...%20leaflet.pdf

More snow

While it rained at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, good old Luton has had another 5 hours of snow and it is still snowing hard. Not very scientific as I am not going outside but I can't see any rubber on the bottom of the car tyres so I guess it must be a good 4 - 5 inches of fresh snow. The snow clearers on the runway have described the conditions as Lapland.

The snow clearers have obviously never been to Lapland then!

12 noon - Runway still closed...

The runway is still closed at LTN and the terminal is in chaos, with passengers arriving and no where to check-in. The airport will not allow airlines to check passengers in until the runway has opened...

Also hearing on 3CR the traffic queues going up to the terminal are horrendous and taking 30-45mins to get from motorway up to the drop-down area!

The snow clearers on the runway have described the conditions as Lapland.
Compared to the size of their funny cleaning "equipment" 10 cm of snow with "heavy" snowfall can be like Lapland.

I still can't belive that SkyNews is showing people standing outside on nice black roads in a snow which looks to be approx 3 flakes/minute and talking about the horrific, terrific, heavy snowfall (which was btw forecasted 3 days ago) and idiots driving more than 30 mph.

The traffic from the airport was reported to have been taking in excess of 2 hours to get to the M1, which had 2 lanes closed northbound. I can confirm that from the M1 to the airport around 6 large snowmen have appeared at the side of the road and in the central reservation of the A505 and Junction 10A of the motorway.

Also the shuttle bus was not running from the station so streams of passengers pulling luggage had to leg it to the airport

Runway was open by 12.15
But only one taxiway onto the runway is open so the flow rate is almost zero

A Bit Of Good News

Having now decamped to sunnier and warmer parts and having time to do more research, I see that practically all the easyJet services that were curtailed are ready to reappear at the start of the summer timetable at the end of March. Monarch are also reintroducing services to Faro and Palma but not Almeria. Also interesting to note is that Transavia are introducing a Sunday morning service on their Rotterdam route and with the new and extra Wizz services I thought I would try to cheer you all up a bit!

See Luton is closed again. Why ? Living only 3 miles from the airport, it is not snowing, and there doesn't appear to be any fresh snow overnight.

Living 3 miles away you should, therefore, realise that it has been snowing all night, and is still snowing now.....Rwy closed until 0800 earliest.

I would guess the line of snow is following the line of the Chiltern hills (it normally does)?

Monarch Scheduled said the recent cold snap in the UK had seen the British public ‘leaving in their droves’, with Tenerife and Lanzarote proving particularly popular.

Monarch carried 180,060 passengers on its scheduled services last month, 8.4% more than in January 2008, while load factor rose by 2.3pp to 75.8%.

Snow

The airport are doing well on the manouvering area, there are even grab lorries now removing the piles of snow that the ploughs have pushed into huge mounds on a couple of stands. The accidents on the capability green carriageway were unfortunate, making that the worst part of the experience.
I do feel for the hundreds of people lying around the terminal and hiking up and down the hill. I've gotta do it myself! Car stuck here now!
Heres hoping for 1300 opening.

mmmmmm if i had the resources how many coffees and marsbars could i sell to the queuing traffic.?

According to that site there will be a route from Antalya to every other airport served by Wizz ...

The Wizz website shows one route from AYT - Kiev. Sounds far more realistic
