This is KQ's press release clarifying the actual events:
Kenya Airways | Facebook
"Kenya Airways would like to issue this clarification following reports in sections of the media that one of our flights to Mombasa on June 13th 2012 was forced to return to bay at the JKIA after taxing to the runway because the crew had allegedly forgotten to fuel the aircraft. This was not the case; the following is the chronology of events and circumstances that prompted the recalling of the aircraft to bay:
• Kenya Airways Flight 610 to Mombasa on June 13th 2012 had to return to the parking bay after taxing to the runway occasioned by the discovery of two unaccompanied bags on the aircraft.
• The passenger, whose bags were in question, had checked in but failed to board the aircraft.
• Given the prevailing global security concerns, Kenya Airways does not fly unaccompanied baggage.
• While on the parking bay after offloading the two bags, as per the procedure, the captain called to top up fuel as some of it had been used during taxing to the runway and returning to the bay; this is the normal procedure on any turn back situation.
• The passengers were informed of the fuel top up and requested to unbuckle their seat belts as per the Airline safety requirements.
• The Flight departed Nairobi at 1530hrs and arrived in Mombasa at 1630hrs.
We wish to point out that Kenya Airways upholds the highest standards in all operations and our ground handling crew adhere to all procedures relating to the servicing and preparations of aircrafts before departure."

@Lamyna flo, you are not a pilot, if you were you should know better,
one of the requirements before even boarding a plane is having the necessary fuel requirements and oils on board, the fuel check is also part of the before start checks in KQ procedures, so either you are looking to malign an institution you know nothing about or just another MFS pilot on here looking for sensationalist stories

@Odericko, a bit harsh there, think Flo is just looking to see if there is another angle from within the comunity!
Security 101 will tell you not to move without reconciling a bag to a pax unless it is correctly handled as unaccompanied (Which KQ says it doesn't carry!), the plane should not have closed the doors let alone taxi before resolving that issue!
Good that the system, which ever variant it was stopped the plane getting airborne, guess they need to include a head count now perhaps
I suspect that Flo will answer you shortly however

@Rat catcher, do you as the Captain normally go down and personally confirm that each bag is matched to the owner, or you confirm that the load sheet numbers tally with the numbers onboard, if there is a LMC and a pax is offloaded, you rely on your ground staff and Kilo 1, to do the necessary and remove the bags of the pax who is now not travelling, and they provide you with the necessary evidence that either the pax had checked in baggage or not, unfortunately in this part of the world where integrity is in short supply, yes i will be the first to acknowledge it, more often than not the ground staff will be quick to disclaim that the offloaded pax had no checked in baggage and even provide you with the required documentation, since they have learnt to beat the system all this in a bid to get an on time departure.
That is now another issue altogether, my bane is the fact that people are so quick to chastise the pilots without learning the facts, whilst all they did was follow the laid down procedures for LMC.
The Airline is in the process of changing its check in system to Altea because of such issues.

What's a "Top Up"?
Curiously the only thing missing from the KQ press release is the amount of fuel required for the "Top Up".
Surely it occured to the Spin Doctors in the PR department that some people may have beleived the outrageous story oweing to concerns regarding Airline Operations here on this continent....

As for your skills, experience and knowledge as a Captain, I know them well and, therefore, unlike a certain poster, won't be bringing them into question.
Funny how certain, um, types have to bring just about everything down to personal level, hey?

Anyone have anything more on this whoopsie?
@ Lamyna flo, that statement already insinuated that the link is factual, you weren't trying to find the veracity of the link, rather more info on why the pilots "left the bay without enough fuel", and you thinking you can judge me or my abilities by posts on here, you got another thing coming.

Está servira para distraerle.
Doesn't the Energy Regulating Commission (ERC) set the different fuel prices for various locations throughout Kenya?
Isn't fuel at Mombasa typically (2-2.5)% cheaper than up at Nairobi with an altitude of some 5,600ft?
Is it company policy to depart min sector at Nairobi and to tank at Mombasa?

Haha for acting like an ass hat.
You're not really telling anyone off. He was only asking to get more information about it.
Who knows you're probably the guy you tried to leave with out fuel

telling off your kind
What kind is that? You know nothing about me... whether I'm male, female, CPL, ATPL, black, white, brown or yellow.
Just goes to prove everything posted here about you so far is true, I'm afraid. Pulling the race card time and again, as you do, tells everyone on here everything we need to know.
He was only asking to get more information about it.

@Lamyna flo, didnt mention race on this particular thread, not once, infact i meant sensationalist always trying to dig out dirt on specific institutions that you don't find favor with, it is you who is insecure whatever race or creed you are from, on the other thread you brought out the race card i only echoed your sentiments.
@ CC, it is company policy to pick up minimum fuel on the NBO - MBA sector, both to and from, even though fuel is cheaper in Mombasa, its only by a shilling and a couple cents, to tanker out of MBA on a 733, you will need to carry an extra say 3.5 tons of fuel, according to company manuals your burn off is increased by 4% per tonne of extra fuel, per hour of flight time, so for a 45 min flight out of MBA increase in burn off by about 100kg, that means you are paying about 7800kshs extra for your burn off to carry an extra 3.5 tons which if you uplifted in Nairobi would cost you about kshs 5,000 more, doesn't make economical sense, so its always min FP fuel both ways unless there are known anticipated delays, weather etc

Thank you very much for the information from which one could interpret that it would be perfectly possible to want a quick top up after having taxied out to the holding point and back again.

ryanair !!!!!!!!!!11
Guys
just some infos
On this link in french Ryanair flew a passenger all the way to the wrong destination and flew his bagages to the right destination. it all happened after the pax has checked in for his flight and during boarding he took the wrong one. he realized it when the pilot announced that they are overflying a country he shouldnot .
now can you count how many oversights for that to happen
Not to justify anything but just to say it can happen anywhere
WWW.CRASH-AERIEN.AERO • Afficher le sujet - Erreur de passager à l'embarquement sur un avion de Ryanair
hope i am not violating any copyright or any thing like that
