I remember when the Bristol route was dropped. There was very little publicity about it, it just quietly disappeared off the Ryanair website and Radio Foyle subsequently obtained a statement from Ryanair and the City Council and airport seemed to be in the dark as usual.
This is just like what is going on with the Alicante route. Well except this time Ryanair don't seem to know what is going on either.

I just seen this mentioned on an other thread... why isn't City of Derry on this! The Route Shop | New routes required by airports | The online route supermarket
Management at Derry need to take advantage of every opportunity.

Northern, I think that when most airlines realise that RYR are the dominant operator out of LDY, and then see the catchment area, they probably cool their interest in the place. How could they compete should RYR decide to go head to head?
I do however agree that CODA management should be doing their very best to increase offer from Derry (and who knows? Maybe they are!).
I'm amazed there isn't more IT interest in the place, especially after the runway extension was completed.

Hmmmm. Perhaps it's time for RYR to leave Derry, and let an operator such as Flybe make a go of the place.
How many people will have booked accommodation, on the assumption they're arriving on the Monday flight, only now to be screwed?

Looks like a tough year ahead now for Derry with only Ryanair operating scheduled flights to the airport after July. I can only find one arrival and one departure (Stansted) on a Tuesday from August onwards - is this correct? Of course Tuesday tends to be the quietest day at most airports but its a fair distance to Belfast from Derry, surely there is scope for more services than this?

Meh... we seen the Dublin axe coming. And at least the Faro route is still there! Thing is, I wonder had Aer Arran been able to sustain the badly planned and scheduled routes to Manchester and Edinburgh, would we have seen these being axed too?
If Aer Arran was smart, they would move an aircraft to Derry and go to Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol but less frequently as previously proposed. But hey, when does Aer Arran ever make a smart move?
Come on Flybe, you must do Derry is there for the picking. And I don't think Ryanair would try to compete directly with them on certain routes as they'd loose more money that Flybe would.

Derry Airport would like Aer Arann to operate the Dublin route on a commercial basis. Can't see it happoning myself.
Airport hopes to retain 20-year-old Dublin service - Londonderry Today
Regarding to FR ALC:
Ryanair still loading schedule - Londonderry Today

Though highly disappointing that the route is likely to be dropped, the LDY-BHX route carries more pax in a week than the LDY-DUB currently does in a month. I can't see any operator seeing it as viable. It averages 10 pax/flight, so how it's essential for NW tourism and business travellers is beyond me. Add to that the fact RE are seemingly finding it impossible to operate the current schedule without significant delays or cancellations, then one wonders about any realistic future of the route.
As for Derry to Alicante........what a total and utter cock-up.

4th January 2011: Radio Foyle informed by Ryanair that route will continue
6th January 2011: Passenger informed by City of Derry Airport that route is discontinued
12th January 2011: Londonderry Sentinel again informed by Ryanair that route will continue
Present: Unbookable.
Well it doesn't get any more exciting than that. Places your bets . . . . . .

The Airport Manager, Damien Tierney said the airport will be liaising with the current carrier, Aer Arann and other commercial providers, to discuss the future of the route.
Yeah, they always say that. Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, bla bla bla

The only way the DUB service is staying, is if RE try the MAN and EDI services and are forced to position an aircraft in from DUB in the morning and back at night. So thats 99.999% unlikely of course knowing our luck.
The ALC situation really is an almighty balls up. Hope it gets sorted soon or replaced with another route.
Bleak times ahead it seems for the summer schedule with RE going, RYR doing their usual culling of rotations on certain routes and Balkan gone after one year, is there anything to smile about?
Where art thou Flybe?

I flew into Derry earlier today from STN (good crowd on board). The place does look like a proper little airport now, and deserves better than the recent announcements.
DUB will go TFN, and I'd be very (pleasantly) surprised if RYR operate Alicante this year, despite the apparent bluster about it taking months and months and moooooonnnnnnttthhhhhs to load timetables.
Realistically however, the only airline who could make a go of further domestic routes would be one operating smaller aircraft. Aer Arann have been descending into a bit of a disaster recently, but bizarrely the Aer Lingus Regional that they operate on EI's behalf seems to be doing ok. So, realistically, places like EDI, MAN and BRS would be best suited with EI-Regional, or BE. A second LON flight could easily support an EZY (in the absence of a return to double-daily RYR). There are opportunities, but will any airline be brave enough to have a go, and can LDY management persuade them to do so?
On a completely separate note, I noticed whilst waiting for my lift, departures to Newcastle at 00.10 and Birmingham at 02.00 later tonight/tomorrow morning. Gonna be a late night for the ops staff at LDY (if these do actually go ahead). Anyone got any idea what they are, and also, is this the first time at Derry that flights have been scheduled to leave after midnight?

Anyway there is a rumour, and I stress only a rumour as the person who told me would not reveal their source but were quite insistent, that Ryanair will operate to ALC this summer but only during July and August.
(Even once a week during July and August would probably suffice for most needs, but would it make commercial sense: such a short season with first and last flights empty?)
If it turns out to be true, well you heard it here first, and if it turns out to be a load of crap, I will say well I was only reporting a rumour.
And of course this is the rumour network.
