FLYGLOBESPAN REDUCING ROUTES, EASTERN REDUCING ROUTES, NO BASED THOMSONFLY AIRCRAFT NEXT YEAR, NO MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS BEING DONE TO THE AIRPORT, THE FUTURE DOES NOT LOOK BRIGHT FOR DTVA.
ITS GREAT TO BE BACKED BY A MAJOR COMPANY SUCH AS PEEL

We can all be critical of Peel and DTVA, as demonstrated by the many differing opinions in previous posts on this thread.
As an old boss of mine used to say, ‘’I don’t want to know what the problems are, I want your solutions’’. What’s yours then??

There probably isn't one easy solution, there are too many factors at play,
I'm highly critical of Globespan, (they messed up my trip) .But I don't suggest that is totally the fault of the Airport, the many threads on Globespan seem to indicate this is an operator who has grown too quickly, and hasn't neccessarily got the hang of it all yet.
However one major issue is that Peel have spun this airport development plan up its own backside, and I believe that Thomson, BMI, maybe now Globespan have latched on to this. There seems to be no prospect of serious money being spent by the owners at EGNV in the near or even medium term future and this will naturally deter Airlines from developing routes.Add to this minor domestic houskeeping issues like ATC staffing problems. Then look at the demographics of the area and it's very hard to see real growth in the face of the opposition "up the road" and "down 't mottoway"
I've said before Peel Holdings are first and foremost a property developer and Teesside is a good flat site, with two neighbouring councils who are both wondering where the next big development will come from.

There is no short term fix. But you need to start at the top. Peel themselves have to commit to a massive investment to improve the infra structure, transport links and the airport itself. Then you need to question as to wheher "Hugh & the boys" are the right team for the job of driving the airport forwards. Above all you need a) patience as it will take time, & b) hope that the air travellers of the NE buy into the concept allowing services to be introduced to support the demand created. In taking a reality check, this is not going to happen overnight & Peel themselves have never shy'd away from the fact that payback for them is release of airport land 'for development'.

I don’t know the answer either, which is why I’m not paid large wads of cash to be an airport MD or a marketing manager. However, I do know that HL was on local radio on Tuesday once again stating that Peel were committed to the long term future of MME and were investing a total of around £56million over the next 10 to 15 years. (I don’t know where he plucked the figure from as I understood it was around £20million). The strategy he outlined was to put the facilities in place first in order to attract the airline operators, which in turn would then attract the additional passengers. Whether this will work of course is open to debate as things can change dramatically over 10 to 15 years. I’m sure we all remember the proposed major freight facility that eventually came to nothing, and like carbheathot, I too am getting thoroughly sick of the constant spin and lack of anything ever materialising in reality.

To be fair to GSM, they’ve done their fair share of advertising their flights and holidays in the local rags on a regular basis, but there’s only so many times that most people can, or want to, go to Palma, Alicante, Malaga, etc, and most airports are awash with the same destinations anyway. What we might need are some destinations that aren’t saturated with flights from every airport and operator in the country. Highly unlikely however, as MME’s 10 years behind everyone else because of a lack of investment and failure to introduce and then sustain some basic routes when the lo-co boom began.

I enquired about the possibility of a new service to Cork earlier this year following the departure of bmibaby. The response was cut and pasted straight from an airport press release along the lines of ‘we’re constantly talking to operators about introducing new routes, so keep looking at our website’. No acknowledgement that anything was going to be done with my request to gauge the need for alternative destinations. Perhaps that’s why we get nothing more than the usual bucket and spade flights and is one of the reasons for people complaining on here about cuts occurring from September onwards ?

Vicious circle regarding improving infrastructure, do you spend the money in the hope the pax will come or do you wait until the pax come then improve. I wouldn't spend lots of my money until it was near certain of a return.

MMETEESSIDE: IT HAS BEEN SAID FROM MANY DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS THAT EASTERN ARE REDUCING THE BRU ROUTE.

SKYMAN771 AND DB5: RIGHT ON ALL YOU GET IS SPIN FROM THE TOP, THEY SHOW OF PLANS AND IDEAS AND NOTHING HAPPENS, I TO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THE £56 MILLION AS I HEARD IT WAS £20 MILLION AND THAT WAS OVER 5 YEARS, AND THAT WAS SAID 2 YEARS AGO. WHAT HAVE WE GOT? A NEW FRONT TO A SY TERMINAL.

