It's very sad.
Fond memories of Coventry in 1966 with ACE Freighters.
Best of luck to all that are based there.
It would be a very bad time for any alternate enterprises.

Such a shame to read this.

If the worst happens and the airport does not open again, I hope Atlantic Airlines find a new home. Aside from those already suggested, maybe Durham Tees Valley would be worth a look. There is spare hangarage and plenty of land for development.

Best of luck to those affected.

Wasn't it the local authority that denied planning permission for a terminal building resulting in the loss of the lo-co flights?

Yes, unfortunately the airport lies just within Warwickshire and the county council has firmly stood against any expansion, including a new terminal building. Coventry City Council who owned the airport until the mid 90's have always supported the airport. There is a "Nimby" attitude from few residents in rural Warwickshire which have done their best for several years to close the airport. I hope that AAG or similar get the funds together to operate it themselves.

WHBM

the local authority was precisely why CVT remains the dump it is today. TOM tried and got shot down by the local ecomentalists and the half wit ex greengrocer mentality masquerading as a local "authority". Most of them would struggle running a bath, never mind civic amenities. Meanwhile, a good few TOM crews were terrifyingly close to being fired as the Ops were wound up and we now get to reap the rewards of that as any number of TOM pilots await their fate any day soon. Sure, not the cause but it was about as much help as ashtrays on a motorbike.

An opportunity to put a second rate Midlands town at least notionally on the map with attendant local growth and employment opportunities neatly sent pan wards.

Bravo!

I think this is disastrous news in many ways. No doubt the NIMBYS and the green luvvie duvvies will be jumping for joy.

Coventry is of considerable benefit especially to the general aviation operators who provide welcome employment during these challenging times.

UK still seems to have a very parochial approach to aviation - would this be allowed to happen, say, in France where even the smallest cities seem to have well maintained local airports with good facilities?

Let's hope someone steps in and buys Coventry which is a significant asset to aviation in the Midlands.

As someone who lives in Coventry and did a large part of his PPL training at a school on EGBE, this is indeed very sad news. I really hope that someone can recover the situation.

May I add my comiserations to the other flying training organisations who have been operating there since it became Coventry's airfield in the days of the Sir W.G. Armstrong Witworth company. I sincerely hope that they can survive this unfortunate event.

Atlantic

Passed BHX this afternoon and there seemed to be several Atlantique aircraft in there, at least 1 ATP and it looked like several Cesna 400s. Obviously a tempory measure, lets hope they return to Coventry soon.

BHX taken by surprise as much as others....I think some of the freight traffic will continue for a while. BlueCity Aviation are handling them again. The Atlantic stuff is just temporary as far as I can tell. BHX don't have the Hangers to accommodate them long term. I presume the contracted out coastal stuff and other RVL group aircraft will be OK at wherever they have contracted to...
Lima taxiway (Old 06 runway) on stand bye for any long term parking.

Sorry to hear the bad news, hope they manage to turn things around soon.

If any ATCOs are interested there's still a vacancy available up here at Prestwick.

Best of luck to you all

It appears the airfield may be open unlicensed from 0800 tomorrow until, provisionally, Monday.

Very sad day.... going way back to my night freight schedules (which I loathed) CVT was at least a friendly and helpful turnaround... good luck to all who depend on the place for their livelyhood...

I heard Atlantic Airways were moving to Hawarden/Broughton near Chester. Certainly been round !Central location, loads of spare engineering workforce capacity in local area and with shedloads of Welsh development aid money I guess they will get loads of dosh for new facilities..........hangar etc etc.

70 jobs to go, making for a very sad Christmas in a lot of homes. Birmingham ATC will pick up some extra airspace.

That's very sad to hear. Being an ex CVT shed jockey. I always had a soft spot for the place, even if it was on borrowed time really.

It was poorly managed, but it got shafted by the council. I hope the people who've lost their jobs find positions quickly.
