Are we any closer to this part-runway extension?

I saw the local politicians banging on about it the other day.

"If we get a longer runway then we can fly to many more destinations, yada yada, yada... "

What about using those routes currently available?????

Apologies for my ignorance on the subject but does the length of Aberdeen's runway really effect the routes operating to/from the airport? Correct me if I am wrong but did Globespan not fly direct from Aberdeen to Egypt and the Canaries? If so, what routes, currently out of reach, does Aberdeen want to attract?

ABZ Runway

Flyglobespan never did get to Sharm from Aberdeen, although they did do Tenerife, with a 737-800, but the load factor would probably have been better with the extension. Spanair going to Tenerife, used to tech stop in Santiago (Northern Spain) using an Airbus. Aircraft regularly leave Aberdeen non-stop to Houston, Cairo, etc but that's biz jets for you. The extension is all about getting airborne, legally, with a decent load and arriving at a popular destination without a costly stop on route.

Cool Achtung Baby

Sharm sold about 200 seats, I seem to rcall. Not quite enough for it to start.

Couple of press reports of lufthansa looking at an ABZ-FRA route, trying "to tap into the oil & gas industry". What, where have they been these last 30yrs?

Would guess bmi regional could be involved if anything comes to pass?

Anyone looking to restart an Alicante route?

I saw the report in The Times, but it seemed to be a bit confused as it talked about "existing routes" from EDI and GLA even though LH don't offer any flights from GLA. It also said that pax numbers were up on these flights, even though EDI has been cut back to once daily this winter - How that can translate to a rise in pax numbers I have no idea! Where were the other reports?

That said, GLA-FRA has been mentioned a few times recently and I have heard tell of NCL as well.

Anyone clock the return of the Thomson 763 yesterday? I saw it on its positioning flight climbing out of runway 16. Impresive rate of climb, albeit it was empty in the back & lightly fuelled!

Bet the holidaymakers were glad to be back from all that sun & heat in the Caribbean!

Important information: Airport Closed Last updated: 5:15am
Following advice from the Met Office, the airspace around Aberdeen Airport has been closed by National Air Traffic Service (NATS) as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the UK from Iceland. The airport is closed until further notice and all departing and arriving flights have been suspended. Passengers intending to fly today are asked to contact their airline for further information and should expect disruption in the coming hours. Updates will be issued throughout the morning.

Ash Thursday

Wonder how long ops will be disrupted? Aren't the winds meant to be out of the NW for the next few days? Is that volcano still erupting (believe it's sub-glacial).

Are the offshore helis affected too or can they go VFR?

Trump

Hi all.

Trust his 727 is well guarded - don't want those pesky tree huggers getting their paws on it!

Seems determined to press on with his vision!

Plenty talk about renewables as the new "North Sea". Would this provide a source of work for ABZ in the years ahead, eg. heli companies transporting workers to projects being commissioned, rather like the heyday of the oil sector. Don't expect for a minute that it would be as busy as the peak of N.Sea oil & gas. Or is it all pie in the sky, straws in the wind?

Struggling to see where future growth would come from. Traffic continues to fall, the area needs something to spark growth again.

Actually traffic has levelled out if not rising slightly.
We were averaging the lower 300's a few weeks ago.
Due to the ash wx etc on the catchup days we were over 400 most days last week, and with the arrival of new ships/rigs in the past couple of weeks we seem to be mid to high 300's most days now

Robust, safe and fit for purpose? My a e. IMHO it is in no way better than what was there before. A lot needs to change.

More bugs than a tramps vest.

Reading of more contractions at ABZ with T3 axing BGO & reducing Tees Valley. Follows on from T3 also axing Oslo earlier in the year.

Tough times indeed...May pax at ABZ were down from (I think) over 290,000 in 2008 to ovr 230,000 this year. Quite a drop.

When will things turn around, if ever?
