A few years ago there was an airline called AV8 who was going to start flights to Africa from NCL but the airline never really got off the ground.
The flights were going to Durban and Port Elizabeth.
The books were good from what i had hear so i do belive that Cape Town could work on a weekly flight

Newcastle-Cape Town non stop in a B767?? Dream on mate. Struggling to get it to Cape Town from Manchester to be honest. I would imagine Canada and New York would be the domain of the B757. Leaving the B767 for longer routes.

I stand corrected....MAD was not on offer fm GLA...dont get carried away here guys...its fun to speculate but as I said HRH King Tom wont do anything that doesnt make money so any speculation based on reasons other than cold hard cash is pointless...suggest anything fm NCL is going to be short lived....I also suspect that LPL-EWR is not going to last...the 757 is not the right a/c for the job. and before we all look towards EOS the point here is economics...the first time the aircraft has a perfomance issue confidence will be lost...also overnight parking at LPL may result in the wheels being nicked and the aircraft ending up on bricks!!

LPL-EWR
The 752 should be the perfect a/c for the route, with ideal airfield performance and no ops issues. What type do you suggest gatwicknose? Also, on what grounds do you qualify your statement that the route will not last. At least now there is an alternative for those in the northwest who do not wish to travel via MAN or struggle to get to LHR.

I think gsm might be running before they can walk, expanding very quickly and in all directions is notoriously difficult in aviation. How many bases will this make in total?. Where will all of the crew come from for the operation, will the maintenance contractors be able to cover it, will they use tsc's etops approval.I do not see as they will be too keen to help out an airline that is allegedlly about to swallow their routes to the uk.

GSM have their own ETOPS approval for the B767. As for the maintenance contractors, who knows. Should have used you guys IMHO. Don't think most of these flights will involve too many more bases, maybe W patterns or dual basing (LPL/MAN, GLA/EDI eg) would cover that. I guess you can only expand too quickly if the market is not there for the product. By all accounts the market does seem to be there, (long may it continue!)
Gatwicknose
What are you talking about? CO operate GLA/EDI-EWR on a B757. US operate ex GLA and EDI on a B757. AA operate ex GLA on a B757. TCX GLA-YYZ B757 None have perf problems. Have you ever operated a B757 or B767?

Several corrections required there.
US do Not operate 757s from EDI- infact they dont operate to EDI at all.
AA do Not operate 757s from GLA. They operate a seasonal 763 service and have done for years.

Stand corrected re US @ EDI. AA have, and occationally do operate B757s from GLA. My point re performance issues, or lack of, stands, wouldn't you agree? The fact that any airline operates the type from any of these airports with no problems shows it can be done.

Mr oh i am certain that you are in a far more professional enviroment right now but i would question the speed of expansion and the almost random choice of bases. I certainly would not wish to see anyone fail and would certainly concede that a good brand can stimulate demand, however walk before run and all that!

What a stooopid thing to say codpiece. Do you REALLLLLY think Dalrymple put the names of all the UK airports into a hat and picked them out at random.....for gods sake, the guy has been in the travel business for over 30 years..
Oh yeah....and you question the speed of expansion....based on what experience?...If you knew ANYTHING about business you would know there is a concept called " first mover advantage" eg starbucks..This is when the company that starts first is more often the one that succeeds by winning the greatest amount of market share in as quick a time possible, creating brand presence and volume. The profits often come at a later stage.

Ice i have been in this business for 18 years if that counts for anything, and i think i am entitled to my own opinion. Running a loco short haul is so different from a longhaul outfit which requires a hell of a lot of extra resource, you stretch that resource to thinly across the world and you could well be asking for trouble.
From the initial comments i wished to court some debate and that i have, albeit a slightly limited but very vocal response. Perhaps you could explain to us, with a business mind of course what will happen when an aircraft is out of action across the world without a backup frame to fill in?.

Sub charter...like most other airlines who don't happen to have the luxury/excess capacity of an aircraft on standby waiting to rescue a tech aircraft. That's called optimising the use of your resources.....another good business point I would say.
Delays through tech aircraft are inevitable in all airlines. As long as the engineering cover and access to spares is adequate, Flyglobespan have as good a chance as anyone else with regard to that issue.

back at you
The advantage that CO/AA etc etc have is the integrated network...all very well for GSM if a few scallies want to go to new york...but with no onward network the route is going to suffer at certain times of the year...The type is also an issue to many people....a narrow body on longhaul is unusual (CO, yes I know) and with Manchester not so far away ofering a wider choice with better connections this route will struggle... I agree on the subject of fast expansion..its not good..with the team King Tom has in place which basically amounts to himself and quite a few yes men and women at senior management level its going to be hard to be operating in so many different directions with differering operational requirements...many well established international carriers find it a nightmare so I see trouble ahead.
