I think Sam you are living in dream world if you think you are going to get any service guarantee from anyone. As the UK Border Agency is a government institution I suggest you write to Dave and ask him what he is going to do about it. Some years ago I remember people complained about the lack of staff at UK Border posts and were told in no uncertain terms by members of staff write to Tony Blair or Gordon Brown!
Also I have used other London airports and have to queue to get through but for some reason Luton seems to be the worst unfortunately. As I said earlier ''Welcome to the UK''.

I have never used LTN but it cant be as bad as arriving in peak times at STN .

Even though STN has loads of desks/staff the area where the transit train and stairs where Ryanair passengers meet is not big enough to cope I have seen people pushing there way off the transit into a packed hall and Ryanair passengers waiting on the bridge before the stairs ... This is only a peak times though, There has been many times when I have gone straight to one of many desks..

Gatwick is not a lot better, especially if several wide bodies arrive at the same time.

When I came through there in April it was dreadful. They did eventually open some more desks, but I don't think one of them smiled!

I have travelled through both Stansted and Gatwick at really peak times in the last 2 weeks, but neither was taking as long as Luton with 2 hours !
it really is disgaceful, Sunday evening at 22.00 STN was about 30 mins plane to taxi
I wonder could anybody find Lorraine Chase, and get her to sing a ditty about
' Loot airport '
if I remember correctly the management werent best please last time, she sang about them.

The Airport have no control over HM Immigration, unfortunately it is the Airport itself that seems to get the flack because the flying public don't know better.

Can someone (who knows - no guessing please) explain the exact nature of the relationship between Luton Airport and the Govt agency handling immigration ?

Yes, I understand that punters buy flights, airline passes some money onto airport, and airport passes some money onto Govt to fund immigration desk. What I don't understand is how the payment to the Govt is structured. Is there a fee per inbound passenger ? Does the fee vary depending on the time of day or night ? Is the fee calculated based on the propotion of people from EU and non-EU countries last year ? Does the Govt give any formal commitment to the airport under the contract ? etc etc etc

So you are not allowed to park a vehicle within 3 metres of an airside fence as a vehicle can be used to get over a fence. Despite signs every 10m, I counted 14 cars and vans that are parked right against the fence in the car park of the Holiday Inn Express today.

It gets worse, the last 2 days at 6pm I have been walking with the wife and her stupid dog over Wigmore Park. Somehow on both days a guy has got between the long term car park fence and the Wigmore Park fence. There is nothing between him and the runway yet for 2 days he is standing there taking photos.

I see a new tower is being built by the side of the existing ground radar tower. I assume this will replace the existing ground radar.

I thought the location of the ground radar which predates much of the airports expansion had dead zones with no coverage, which was why the airport invested in multi-location radar a few years ago. I think it was mentioned here that this original replacement radar was never commissioned due to problems with the supplier. Can anyone confirm my posts as being correct?

New wizzair route

Wizzair have announced a new route from Luton to Lodz in Poland commencing 13th September on a three times weekly schedule. Interesting to see if it has any effect on Ryanair's Stansted's service to the Polish city. Next for Wizzair Szczecin from Luton?

Yes indeed, Falcon666
I wanted to say that when I heard on the news this morning that all of UK Borders will be affected by the big public sector strikes tomorrow, airport immigration all over the country will fell like LTN immigration at 7:30-8:30 every day.

I've noticed in the past week from about 2200 to 0100 many inbound arrivals from the south seem to fly direct to overhead or slightly south of the field, then turn outbound as if on a procedural ILS (as opposed to vectors direct to the ILS course). Any comments from ATC or active pilots at LTN?

kala87 - re arrivals

It's normally to keep Luton inbounds clear of LOREL and the Stansted inbounds. Once they've passed the Luton overhead they can be turned downwind and descended. Can't be done during the day, but at night when there's less around (no LCY for example), it seems to work well.

The replacement ground radar tower not finished yet but after a fleeting glance yesterday it appears to be taller than the old one.

So what is happening at Signature? Hangar 63 which is their new one in the North West corner has been closed and all the exec jets kicked out. A fence has been erected 10m out from the hangar line reducing the parking available in the North West corner thus bringing the hangar landside instead of airside.

The Govt Agency which carries out Passport Checks is the UK Border Agency. This is their purpose in life from their website. "The UK Border Agency is responsible for securing the UK border and controlling migration in the UK. We manage border control for the UK, enforcing immigration and customs regulations. We also consider applications for permission to enter or stay in the UK, and for citizenship and asylum".

It certainly used to be the case that Airports were obliged to provide all facilities free of charge for them. Not sure if there is a throughput fee though nowadays.

It seems the contractors are in fitting out the hangar with heating and other facilities prior to Gulfstream moving in.

I think Hangar 125 is being refurbed for lease to Gulfstream.
Hangars 63 & 102 are being given back to Signature.
