LUTON - 6
I have always been surprised at the paucity of charter routes from Luton. The charter airlines piled into Gatwick with massive capacity but all Luton ever had was the 'bog standard' routes. The smaller Greek islands, Tunisia, Morocco, even Italy are far better served from Gatwick and always have been, despite the catchment area benefit of Luton.
In terms of Long Haul, there have been a few routes served over the years. Orlando was served in the 90s by Monarch, I think CP Air operated to Toronto one year, and the Britannia 707s operated to Georgetown, Guyana, the US (NYC?), and even Australia during the 70s but none of these services lasted long.

Just found these figures for the 787-8:
JAR25 Takeoff Field Length 9255. feet
115% Factored All-Eng. Dist 8785. feet
Balanced Field Length 9255. feet
Not sure how that fits into Luton's 7087 ft!

Stansted with its 10,0000 runway is not exactly awash with long haul airlines and routes.

The 787 has been designed with the smaller airport in mind. I'll be very surprised if in the medium to long term, there aren't regular 787 services out of the airport.
As for other routes, totally agree with one poster - why there aren't direct services to Pakistan and the East Coast of India I don't know. The 767 has a long enough range.

This may answer why 3 based airlines have more aircraft based in Gatwick.

I know it's a bank holiday weekend but 1 hour from joining the queue for security to getting to the main lounge area seems a very long time along with a very long queue seems excessively disorganised.
Did something go particularly wrong with security or was there some sort of system failure this morning ?

Guess this was first thing this morning in the morning rush. The security area is not big enough now and is part of plans to physically expand this area and add extra lanes. The bad news is that any expansion will be at least 2 years away I would have thought as a planning application has yet to go in to the council.
The policy at the airport always seems to be wait to a bottleneck is at bursting point and then think about doing something about it. Luton could never be seen as being proactive to reducing congestion.

I see there are 28 flights taking Chelsea fans to the Champions League final from London's airports. So how much of that traffic is coming from Luton? Just one Jet2 737

You are missing the point. There are already 28 flights, most are going from Gatwick with Heathrow and Stansted adding to the numbers. Luton gets just one. Is it the case that Luton is now not seen as a charter airport?

The Chelsea team, I believe, have not used Luton for a few years now whereas Arsenal and Spurs do. I don't think the owners 767 comes in either. Might be related?

Being realistic there isnt alot of room to Park up tonnes of CL flights at LTN anymore is there?
I remember the Barca game all that appeared were a couple of Fokker 100's a Mint 757 and Spanair Airbus. Alot of Executive jets though not unexpected.
May as well just send them to Essex, They have alot of spare room all day long.
