It's refreshing to see your optimism about Derry airport Carnmanorlad.
There is no reason why Derry airport should not have a route to Paris.
Derry and Limerick are similar sized cities and Aer Lingus operates an A320 on the Shannon to Paris route.
Knock airport has a lot less population in it's hinterland than Derry airport yet it is far more successful with a lot more routes.
Derry airport has a lot of potential, it is the only decent sized airport in the northwest of Ireland. Once the recession passes and oil prices don't go through the roof, Derry airport will be able to reach its potential.

Guys was just booking a mate on the same LDY-TFS flight as myself in May when i looked at the flight times indepth.

Departs LDY@1110
Arrives TFS@1545
Flight Time = 3.35hrs

Departs TFS@0615
Arrives LDY@1045
Flight Time = 5.5hrs

How is it 5.5hrs on the inbound flight, I have accounted for the 1hr time difference?

The Canary Islands are in the same time zone of Ireland, UK, Portugal so times wont change.

Inbound flights is 4 Hours 30 Minutes.
Outbound flights is 4 Hours 35 Minutes.

There is often a much larger discrepency between outbound and inbound due to head/tail winds sometimes more than 30 mins. The block time will also be longer.

So the MTV Europe Music Awards are being held in Belfast on 6th Nov. Will BFS & BHD be able to handle all the traffic or will LDY be used as a viable alternative?

Knock has a shrine which attracts a lot of 'customers' from all over europe.

Indeed, Knock airport was built for the Pope's visit in the 70's

Derry has......a few walls and, well and eh......

Yet Derry beat Birmingham (BHX?) to the City of Culture award.

Nice shopping centre and train station in the centre of Brum.....well, nice shopping centre!

Anyway, Carnmanorlad, there's plenty of room at BFS, so I doubt LDY would need to take any overflow.

Actually Knock was built in the 80's, long after the pope had been and gone. And I'd imagine shrine visitors represent a very small percentage of pax numbers (the airport isn't actually that near to Knock shrine at all).

What Knock has that Derry does not is a population base in all directions from the airport, as it is well inland. It is also situated near the junction of two national primary routes. Part of the reason that Derry serves fewer routes is because half it's 'catchment area' is sea. If CODA was situated half way down the road to Omagh it would actually be far more successful than it currently is.

The definition of the catchment area for something like an airport is:

the area and population from which a facility or region attracts visitors or customers

Now, the last time I flew into Derry I didn't see many people living on Lough Foyle, but there you go.

LDY has a city of over 100,000 people seven miles away, and a town of over 24,000 and several with populations over 10,000 within 20 miles.

Imagine how busy NOC would be if it had local urban areas like that.

As an aside, and slightly off topic, what impact, if any, will the completed M6 have on NOC? Dublin in a few hours?

I ask as the infrastructure in the NW is slowly improving with new dual carriageways either recently completed, or in the (very long) pipeline.

M6 - no real impact to be honest. It's too far away from the airport. In time, if the M17 is ever built to Tuam that could have an impact in bringing Galway City more into the airport's range, but it would also make SNN more accessible to users of NOC. So potentially both positive and negative I suppose.

Would be nice to have a big city next to Knock but there isn't one so Knock survives by being central to a wide geographical area of around half a million people who are quite spread out, rather than one focus city like a lot of other airports.

Flying home on the Stansted flight today! Looking forward to seeing the terminal!

On a side note, seen the line improvements between Derry and Coleraine should start in 2014 after complaints around the line being closed in 2013 arose.

MAN connections

Depending on the timetable LDY-MAN has the potential for connecting to the USA and Gulf through MAN as an alternative to using BFS or DUB as a starting point.

More good news for the airport:

BBC News - Numbers up at Derry Airport

I'll do my usual analysis around mid-month when the CAA stats come out.

Flew back from Derry today... terminal looks great. The new border control area looks really fresh and professional. Also the WHSmith seems to be having people in and out non-stop. The Airport Shop looked a bit quieter but the woman with the red hair in there was really attentive at trying to get sales through. Seen someone buy perfume and another man go mad at the Irish Souvenirs stand. So good to see people are spending in there!

Also noticed that the new stands outside the terminal have space for at least 4 B737's.

Yeah, the departures lounge looks much better now. Anytime I've been through, all the retail options have been very busy, especially WH Smith. All needs to be done now (and seemingly it's on the agenda) is sorting out the security area.

Indeed. There's plenty of space now at the airport. I wonder if CODA management have developed that much apron space speculatively, or is it in anticipation of an airline actually opening a base?

No doubt time will tell.

There is a DUB-LDY flight, at the usual time, but there is no LDY-DUB at 19.45 listed in the booking engine. So, either the DUB-LDY flight is night-stopping, there is a error in the booking engine, or, and less likely, the flight is sold out.
