To all XL staff;
From all 15 crew on the BA154 from Cairo this morning, just wanted to say that our thoughts are with you all and all the very, very best for the future.
We brought some passengers back from eygpt this morning who were due to fly back from Hurgharda yesterday.
Talking to them, they were grateful to be on, but some of the 'XL have treat us really bad' stories really started to annoy us and we had to put a stop to it and remind them that you guys are out of work., and to spare a thought for you guys. They'd had their holidays and were being repatriated and no cost to them. Some people selfishness nowadays really astounds me sometimes.
I guess sometimes at BA we can be a bit complaicant, thinking we'll be ok because we are a big, established airline. Today was a stark reminder that it can happen to anyone it these uncertain times.

1700 jobs is not that big an issue. It is sad for those involved but then thousands of other people are losing their jobs every week at the moment. It probably because of the other thousands losing their jobs that put XL under.

The flight crew and cabin crew unions should guarantee a ‘get you home’ payment if any crew are stuck away from base. Why don’t they have this? Such a guarantee would be a very small fraction of the union membership cost.

Repat funds
Way back in the early 70s I did ask our Head of BALPA PLC (Pilots Local Council) & our Senior BASSA rep what if any provisions there were for members of shut down operations. Neither could answer, nor could BALPA HQ nor BASSA national convener. I was in the 'sandpit' when Laker went 'tits-up' & I know that crew were offered repat seats/jump seats at no charge, not just on UK carriers. There are times when the industry does pull together, it is the biggest and best club in the world that does look after it's own sometimes, now is a time for it to do it again.

Just like to add my sympathy to all the guys n gals XL.
Just last week i was made redundant myself, although from a different industry. Unfortunatly its a sign of the times and things will get worse before they get better.
It hacks me off that all these oil companys are announcing billion £ profits and yet companies, and individuals are struggling with rising oil prices!!
I wish everyone affected sucess in finding a new job!
On a side note, i notice Monarch are sending flight MON1122R to Orlando Sanford to pick up some of those affected by the XL collapse and the aircraft is showing as a DC10
I know they used to have 10's but thought they are retired a few years back? Any Ideas where they got it??

for me chrisbl, it is an issue, and i imagine it is to my 1699 colleagues also.......
with regards to the flight from SFB which diverted to CDG, the passengers were told inflight and although they may not have been too pleased, they were very supportive to the crew. No one got angry with the crew and they understood that we were as much in the dark as to what happened when we got to CDG as they were. We certainly appreciated their applause and cheers for us when we landed on what was XL UK's last ever flight.

No redundancy, no salary, £60.43 a week to live on with in excess of £2k per month outgoings! Don't tell me its not that big a deal.

Sadly, the other thing to remember is to look after your own interests, because no one else is likely to do it for you. Especially ask for legal advice if you're asked to sign anything - you don't have to agree to anything in order to get the statutory minimum payout. That's where a decent union rep can help out, getting the appropriate qualified advice out to people.
Don't forget networking - friends and colleagues from past jobs may have the inside track on suitable vacancies with their current employers. Make sure they know you're looking.
Read what they say carefully. Don't be afraid to seek independent advice, particularly if they want your signature for something.

Thank-you for all the kind messages, situations like this bring out the best and worst in people!. Some of the passenger comments have almost had me foaming at the mouth

Any job loss is terrible be it 5 people in a small company or 1,700 XL employees. We all have bills to pay and mouths to feed. Ever heard the phrase "if nothing nice to say, say nothing at all?" Kindly bugger off!!

Sorry to sound like the Chairman of the TUC but again the unions should - indeed must - offer legal advice. They spend a zillion on fees to big law firms for exactly these situations. Get in touch with your union. If you are working for an airline still flying, and not in one for goodness sake join one, so you can get some decent advice if things go wrong. Anyone can join a union, EVEN If your airline does not recognise them or negotiate with them. That doesn’t matter. You can still join and get advice, particularly legal advice.

Some of those effected have already responded to your 'foot in mouth' statement. I'll resist the temptation to call you a............Phil Wyatt (where did that come from?)
To add another 1700 to the thousands you refer to makes a big issue even bigger (that's simple maths!)
You obviously have nothing relevant to offer regarding the demise of XL so quit belittling the situation these poor souls find themselves in. The greater scheme of things can be discussed elsewhere.

To all XL Pilots, Cabin Crew, Kosmar reps,
Over the past 5 years starting and ending holiday with you all, may I wish you all the best in finding emploment in your chosen career.
Both Airport Desks,Pilots, Crew and Kosmar reps did an excelent job with Passion on finding and returning the Wife's Purse left on board the Plane this year after we landed at kefalonia in August.
They did an excellent job both inbound and outbound, during the return flight they had run out of meals to buy, what realy cheesed me of was some of the nagging passengers winging at them blaming them about this, its wasn't there fault and never was, but after the colapse of XL uk I now know why, all trying their damn hardest to deliver customer satisfaction with limited resources.
I know its those idiot greedy shareholders like the Oil/Energy/Bank/football & City barrons that want more & more return for their investments/product for the High life, and if they dont get it, they throw their Teddys out of the pram and refuse to invest and support to prevent 1700 dedicated profesional people from being unemployed and the holiday makers who have saved all year for their hols tobe shafted by the Rich and greedy.
Dont forget greedy b the real people make this world tick without then your all stuffed.
