There is no aircraft availability problems for such a sector length as BHX-LDY. The Q400 utilisation at BHX this summer is at best leisurely at times.
flybe have/are closing 9 routes at BHX over the next two days and will lose just one operational aircraft from the base for a few months. They will have several aircraft sitting on the deck for several hours from mid-morning to mid afternoon.
In theory LDY could have started any time from Monday onwards until the end of the summer season and the only other unknown factor is crew availability and on the Q400 I would doubt that is a factor.

All sounds great, be interesting to see what really happens.
The Derry Dublin flight has been tried a couple of times before and failed as soon as the government funding (North & South) stopped so I doubt it will be any more successful this time round.
There is an increasing unease among the additional rate payers as a result of the council merges which may partially account for the timing of these latest announcements. Not that I am cynical or anything.

Not optimistic about the Dublin service.
For business travellers, versus the journey by road there's at least an hour to 90 mins* lost for check-in and security at the airport, plus the time taken on the bus from Dublin Airport into the city.
So there's just over two hours plus the actual flight block time versus 3.5 to 4 hours for the coach straight into Busaras without hassles.
For connecting passengers, hauling their holiday luggage onto an L410 will be challenging + expensive.
* Derry Airport recommend two hours but that's a bit extreme. Manx2 close the gate 25 mins before departure.

To be honest, my betting on it would be CityWing offering a re-boot of the DUB-BLK route as a stage/complementary route to LDY now that they are resuming ops, then again, anything's possible.
From a spotter's point of view, it'd be quite interesting to see a Let 410 in DUB.

There are no days when a second departure to London is permanently scheduled in the Summer timetable.
On occasion 614 ( RYR92YP ) has operated in the afternoon to supplement the earlier 612 ( RYR94GA ), but I don't know the reasons / factors that cause that.
It happened on the 7th, 8th ( Sunday ) and all Fridays in March, for example. But that was Winter timetable.

Alicante flights now extended into June while previously only being July. Flights weekly on Wednesdays only.
Doesn't seem to be the same for Faro.
Pity it's been extended to June and not August but better than nothing.

Watching an usual outbound path taken by the Liverpool flight today.
Took of in Limavady direction and turned right as normal over Ballykelly to go across NI towards Belfast.
However, it then turned left at Limavady, went up past Coleraine to Portrush and turned right again and down over the East side of NI to Belfast and Irish Sea.
Very unusual, no storm clouds etc on the weather radar.
Anyone know what was going on there?

Re the Dublin and Birmingham routes, these where dependant on getting assistance from Regional Air Connectivity Fund
No confirmation yet but other sites saying that this fund may have been cut back or even scrapped as part of government spending cuts, anyone else hear anything?
Indeed current government page points out that this is a previous government idea.

There probably is a bigger market for sun routes. That market tends to go to Belfast or Dublin. It is difficult to get additional routes or services on existing routes, as the airport is competing with other airports for Ryanair's attention. It is a hard sell.
Same goes for flying to London, it is not a case of how the route is doing, but more is to say what is the airport that the locals are using. Take the weekend break to London, the timings are not great, come back early enough on Sunday or 0655am on Monday. The customer is spoiled for choice ex other airports, so getting a flight in is only one step in the journey, the timings and frequency are another.....

Will they ever close LDY??
Since 2012 numbers at LDY have steadily dropped, 405K in 2012, 385K in 2013, 352K in 2014 and probably 290K in 2015. (Currently 12 months rolling is showing 325K) Since CAA stats count pax in and out this will be less than 150,000 pax with return tickets this year.
Although it's a pain driving to BFS/BHD or even more so to DUB can the airport survive on a little more than two flights per day?
Views/ options welcome

I suppose the loss of Thomson was a fairly big hit to the airport. I'd imagine it would be Competing with Donegal to an extent too. The population of Derry and regions around are not that low, I'd imagine similar to or better than Knock, yet Knock is doing alot better.
