If the Government were to offer bmi a subsidy to continue, which they won't, but if they did, bmi, or rather Lufthansa, would reject it because they have more lucrative ideas for the LHR slots.

Someone suggested to me the other day that KLM will be next to go - they'll chop us and put bigger aircraft into both Newcastle and Leeds, not because they want to, but because Peel will get shirty with them when the contract comes up for renewal.

Alicante and Barcelona Girona will stop for the Winter again and I just don't think they'll return the following Summer. After the loss of London Heathrow and Dublin, we're still in a nose dive, and we may not recover from it at all - if, and it's a big if, ALC and GRO do return after next Winter, then, and only then, can we start to think about things improving.

I usually am optimistic, but over the past few months my optimism has turned into realism, despite how depressing it is.

Why would Peel get shirty with KLM? Peel are keen to encourage KLM as they will also serve Liverpool from the end of this month. The Peel/KLM relationship is very strong with hopes that KLM may move from Humberside to Doncaster Sheffield

I think what the person who said it meant is that Peel aren't exactly good when it comes to putting good deals together, and KLM might not like what they have to offer.

I hope you're right though!!

Taken from Peel website :-
Meanwhile figures announced by the Civil Aviation Authority show that passenger numbers at Durham Tees Valley fell by 12 per cent last year —in line with reductions at many other regional airports, including Newcastle. A total of 655,017 terminal and transit passengers flew from Durham Tees Valley in 2008 compared to 743,727 the previous year.
Interesting to note specific reference to NCL in looking for comfort / justification, perhaps they should use their own operations such as LPL as a benchmark. It would appear that at least something rattles them ! Given recent events then at this time the achievement of pax no.'s of anywhere near 650,000 for 2009 must appear pure fantasy !

I didn't say they would I said they are trying as Manchester failed to get Wizz Air to transfer from Liverpool to Manchester. Any airport company will try to pinch competitors business. Whether they are successful is another matter.

They tried to attract KLM to DSA before and failed, this is highlighted in the competition commission report into the BAA monopoly... Whether it will happen is another story, a few people have suggested a number of reasons why they wouldnt move to DSA whatever the deal they get...

Klm-dtv

Long time no post.

so sad these threads on DTV but as most contributers have noted, the future is non too good.

Can I prophetise,KLM will stop the night stopping Amsterdam this winter but still opearate three per day. Not a major blow but a pain non the less?

Dont shot the messanger and wait until winter schedules are released before shouting me down!!

Is the ending of the KLM nightstop only happening at MME, or is it going to happen at other UK airports, does anyone know? Isn't the first departure to AMS the busiest of the day?

I hope this isn't the start of messing about with schedules, then smaller aircraft and then stopping the service......

KLM is not essential to the existance of Teesside airport but undeniably it is important.
The more important users of the airport revenue wise are holiday charters. This has been discussed at length and I will not labour the point.
At the moment there are effectively only two holiday companies in the UK. I have been using both of them in their various guises for 30 years and have never yet paid full price for a holiday. However, this year is the thinnest year ever for value holidays which are usually called late deals. There are virtually none. This suggests that either they have sold all of their holidays or that they are holding their collective nerves and hoping that people will pay the full price for a holiday even at the last minute. I am not a great believer in poker selling therefore it would appear that they have reduced their holiday numbers and are happy with their loading.
This year is gone and we must therefore look forward to the Winter 09 and the Summer 10 seasons.
With a bumper 09 Summer season in progress we must approach both companies with offers they cannot refuse for the follow on seasons. Every stop must be pulled out to secure their continuance in MME and we must sell the airport to them with whatever it takes.
In the meantime if anyone in authority at MME wants to make a name for themselves I guarantee that I came double the meagre revenue stream from passengers with a relatively small £8/10 K investment.
I will of course need the terminal to be renamed as recompense. Parmo International will suffice I think.

Government are announcing that they will look at measures to safeguard regional airport links to LHR. Dont hold your breath but IF it translates into subsidies AND earmarking slots that might leave the way open to someone opening the Heathrow route. Won't likely be BMI as the dafties at Peel are suing them in the High Courts for the withdrawal of the baby services.

Don't know what ale you were on when you wrote this, suffice to say that the remainder of your rant based on your 30 year holiday experiences confirms it was pretty strong stuff & maybe lemonade would suit you better!

What you really need to take on board is that Peel Holdings (Airports) Ltd which is responsible for operating predominantly LPL, DTV & DCS reported a trading loss of >£10M in the year to 31 March 08, & "horrendous" borrowings of >£80M of which short term debt >£48M. Not a good place to be! & judging from the appointment / resignation of directors in 2007/08, heads have been brought to account. The only contribution that I can see that the airports have added to the otherwise profitable Peel Group as a whole is the availability of the losses for group relief ! In summary it's Airports in 2008 were not a strong point of Peel and I would suggest that 2009 has been another bad year !. Clearly much resource has gone into LPL and perhaps this is where they are able to attach their hopes for the future. Now getting back to my point IF Peel win the case against BMI & receive a large injection of funds then in my opinion you must be totally naive if you believe that DTV will see much, if any of the cash !

Even if this does go through, as you said, bmi won't do it, not necessarily because we're taking them to court, but because they've already found new use for our slots. No-one else will do it either because no-one else is suited to doing it. However, I'm tempted to look at the bigger picture here, if this does go through, I'll be happy for all the other airports around the Country that will have protected access to LHR.

Is that definite, that they've found a new use for the LHR slots?

Hmmmm
Skyman
1. KLM at present are absolutely essential to the survival of Teesside, but the other guy is also right about the holiday traffic which is also essential to the future of Teesside
2. I don't know how much you know about the airports owners, whilst all losses are of course undesirable, £10m quid is not big spuds to Peel Holdings
3. I cant see anyone on here who thinks that any money from the Court case will end up as hard cash investment at Teesside

I'm assuming so, since LH is using BD to launch London Heathrow - Berlin Tegel, Milan Malpensa and a third as well I think, Munich iirc?

The airports side actualy comes under Peel Airports, in the Peel Holdings umbrella. They could effectively give them the chop at any time if the losses continue to be unsustainable. That is worrying considering Peels ruthlessness at developing land.
