I think a quote from JP a few days ago hit the nail on the head "the airport has reached a critical mass that could attract a transatlantic service"
That's not necessarily the 2 million + low cost pax's but the hundred of thousand pax's that interline via LHR/AMS/CDG etc.
Not to mention the large amount of pax's who drive to MAN/EDI/GLA!

I think that the medication that some are taking maybe too strong. It's not the number of people at an airport which determines how far aircraft fly, but the amount of runway available for aircraft to use. With shade over 2,300 metres, NCL IS NOT LONG ENOUGH! That's why people HAVE to drive to EDI/GLA/MAN. If the £10 million that was recently spend on shops was invested in a longer runway, then maybe services would already be operating to these more distant places. Another 300 to 400 meteres needs to be added to the runway and that must be added to the eastern end (otherwise there will be no gain). And if Darlington Municipal Aerodrome adds their's first then maybe people will have to drive to MME to go long haul!

New logos, PR, glossy brochures, shops, swish parking and a few bars does nothing for aircraft performance.

Those A330s and 767s that fly to Florida nonstop must be magic a/c then

Graham, I don't think you fly aeroplanes for living! Yes, you can get a 767 or a 330 out of NCL, but it's TODA restricts the payload/fuel. This, therefore will increase the costs to the operator and, not surprisingly, it's fares to cover the possibility of a tech stop. Just like in the movies "Built it and they will come". Unless of course, NCL uses revenues from its shorter haul operators to subsidise the long haul operators - hardly fair!

The problems with take-off performance only really occur in bad weather conditions with runway 25 because of the high ground to the west of the runway. There will be a runway extension to the east in about 4-7 years time, but it will take that long for the plans to go through consultation etc.

Boys, I would be the first to say we need a longer runway, and have been saying so ever since I came back here fifteen years ago.
However unless the airport got some sort of aid, gov or European, its not going to happen soon. The last costing put it at around one million pounds per metre extended! Because of the road and relocation of the Cat III ILS etc.
However the present runway is long enough for Eastern sea board and Middle East flights so we struggle on. I have done long haul fam flights out of NCL and it depends on the crews and the a/c what problems the runways gives. The 330 is mostly fine but 763's can struggle. MYT for a lot of years had problems with 25 even for the 320's however when we got to the bottom of it there ops manual was more to blame than the runway!
As for the present possibility of transatlantic flights - well I think if the runway was not long enough then the airlines wouldn't have even looked at us would they?

I think that the airport needs to look at getting some more ramps to start of with. An extention of immigration would also be useful. Last year the airbus from Toronto and a load of European flights arrived at the same time and it was chaos down there. Another airbridge would also be useful.

i was on the ryanair milan flight on tuesday....it was full load and returned on friday....a little bit lighter but still looking good...come on ryanair....give us some more choice to dublin and the rest of europe

I think FR do plan a North East base but are going to play NCL and MME off against each other for a while first.

Personally, I think they should choose NCL - more because of the potential for inbound tourism as well as outbound. If they pick their routes cleverly I think they will be immensely successful. I would hope for routes to Frankfurt Hahn, Oslo, Stockholm, Venice Treviso, Murcia, Shannon, Limoges and maybe Malmo but we will have to wait and see!!

Just read the announcement of a/c no.6 for Bristol for new routes to Inverness/Murcia and Pisa.

Maybe our No.7 will not be far behind now.

The destinations are interesting, Pisa and Murcia being new on the Easyjet network.

I think you'll find it's number 8, not 6. Already have 7.

Malta Bargains and associated airline BritishJet are launching flights from NCL to MLA using MD90 of swiss carrier Hello. Flights operate on fridays departing 1240.

Another new service from NCL, it will operate all year round.
