Now look guys, don't give MA management a hard time! They can't help it making ****e decision after ****e decision, as they don't seem to any cohesive brain function between them at all.
It's always " Lets do it on the cheapest possible basis, and not consider passenger needs for smooth uncomplicated check-in and security searches, but we'll spend lots making sure we can relieve them of their cash at the retail outlets".
I think they should also consider the following:-
Have multiple retail outlets on the Mezzanine level, so you could shop whilst you queue for security. The queing system could actually be made to go from shop to shop, and then you'd have no heavy bags to carry up the stairs to get to security in the first place.
See how many empty cargo units there are in the freight village and put some check-in desks in them. Pax will only have a short walk down the road to the terminal of their choice.
During the hours the MSF hut isn't being used, ie during darkness ( long winter nights are approaching), add more check-in desks.
Have variable terminal check-in with large matrix signs on all approach roads directing pax to the terminal with the most spare check-in at the time and then let them walk to their the gate regardless of terminal.
However before I get too carried away, these ideas are probably already being considered by MA mismanagement. Long may it continue though, as Peel holdings and others would have nothing to laugh about if they were to stop. No wonder airlines like BMi would sooner run out of LHR etc, when you see the no-spared expense of T5! Remember there are no more runway slots at Heathrow, just better facilities being built for the Pax and the airlines, and that makes me

1) Airport managers around the world are having to deal with the constant erosion of aeronautical income streams. As a result every airport must maximise non aeronautical revenue through shops (rent) etc and if this means making terminals into shopping malls then so be it because in essence thats all they are.
2) You made a reference (indirectly albeit) to check in desks being situated in the station..... if people are informed of exactly where they should check in (as a travel agent i always did this) then checking in at the station is minimal fuss. (just get dropped off at the station)
3) Extra check in desks at terminal 2 will no doubt leave many out of use during the winter. However, many are left empty during the summer afternoons anyway and in winter, T2 is still very busy during the morning. I dare say they are actually doing this to encourage carriers (that many on this forum so desperately want to see) to operate from MAN
4) BD are not benfitting from T5.

It's understandable that an airport has to make profit where it can, the bemusement people feel at MAN is that within the span of a decade or so it's gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.
T2 and the Skywalk are great, T3 is pretty good too..., then we get check-in at the Station. OK no logistical argument against it, but it's just nasty and cheap and passengers take the p*^s out of it.
Agree about LHR T5, now that is a serious project....

"Travel5Live, a new Manchester-based operator established by former Sabre Airways - now Excel Airways - founder and director Jim Wyatt, plans a South Africa programme.
Former CT2 chief executive Brian Murfin, who has been acting as a consultant to the company for the past three months, has acquired 37.5% shareholding.
Murfin has been working with Travel5Live on a start-up South Africa holiday progromma which is expected to go on sale via the trade in October. The operator plans to offer the only direct charter flights from Gatwick and Manchester to Cape Town for the winter 2006-07......"

Thomsonfly High Frequency Schedules
Thomsonfly has today announced new "high frequency scheduled services" ex-MAN to AGP, ALC, PMI and IBZ effective Spring 2006. UK bases for Thomsonfly scheduled services will rise from 3 to 11 airports; MAN is one of eight new departure points. The Thomsonfly fleet is set to rise from 43 to 48 aircraft to accommodate the changes.
Clearly, the fleet figure quoted includes both the traditional 'charter' fleet and the no-frills B737's. With this in mind, can anybody advise whether the MAN scheduled services are set to be operated by the B737's or with familiar B752/B762/B763 equipment? The Thomsonfly website carries a presentation on the changes but is quite generalised in content. The MAN services do not yet appear to be bookable on the website. Any specific details of frequencies and days of operation would be appreciated.

MAN enjoyed a record flying day last Friday (9th September). A total of 818 aircraft movements used the two runways midnight-midnight. This is the busiest day in the airport's history with the exception of 28th May 2003 when many additional charter flights operated for the European Champions League final. Friday is normally the busiest day of the week, and there have been several 800+ movement Fridays this Summer. MAN is moving metal at a fair rate these days, the investment in a second runway starting to pay back. The 1000 movement day may be less than 5 years away.

Don't knock 'Mediterranean Tediousness', Mr. Vuelo! It's the bread and butter which keeps many of us gainfully employed. Nice destinations for a chill-out visit too ... why not cheer yourself up with a trip away? Not tedious at all?
