From earlier this week ...

Waterford Airport today checked in its 100,000th passenger for 2007, a record-breaking year for the regional airport which serves the southeast with scheduled flights to London-Luton; Birmingham and Manchester as well as summer routes to France, Portugal and Spain.

The champagne was popped by airport CEO, Graham Doyle, when Michelle Brown, travelling to Birmingham on the 3.10 pm Aer Arann flight, brought the annual passenger total into six figures in one year for the first time. In addition to the champagne toast, Ms Brown was presented with tickets for free flights from Waterford Airport.

“The excellent performance of the airport has been due in no small measure to the success of Aer Arann, which reported in August that the Waterford to London Luton route was its most successful, having reached a monthly record for the award-winning regional airline of 9,000 passengers on that route alone,” said the CEO.

“Passenger figures were also increased due to the introduction of Slattery Sun’s exciting summer routes to Malaga, Faro and Bordeaux and by Aer Arann’s seasonal scheduled service to Lorient in northwest France,” said Graham Doyle.

“We are now enjoying better than ever support from the people of Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Carlow and from further afield as word spreads that Waterford is the hassle-free way to get to the UK and the Continent and we have exciting plans for next year and the coming years to build on the success of 2007” added the CEO.

Chairman of Waterford Airport, Nicky Fewer, said he was pleased to note the ever-increasing passenger levels achieved at Waterford Airport and to thank all those who have used the facility during 2007 and in the past.

“Without our customers we cannot implement our strategic plan to develop this facility as a major part of the regional and national transport infrastructure in line with Government policy to develop Waterford as the Gateway City for the southeast,” said Mr Fewer.

“Waterford Airport has demonstrated that enormous potential exists and the growth curve has been positive in recent years with a total of 81,000 passengers last year, growing to 100,000 so far this year with more than a month still to go,” added the Chairman.

“Preparatory work and planning is progressing well for the recently announced substantial capital development programme to be completed by the end of 2009. A total of €27.7 million is earmarked for expansion and development at the airport, with €22.3 million allocated by the Minister for Transport under the Department of Transport’s Capital Expenditure Grant Scheme.

“The projects funded under Transport 21 will transform Waterford Airport. The runway will be extended and will allow Waterford Airport to tap into the region’s pent up demand for additional scheduled services and charter business,” said Mr Fewer.

What happened to the 146 that FlyU/Nex Aviation was operating for Slatterys Sun from Waterford and Galway this summer? Is it still around?

They're operating out of Copenhagen for the winter months but are due back in Waterford around April/May '08.
G-TBIC is actually on lease to Flightline and it is spending the winter in Aberdeen!

Summer Routes

Amsterdam started this week with reasonable loads from both Galway and Waterford. From what I hear 146 EI-CNQ will operate from Sunday for most of the summer painted in the Aer Arann "rings" scheme. G-TBIC due for C check and some sort of paint job aswell.

Amsterdam and 146 services

Does anyone know how the new 146 operated routes from Waterford and Galway are going, according to plan?

Loads seem to be holding so far anyway, with more than a 70% load factor on most flights. Galway passenger numbers lagging behind Waterford's, but that's nothing new.

I see EI-CNQ entered service during the week, allowed the company to do a rugby charter on Saturday.

EI-CNQ is white with small "Aer Arann operated by Flightline" near the front doors.

Reported by The Irish Independent, 24th July 2008

WATERFORD Airport is building a multi-million euro jet runway that will enable the airport to target Ryanair and Aer Lingus flights from 2010.

The chances of Aer Lingus going into Waterford are somewhere between none and none.

Ryanair might be a more reasonable prospect for London and some of the UK regionals. Aer Arann may not be impressed at building up some of the routes only for the airport to extend the runway for bigger players to set up on them.

Never say never, there is alot of demand for sun destinations out of the South East and Waterford could be covered by a Aer Lingus Dublin aircraft on a "W" rotation.

I would hope that Aer Arann will adapt to the changes, they deserve success out of Waterford. Their product ex Waterford has been generally trouble free.

But why would they do that? It would only damage the very successful sun routes they operate from Cork, and to a lesser extent Dublin. Aer Lingus aircraft can also land at Kerry which is a similiar distance from Cork as Waterford yet EI don't operate there either, presumably since it would only be affecting their Cork base. Even with a longer runway I'd only expect Waterford to have perhaps a Ryanair service to London and a few UK regionals together with a few charter flights to sun spots.

Other than maybe Ryanair the best chance they have would be charter flights like Knock gets at the moment.
Expect LTE,Flightline etc etc .

They are dreaming if they think Aer Lingus will Operate scheduled flights there.

Aer Lingus at Waterford

Why on earth would Aer Lingus even consider Waterford if the runway was extended... given that when they did Birmingham/Knock on a W pattern it was soon scrapped, and Shannon services to anywhere beyond the UK were scrapped (albeit a long time ago) long before Ryanair opened a base there.

In my opinion if Aer Lingus was wanting to look at any type of operation from the regional airports it should have looked at a twice weekly Knock/JFK route. Flyglobespan did well but sadly were allowed to come in and mess the route up good and proper.

Will be great to see Waterford with a longer runway but sadly that wont be good news for Aer Arann.

I remember when Aer Lingus used to do a daily Dublin flight. What's the journey time to drive or take the train to Dublin these days?

There is more chance of the pope changing his religious views than Aer Lingus descending on Waterford. Does anyone know the real cost and who will be paying for this "multi million euro jet runway"? Hope it's not the taxpayer.

The best Waterford can hope for with a new runway is an operation similar to that of Kerry airport. Perhaps Ryanair will operate a few flights in and out of it on short hops but that's about it. Even in Kerry Ryanair operate a relatively small operation with a handful of routes. They may attract some summer charters as they do in City of Derry and Knock for example but that will be about it. Seems an enormous waste of money if you ask me.

Lord Lardy

The funds for this runway were agreed a few years ago when government allocated funds towards regional airports, a few airports including Knock, Kerry, Galway , Sligo and Waterford not sure if any others were included. If I remember this money came from Brussels. Galway Sligo and Waterford said at that time that the runway would be extended.

I would agree with alot you have said, Ryanair would probably make a spectaclar return to Waterford (since they departed on that August day of 92!) and wipe out Aer Arann!

Aer Arann has been good to Waterford but my own personal opinion is that they will be adsorbed by a bigger carrier within the next year, maybe Flybe, so Waterford may need Ryanair in the future. I would expect an operation similar to that at Knock with Ryanair.

I don't see that happening, at least not with BE. The BACON takeover worked synergistically as flybe were already an established leading brand in the UK and BACON had the skilled manpower and slots. In Ireland, south of the border, BE are practically unknown. In the context of availability of credit and the circumstances of the aviation sector at the moment, IF it came to pass that RE were struggling to an extent that they were unviable, I suspect existing carriers would stand back and then cherrypick the routes that work for them.

BIFFO will say no

Currently capital spending projects as planned by the Government are all under review. And somehow I suspect a lenghtened runway in Waterford will be reviewed to the back of a pile.
Berties gone, so BIFFO can reverse on just about any decision he wants.

It'll be interesting to see, does the extra tarmac meet with the old sod.

Cheerio
