NC< I reckon with the weather behaving itself, there will be a slight increase in numbers. Anecdotally, from travelling through the airport in Jan, it does "feel" busier!

Anyway, we'll find out around the 14th Feb.

I heard the Nolan show on the radio this morning (rubbish! - bring back Radio Foyle's Sarah Brett show) and they were talking about passengers with colostomy bags, etc, being searched without adequate privacy.

Does City of Derry have a private search area? I've never seen it and the airport seems a little small though they definitely should have one if they don't.

Man-alc & Huy -alc

Just when I was about to give up all hope for LDY-ALC I see that ALC flights are still being loaded. Manchester and Humberside got new Alicante routes this week.

OK, LDY-ALC would not be new but perhaps they're still fiddling with the ALC timetable.

I mean at what stage do we declare that Ryanair's pronouncements on LDY-ALC running this summer were just hot air given the unbookability of the flight.

Thankfully the weather is behaving CU! And I wouldn't be surprised if it does feel buzzing... I've been itching to use the airport to see the improvements but the flight times never seem to suit whilst I live in London this year. I am moving back to Birmingham come August, so I'll begin using the airport again and bolstering the passenger numbers! Also bring 4 friends back in September so I'll be doing my bit to help numbers.

Amelia - although it's easy for me to say this as I didn't use the Alicante route, I would rather they introduce a second London flight as opposed to reintroducing the Alicante route.

I can't wait for 2013 though cause that's going to be a bumper year for the airport if the airlines help. I think it would make great sense to introduce new routes now, get a bit of hype around them this year. As usual the hype would wain a bit in the second year, but then get them boosted again in the third!

CODA could then think about opening a Burger King or something like a Costa to get further income and reduce landing fees. But that's just getting ahead of myself aint it!

I look forward to the fruits of your labour in mid Febuary CU!

NC, with reference 2013, I don't know if you've seen the news coverage, but both McGuinness and Robinson are championing Derry to be the first city outside of the South to hold the All Ireland Fleadh. This generally brings in about 250,000 visitors, from all over the world. This would obviously benefit all three NI airports. Add to that the Turner Prize, and also the Round the World Clipper Race, and the number of potential visitors to the city rises to 500,000. If we estimate that 300,00 of these are from outside NI, then there's a serious upturn in visitor numbers.

With more events in the pipeline, and the general interest that UK City of Culture will bring, then it seems only natural that airlines will be looking at this as a driver for expansion, not just for LDY, but for BFS and BHD also.

Amelia; if Derry to Alicante hasn't appeared by the end of March, then I'd give up on it.

Cheers!

Derry ~ Londonderry UK City of Culture will fall flat on its face due to lack of funding.

The Northern Ireland assembly have no interest in the thing because it's not Belfast and have already refused to provide even a modest amount of funding (Ł5 million). Derry City council (owners of City of Derry airport - nice tie into this thread) cannot afford to fund it.

If Belfast ever gets it, the rate-payers of Northern Ireland will be expected to cought up Ł50 million. That's how this stinking country is run.

CU, I did see the reports... and it's great that Peter Robinsons backing it as well. I'll be very surprised if Feadh doesn't come to the City. I think we can take it for certain it will. There will definately need to be additional flights for the Turner Prize and Brit Awards (Although I'm as yet to be convinced where they can be held). I'm sure we'll see a lot of private jets landing around those events too!

Amelia, ever the optimist as always. It won't fall flat it's face... I don't know where you come up with these things. For god sake people were claiming that the Nationalist controlled DRD was being secterian to Derry having the rail line closed at the start of 2013 to April. When in fact it had be planned for years... it now has been postponed because of the whingers though.

Local businesses have already pledges Ł70 million in local investment getting there small shops, cafes and hotels/lodgings done up for it. And the Brit Awards and Turner Prize pay their own way. And contribute loads to the local economy. I will remind you come January 2014, of what you said regarding City of Culture. And refer to the improved passenger numbers too.

All we have to do now is wait... and hope that Flybe get their act together!

NC, spot on. There's too much of this poor us sh%te from apologists in Derry.

City of Culture is a brilliant opportunity for Derry. At NO point in the process was public money ever promised. There has however been tens of millions promised from the private sector (including the building, or refurbishment of, five hotels, and that's in the first year!). If the City of Culture was stopped now, early in 2011, we could still guarantee anything up to 200,000 visitors as described above for 2013.