ALSO BY WHATS BEEN SAID ROUND THE AIRPORT DONT THINK HL WILL BE HERE MUCH LONGER, RUMOUR HAS IT HI IS LEAVING, GOT A NEW JOB ON THE TEESSIDE DEVELOPMENT BOARD.

I HAVE BEEN AT THE AIRPORT OVER 10 YAERS AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME, THE AIRPORT THINKS IT CAN GET MORE BUSINESS BY PROMISING TO BUILD SOMETHING, WHEN AIRLINES WANT TO SEE IT BEFORE THE DECIDE. DTVA NEEDS TO PULL ITS HEAD OUT ITS A, AND EITHER MAKE THE TERMINAL THEY HAVE LOOK CLEAN AND TIDY INSTEAD OF THE MESS IT IS, AND THEN WORK ON UPGRADING THE RAMP, I.E. MORE STANDS, PARALLEL TAXIWAY. OR START BUILDING THE NEW TERMINAL BUILDING.

yes i know they don't happen over night, but DTVA has talked about expansion for years and nothing ever happens, i.e the south side cargo terminal. I'm the first person who will rejoice if the airport expands, but when you've worked here for so long and see how little actually gets done, you start to believe that it seems to make no differance what is promised nothing appears.

I think that rather than wasting time on the terminal front they should of got on with the parrallel taxiway and installing stop bars aswell, which I know many have been asking for. Maybe the managment are waiting for the winter when it will be quieter before starting any major works. Do bear in mind in terms of movements MME is as busy if not busier than LBA in the summer.

totally agree with the parallel taxiway, but as for waiting for winter, the airport didn't do that for improvments on the car park, or the new access road or even the terminal front, where you had to walk through a building site to get into the building. Which at one point caused a major complaint from passengers, when a flight was cancelled the airport decided to put the passengers bags for them to collect outside near terminal entry and exit point there was children climbing over the rubble and passengers had difficulty in finding there own bags as it was very poorly lite.

this resulted in the story being published in one of the local rags

The airport got planning permission granted in Feb of this after a two year deliberation with the councils, you cannot build something if you do not have permission!

Once permission is granted as it is only in outline form detailed plans then have to be submitted and agreed.

Rob

Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MME movements for April were 5773.
LBA movements for April were 5699.
Now if I'm not mistaken that would make MME busier in terms of movements.
Rob you should really check your information before posting.

Yes, but just to show you can prove anything with statistics, the biggest category at Leeds is air transport movements (MME 880, LBA 3192) and at DTVA it's club aircraft (MME 3317, LBA 1347)

I don't particularily wish to jump to RobT100's defence, but I think he was refering to ATM's which according to the CAA figures for June, MME did 1106 and LBA 3805.

In terms of overall movements MME may do more, but I'm sceptical if the revenue generated from Cessna type circuit traffic justifies parallel taxiway investment.

Personally, I would be more concerned how the airport will invest to close the gap reduction of 16.4% passenger throughput in the last rolling 12 months.

Just to set the record straight, I have absolutely no axe to grind with DTV airport. I do however think what you said onion was a touch daft:

Please take a look at the arrivals departures board for DTV and LBA over ANY period for say 24hours and tell me which one FAR outweighs the other. I am not including Joe Bloggs touching down in his Cessna every 2 minutes as a movement, that would be silly to call it that.

Right lets get the record straight here, I said MME was busier than LBA in terms of movements, this is a fact you can't argue with the stats.
I did not say what type of movments because my point had nothing to do with the type of movement it was purely how busy MME is. Secondly I was using it as an example for not doing taxiway work during the summer, it was not a dig in anyway at LBA. Thirdly the traffic may not be generating loads of money but they are still movements that have to be taken into account by ATC. Fourthly the current taxiways at MME are in a shocking state, apart from the central taxiway they are limited on weight and width, the best and most sensible option is to put a parrallel taxiway in. Once this is in place aircraft will no longer have to backtrack all the time, resulting in efficency and savings for everyone.
I wish some of the posters on here read and actually understand a post before replying. It leads to embarrasment on all parts in the end.
On my part I will in future try and explain fully what I am trying to get at to minimise the risk of readers misinterpreting my posts.

So what is the business case for a parallel taxiway i.e how would the investment generate extra revenue/profit?
