Got an email from one of the opperators today saying they are fully staffed for the upcoming season. Here is hoping they like me better in person than through email. Did appreciate the Reply though.

I have read this thread. I have FAA licenses ASEL, AMEL, Instrument, CFI, CFII, MEI and about 1400 total hours, 130 multi, and 1100 as an instructor. Am planning to get a ticket to somewhere in Africa sometime this week to leave mid January. Leaning heavily towards Tanzania. Any last minute thoughts or advice on that one.

re Maun Employment
In reply to DDMow - 5 or 6 hopeful pilots currently trudging about Maun looking for employment at present but no-one employing until before Feb at the earliest -this is a low point in the season and tourist numbers are down due the world economic situation. Prob best to save your money and query again mid/late jan re arriving late jan/early Feb

yeah this is true. all the companies have taken all the pilots they need, so till these latest guys are trained and online there wont be any more jobs for a bit. Feb is the best bet for sure.

Any other advices for another "pilot nerd" who is going jobhunting in Maun?
Hi to all aviation folks out there,
I've been reading the "Maun 2008/2009" topic for couple of weeks now and it's injecting at least a bit of optimism into my pilot veins again.
I finished my CPL(ASEL, AMEL, IFR) in Florida 3 months ago with total of 254hrs(201PIC, 121XC, 16NIGHT and 18 International Ops(Caribbean Islands Flying)), came back to my country(Czech Republic - European Union) broke, sending out tons of CVs with applications and doing follow up calls. So far no succes - seems like absolutely no-one in the world(except Europe, but with my FAA papers I have no chance)is hiring lowtimers like me.
With constantly decreasing level of available finances on my account I started to fall into big depression and helplessness...until I found article on Maun. I was working last 2 months very hard to earn some cash to buy a ticket to JNB and onwards to MUB. And you know what? I did it!!! I'm travelling out there in second half of January hoping to find a job there! I can not sit on the ground anymore hoping oneday I will be offered a job. I need to fly! I feel like I'm just a death meat when sitting on the ground without a job. So I will do my best to get one. I gave up everything - my previous career, my personal life to earn enough money to afford flight training. And now I will bet everything I have and did on this last card! Chances are 50/50 - I'll get a job or I screw up.
Is there anybody out there who can give me some hints to win this game please? I appreciate anything and everything.
Very big thanks go to everyone who contributed to Maun 2008/2009 article because it gave me(and I believe to other "fresh" pilots too) another impulse of hope that despite my low flying hours I may be able to get a job.

hey, been also thinking of that rwanda. Are there any operators in rwanda at all? Seems like there is almost no flying in that country, only for one national carrier i know about. if u have any info about rwanda, PM me or just drop it here, we might meet there... never know....

Best place in Congo is Goma, but is a dangerous country and now is in a deep civil war. Forget for a time go there. I friend of mine was one month and didn't find any job

I thought I'dd shed some more light.
Ive been in Windhoek since the 6th now. And it's been going great.
I found a great place to stay, full board with tv and pool for 100 NAD per night.
The day I got here I called Scenic and they asked me for an interview straight away. All went well and yesterday I did the required psychometric test at a practitioners house. Im waiting for the results now. If I pass there is another interview and then I need to get my 210 rating. The fastest and cheapest way is to do it in SA and do the exam with a DE (directorate examiner) for both SA and Namib. But this guy (Robert Robertson) has had a hip opertion and is out for 2 months. The long and expensive way is do the rating here at West Air. I might be doing that. After training on the right seat for 20 hours and flying PIC for at least 10 hours on empty flights you can sign the 12 month contract.
Scenic hired 2 Sweeds and 2 French last year, and are now looking for a few more. Myself, a person from SA and recently another Sweed are applying.
Yesterday I called Sefofane but they said they hired alot of pilots end of last year and now have 25. The bookings are down for this season so they might already have too many pilots.

Dont try Bay Air cause they only have 1900's. Wings over africa is not recommended.
