XLA don't have the POP and SFB next year. The contract has been signed but recent events have prompted XL to pull out of long haul routes altogether from next year. Apparently all the 763 aircraft will be MAn/LGW based and will do the short haul routes freeing up the 2 X -800 for NCL.
This is very new news from a first hand source within the airline. They seem to have acknowledged the problems they have in long haul which is surely a good thing for the long suffering pax. TCX are receiving another A330 in November which may do the routes or they are also in discussion with Monarch about a 3 day rotation at NCL

STARAVIATION :- I really can not believe that you have a problem with the negative press, on the basis of a great deal of Excel's (longhaul at least) services, such criticism is thoroughly deserved. It's NOT just the technical side, that suggests that some flights are approaching downright dangerous, but also the conditions and the way that the passengers are treated.
Lets face it, Excel fly old clapped out 767's with a seat pitch to suit midgets, and IFE which is at best a joke & at worst non existent.
The airline is under resourced (or fully stretched) in terms of equipment. The staff's ability to handle and communicate to those that are inconvenienced by the inevitable delays is also "not good". That they may be pulling out of longhaul, then bl**dy brilliant!, but then this is probably just before they are forced to by being dropped by tour operators. It's probably also the best way forward to consolidate what they have left of a short haul operation.

Interested to read the various replies. I'm pleased to see that Excel seems to be taking the problems onboard, especially if they withdraw from longhaul and replace the 737-400's with 800's next year.
My main worry is that with such a bad press for Excel longhaul that passengers would be loath to spend money on such flights in 2006 if they can't be assured by the tour operators of a better holiday than some are having to endure this year. It really is putting the airports long-haul charter plans at risk when the press is full of "epic delay and poor pax treatment" stories.
By the way, what is happening to the Helios flights, are they still using their own aircraft or wet-leasing?

Flybe has announced that Newcastle had the largest year on year increase in pax for August of any of the airports it serves.
The increase was 143%. see www.flybe.co.uk
What more encouragement do they need to open more routes next year?
This must also encourage other airlines to introduce routes from Newcastle

I do hope Flybe do offer some expansion at NCL.
Possible good routes:
Norwich
Bordeaux
Toulouse
Limoges
Bergerac
Aberdeen (Competition for Eastern!)
Birmingham (Competition for Eastern!)
Could Jersey support a daily service - I think it could!!!

According to today's TTG Excel will not be operating the long haul flights from Newcastle next year, so I wonder who will? They are still listed with Thomas Cook on the res system at the moment.

So as from next summer does this mean an extra aircraft from easyjet, making 7 in total? What other destinations in the pipeline, perhaps Madrid or Valencia, Venice or Naples?
what other new routes in the pipeline?
It is going to be another very busy summer at NCL!!!!
GrahamK where did you find out that Thomson SFB flights are to be operated by MON? Yes the sat flight will be but seats are still being sold on XLA, even though they won't be operating it.

Personally, I think Madrid would be a good option for EZY. This part of Spain is not currently served directly from anywhere in the North East or Yorkshire so they would have a wide catchment area for the route.

Easyjet now have to second guess Jet2 for lo-cost routes next summer. I think this may have prompted the quick announcement on Faro (which may have been on Jet2's list of possibles).
Another daily route for next summer which must mean a/c No.7