Even if the Brit Awards are held in Belfast, some kind of link up with Derry would be essential. This is before the opening of a new maritime museum, the footbridge, and other developments.

Derry's been on its ar$e long enough, so it's about time Amelia and all her friends started taking pride in their city, stopped blaming Stormont (where's that got the city in the last 50 years?) and got it together. Support your city, do something useful for it, and stop looking for excuses elsewhere.

I'm sure Amelia encourages her family and friends to fly from LDY to all available destinations and supports the airport as much as possible. (and God forbid Alicante goes! It may lead to a boycott!)

Whether some people like it or not (and some are much noisier and explosive in their resistance than others) City of Culture is going to happen, will be beneficial for the city, and will invariably bring in new business for the airport.

Bring it on.

Perhaps one has to leave Derry to see what a great place it is. Ex-pat disease?

I am partial a bit to "ex-pat disease" and I do love coming home and seeing what's changed! And the thing is, it does keep changing. Derry's seen so much investment and money promised to it in this recession. As you mentioned the Footbridge, and along with the Maydown dual carriageway extension, and the Dublin and Belfast road improvements on the way in the next 5 years.

We in Derry like to claim that we're a passionate people, but all I see generally is a whole lot of talking, and not a lot of doing. An example would be people having one of the best education systems in the world, getting worth while degrees and yet fear going out into the big bad world. Instead content in taking a role at Firstsource. (Don't get me wrong, a jobs a job but some people could do so much better and we are lucky for Firstsource's presence!)

We have been very lucky in recent times and Ilex in my view are doing/trying to do a great job along with Valerie Watts and the gang at the council. Yet we have some trying to undo the hard work with the rhetoric from the past. Thankfully I only see what ever minuscule support they have diminishing.

Anyway... just wanted to leave you all with this... I've seen it before but it gets me everytime!

It looks like ALC is a no go. If they knew it was returning for this summer they would have most likely added it whilst they were adding MAN and HUY to the menu. Hopefully the same doesn't happen to FAO next year. In other news Aer Arann are pulling the ATR's off the evening DUB flight and will be using a Dornier 328 until the end of the PSO.

Hi Speedbird, where did they get the Dornier from? I wasn't aware they owned/leased one.

I think if Ryanair doesn't change anything, Alicante-Derry will be out of the operational program. I have checked the ALC schedules recently and they have 3 slots to put some flights (one on Tuesday and Thursday morning and one on Wednesday afternoon).

I hope to see the route soon again...

Best regards

Just a random question, has CODA done anything to combat poor visibility diversions? What kind of system, if any does CODA have?

Northern, LDY has CAT 1 ILS systems at both ends of the runway. These are obviously better than the NDB DME procedures also available, but not as good as as the CAT III ILS that allows autoland functionality at BFS.

Both the ILS systems at LDY are brand new, with the 08 Offset ILS going into force just last week, so it is highly unlikely they will be upgrading anytime soon.
If the visibility is right down to near zero, there is very little that most airports can do.

Talking

I think you'll all find this interesting:
Ryanair boss urged to expand City of Derry Airport service
Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has been urged to investigate expanding his airline’s operations at City of Derry airport.

Derry tour operator Martin McCrossan made the case for the city’s airport during a meeting with the airline mogul in Dublin last Friday.
Mr McCrossan appealed to the business tycoon to explore the “great opportunities” available at City of Derry airport as a gateway to the North West region of Ireland.
“I pressed on the importance of continuing to promote Derry and get more flights to and from the city,” said the local tour operator.
“I emphasised the great opportunities potentially available for Ryanair to bring more European routes to Northern Ireland.
“He was very positive about Derry and the future of the airport,” Mr McCrossan added.
Low cost carrier Ryanair is the main airline operating out of City of Derry Airport.
The airline currently operates services to Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and Stansted from the city.

I think Martin deserves a thank you from the people of Derry and Northern Ireland as a whole. He makes great efforts to improve tourism growth, and only last year spent a week in New York promoting the Island!

It was a second hand quote. Does anyone really believe (a) he actually said that and (b) if he did, it actually means anything?
