IFR rating is good in Maun, most companies like u to have it if u are going to move onto the Van, but also we spend most of our days between 075 and 105 in Haze and smoke, negative horizon. So Possibly good idea. P.s. I flew here with a cpl and no ifr for a while and i wasn't a glorified ppl! Just a visual CPL, good times.

P.S. anyone want my job?

I can't be bothered to get into why Sefo are weird but just ask around guys who have been to Maun and most will tell you Kavango air and sefo are the last choices.

And if you think the only people who don't like it are lazy then ABH you are so off the mark. Oh and you can't spell Africa properly this is the non bone head spelling!

Anyway if you are thinking of going to Maun for a job, its all about having a bit of drive and fitting in, so go and don't let Pprune effect your decisions to much. There are so many opinions on here including my own but they may not be yours, so make your own mind up and be your own person.

In terms of the IF thing it may have been different before I was there but when I was there no one cared if you had IF or not and there are plenty of Van pilots who did not, its your call.

Last post on the subject.

I know of very few pilots in Maun WITHOUT IF ratings at the moment, they might not be current, but they have it! Oh, and by the way.......Bla Bla Bla...... I'm in Maun and have been for the last four years!

IFR rating is good in Maun, most companies like u to have it if u are going to move onto the Van, but also we spend most of our days between 075 and 105 in Haze and smoke, negative horizon.
I rest my case about the IFR thing now! You are just better qualified!

Besides a CPL without an IF rating is just a glorified PPL.
People, if I offended anybody with the above post, then I apologise. JUST DONT BE SO SENSITIVE! IMHO the chap with the IF rating is the better qualified person.

See you guys in Maun for a cold one some time!

I'm so pleased that you are in Maun, we must know each other. I'm even more pleased that I am not in Maun anymore.

You guys are both right

Nyathi and Bla Bla Bla are really giving us the right clue. There are people who like to be in Maun and there are the ones who go there to build some hours and then they're off. But this all doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned, because in terms of flying Maun is one of the best places to start for either type. The only thing one should decide is wether he wants to go there or not.

Nyathi you sure have a few beers from me in January!

wierdest charter company

Baah... Dont listen to any of these south afrikan guys moaning about sefo..They are just lazy to work... Sefo just makes their pilots work hard and pay's good money too...Its actually the best company to work in southern afrika...
I'm not South African, but I'm leaving Sefofane in disgust. They are the dead last choice in Maun. Don't waste your time. I hear the Namibian, South African, and Zimbabwean operations are better run but Botswana is a disaster. I'm choosing indefinite unemployment rather than continue to work for Sefo in Maun.

As long as I'm up in a plane and logging hours, I dont really care how Im treated. If its flying 24/7 just means that I log the hours quicker.
Kinda like flight school. Go there, get it done, then get out of there.

Hi

First to say thanks to everyone on the thread who has given info, whether it be positive or otherwise. Csanad's blog really does help out a lot with getting a picture together of what it's like out there.

I've been playing with the idea of heading out to Maun since the (northern) summer, and decided that if I don't go now I may not ever go! That kind of flying sure does look epic! So I'll be heading out in early December. Hopefully should have the pleasure of meeting a few of you out there.

Graham

Hey guys enjoy your trip to Maun, I hope it works out for you. One bit of advise, all meet up with each other but remember you are each others competition.

Whilst there I saw loads of guys on the search for work some used to hang around together all the time and would turn up together at the companies IMHO that does not strengthen your position, also watch what you say as Maun is small and people will hear.

One guy arrived and told the chief pilot in his first sentence that and I quote" my father is a senior captain for SAA ". As if that will make any odds, he spent over a month looking and left.

Another guy told the CP that he had been in town two days but had not come in as he had been on the piss with his mates. He left a few weeks later.

And one guy from NZ drove most of the pilots in Town to distraction and hung around for ages and generally invited himself everywhere drunk everyone's beer and never got a round in and was just bloody annoying. Some guys even told him that he should save his money as he will never get a job Maun, He eventually left.

Its a balance of showing your face in the companies so they know you, maybe helping out a bit but not getting annoying.

Good luck and enjoy Botswana.

Thanks Bla Bla Bla for the sound advice.

I'm getting the vaccinations done over the next week or two. On that note, people have recommended to me that I get antimalarials before I go. They're fairly expensive here, especially when buying for a fairly lengthy period of time. I know it's my health, and I don't really want to cheap out on it, but I was wondering what others have done, and if they are readily available in Maun and if it's worth waiting until I get there to buy them?

NZ Pilot & lilflyboy, whereabouts are you planning to stay for your first few nights (and longer) there?

See you soon!

Graham

GW,

Its personal choice but I didn't know any pilots myself included that took anti malaria, as it would cost a fortune and I don't know if it would do you any harm over an extended period. Maun is quite low risk, most cases and there are very few I heard of ( not pilots ) got it around the Chobe area.

Bla Bla Bla.......hey, we have something we agree on! (just joking)

GW....To take any malaria tablets for a long period of time, will stuff your liver and kidneys up properly. You wont feel the effects now, but when you get older or in a few years time.

I'm with Bla Bla Bla on this one, I know of nobody that takes these tablets and very few people here get malaria. Should you get the symptoms, you go the the Medi-Clinic and get your blood tested, should you have malaria, you get treated and that's it.

Remember the advice that was given, Maun is a small place so watch how you approach a job situation and watch what you say at the pub. Your fellow job seekers are your competition, so make sure of your approach.

Good luck!

P.S. So far nobody has been hired and there is around 8 chaps looking for work. Some chaps have come and gone already!

Sounds reasonable - I'll just stick with the basic vaccinations!

Malarone tablets and malaria

Hey chaps,

The thing with taking anti malaria tablets is that they don't necessarily stop you contracting malaria - they just prevent death in the event of contraction!

As you are thinking of going for a long period of time keep a little malarone with you. If bitten, start taking it and consult a Doctor.

Agree with the above comments on long term use.

Great thread by the way..

Cheers, L.
