A similar thing happened on the evening of 1st December. At least 5 aircraft were left waiting on taxiway alpha late at night for 3 - 5 hours, perhaps longer, because there were no stands available. In the end, one of them (BMI Regional - an E145 I think) managed to get a stand and the other four had to park on the taxiways; two on the main apron taxiways and two on the south east apron taxiway. Last I heard, the handling agent was refusing to offload the pax and BAA ops were considering commandeering a set of stairs from somewhere to get the pax off. I'm not sure whether the issue was that there is a rule against offloading from taxiways and/or whether it was a health & safety issue because of the amount of snow and ice and/or the fact that the handling agent's staff had gone home for the night.

Yesterday, I was at a lecture on BAA and the environment from Victoria Barby. Amongst other things she made a couple of remarks that could be misinterpreted. These were that she expects it to be Edinburgh that the Competition Comission force BAA to sell and secondly, the airport is not sure whether to go down the low cost route or try and attract full service airlines. In this case she mentioned specificly Emirates. I'm not going to read between the lines and say that EDI are going to poach/attract Emirates from GLA but just simply reporting what she said!

Who operates flights to BHX
Is it just Flybe that operate on the EDI to BHX route now
If so then surely somebody must step in for a bit of healthy competition with fares.
What does anybody else think........????????

Air China?
Just noticed on Uk airport news that Air China are considering flights to China from possibly Edinburgh. If true wiuld be a major coup for EDI.
Also, any further developments regarding Etihad or Qatar to EDI. I believe that whoever plies the route will pull a lot of passengers from GLA/EK. It would also question EK in choosing GLA over EDI ref runway length!!.
Regards 4es

EDI has failed with numerous long haul flights (JFK, Florida, Atlanta) who would have a lot more O+D, and transit passengers than China ever would. Its not going to happen. There was never an issue with EDI runway length. Taxiway loading and general facilties were more likely to be the issue, and with an A320 or A330 this will not be an issue for QR. The connections opportunities ( forming the vast bulk of pax) with QR are not as good as EK.

Edinburgh has hardly 'failed' with JFK (New York) currently 2x daily, nor did it fail with Atlanta.. in fact it did reasonably well with the late mid-day slot allocated - arriving too late in ATL for a lot of connections. In fact EDI has never had a regular Florida flight to deserve 'failed'. The flights it did have were doubled-up at GLA for operational reasons. Whose to say if they doubled-up at EDI they wouldn't be even more successful given EDI's
Scottish geographical position.? And whose to say that any long haul currently
operated exclusively from GLA would not outperform if exclusive to EDI?

Strong rumours of QR daily starting later in the year. Not sure if it'd be A319 or A330.
As for Air China, I know the recent diplomatic visit went well and all that, but I think that'd be a step too far at this stage!

Ah an unsurprising response.... Your blinkered commitment to EDI is unquestionable....
There are no flights to JFK , they were stopped because they werent successful and passengers stuck with the service to EWR, so in my book thats a fail. The CO to EWR was never in question. Atlanta was tried and loads and presumably profits were variable and obviously not justifiable as airlines dont tend to drop money spinning routes even peak summer. Your reason re connection times is your presumption. In my book tried, and failed. There have been a number of operators to Florida from EDI and they have lasted no more than a season. Again "doubled up at GLA" is your presumption. Do you really think airlines are fools and ignore demand ?
QR maybe. China, never.

Can you name the number of airlines that have tried EDI/Florida?
European had a short season a few years ago, Globespan were due to start but went bust before any flights operated, I am unaware of any others , charter or otherwise.
EDI/Florida must be must be a huge untapped market.

So the 'fail' you award isn't down to EDI demand, it's down to the airport owner.?
