Greenno,
Have you read this whole thread, all 14 pages? (Well, maybe not the last two.) There's a lot of information about when it's best to go -- and a lot of other good advice.

People are saying to go now or January to be ready for the upcoming season. But a lot of us are going then so there will be much competition.

There are no guarantees that any of us will find work, but at least you'll meet the Chief Pilots and people in charge.

Everyone seems to agree: Forget about finding a job there by telephoning or emailing. You just have to go.

MKA742 - the mention earlier of flying 50ft over elephant is really an absolute no go ! This kind of attitude is totally against any ethics promoted by the companies (Wilderness Safaries etc.)
You can always spot the Sefo boy's. Scenic flights at FL075. Agree with not deliberately flying over animals but I think anyone who has lived in Bot's know's all the guys and girls spend a bit of time at 50ft

Steady on DDMow,

Actually partially defended the guy in the last post

I was just trying to point out to the lad the bigger picture. By the sounds of it he's got some good goals and aspirations but needs to take a step back and realise that aviation has a few more little snags to it (which i think is normal for someone at 22 anyway). Despite what I've said I really do wish the guy all the best as he aims high and I hope he achieves what he is out to.

You've also got to realise chap that this is pprune and a sense of humour is not a bad thing to have on your shoulder when paging through this stuff. Dont take it too seriously. I dont disect and analyse everything turning it into a CRM exercise which is obviously one of your pastimes. I dont take this stuff to heart and am not one of the genre who get dressed in full uniforn and put on four bars to post on this site which i imagine you might be. Ease up buddy

Must go. the trees are starting rustle and i need to launch this kite.

P.S. And thats jean panT by the way

Lol

Thx guys but you dont have to defend me.
If they really think that I would fly over an elephant at 50ft lol, then my ATPL training hasnt thought me a thing.
Didnt expect that you would take that seriously proppelorpilot...

So anyway, if someone is still interested in what I have to say here;
I am going to windhoek and swakopmund in jan, probably for four weeks. Just to feel if I am welcome and liked and if there is a possibility I can get a job.

Im off this thread now because I prolly wont get to Maun, and I dont like being the centre of attention.
I will post my findings on my blog and for those who want to read it PM me and ill give you the adress, if you cant find it on google in jan lol.

Delicate flower out!

Snoop Thanks Dogismycopilot

Sorry is not correct your nickname.

Yes a read all thread, affortunately not all in one day je je je je. really is a lot of information but my head is close to make BANG!!!!!

I was working in Congo so for me is not a problem live in Maun or another place.

About call was only to check how is the market now there I was close to go to Congo again one month before civil war to find a job in Kinshasa o worse in Goma I know Africa is different that Europe only can get a job knocking the chef pilot door but I need get money to go.

I hope have a meeting in Maun or better in the Maun sky with you ja ja ja ja

About licence that I read some one worried about medical and licence, in fact I didn't revalidate my MEP because is very expesinve, I prefer revalidated when I need it nowdays a I have a CPL SEP IR and I revalidated IR beacuse a friend of mine want to fly some IFR flights in his own airplane.

Good luck for all future bush pilots.

Kelly the Kite and Billy the Boeing...

Guy's

Kelly the kite is all you gonna fly in Maun and who wants to fly Billy the Boeing anyway?? Flying is flying if you do it for the passion then it doesn't matter what you fly. Your ATPL's is going to help you jack sh..t down here when you flying along in a C172. Sefofane does game flights at 500ft agl which wil give you 30sec to sort yourself out before swimming, at 50ft you will have 5 sec before you become the proud owner of a aliminium tree house when the donkie say howzit.

Sorry!

I wasn't going to post anything else on this thread unless related to it's title, as I don't want to turn this into the chronicle of my bowels. Since, however, somebody has decided to question why I have apparently decided to get appendicitis, had to return to the UK for personal reasons, and then get dead twisty bowel I feel I should say something.

Apologies now for the irrelevant post.

I can provide hospital discharge notes, death certificates, and up until four hours ago you could have visited me in ward 16 at York General Hospital. If you ignore the long account of arrival in Maun I typed up which you took offence to, which I don't think anybody could just make up, and if you ignore the fact that saying these things happened to me when they haven't doesn't actually do anything for me, then you can ask the guys in Maun. I evidently did not hang around with the same crowd as you in Maun Mr DSB - however if you ask a few of the Sefo guys, most of the Mack, Moremi or Delta Air lot (some of them check this thread), they will confirm my existence. Just say I looked about 12. They will remember. I will also be more than happy to show you my half union jack naval.

Right - that little rant over with, the thread can continueth. Will it get to 20,000 views or will it have to be locked?

I can draw my little line of positivity again if you would like...

Hi Folks

Just to a little up beat news into this thread to all you new starters out there. I started out in the bush in zim and mozambique 20 years ago the best flying of my life and would go back tomorrow if i won the lotto!!!!

I now am lucky enough to be a 4 year captain 777 out of lhr with 12 years 747 classic and 400 under my belt as well as hs748/atp 737 and 727 on the ticket.

I learnt a hell of a lot in the bush which i still use every day at work if you can give it a go and it will stand you in good stead for your entire career. Get those first magic hours under your belt enjoy them they are fun and the rest is up to you.

And good luck waiterpilot you have the right attitude you will be welcome on my flightdeck any day!!

good luck and enjoy

There are some odd people in the world, all I'm saying is I suspect this Waiterpilot is one of them. Obviously I've already asked around. If you'd spoken to Sefofane you'd know there are no jobs going. This is the end of my input. Fred.

Hello everyone,
I have been reading the thread for a couple of weeks now. I got as much details as I could about flying at Maun and still going further in my search to land a job out there.
Before I say anything, my hearty thanks to waiterpilot for starting the thread and to all others who made this thread very interesting. Well wishes and speedy recovery to waiterpilot.
I got my FAA CPL IR/MEL with 270 TT. Though I have good opportunities here in US to start off with the first job, I find the bush flying around okavango delta truly amazing. I swear I have read this thread dozen times before I actually thought to contribute to this thread.
To me it seems there will be less job openings and more of job seekers making more competitive atmosphere in Jan - April 09, Maun. But in spite of knowing this, I have made up my mind to go there in Jan end and try my luck. Old boys can call me a wannabe, well thats what I am with a great enthusiasm to fly over the Africa.
One or two of the comments here in this tread are really demotivating . But cheer up guys and hope for the best .
Anyways, it will be nice and be in touch for those who are going to Maun early next year. Waiterpilot, I hope to meet you there.
Regards,

Hi Everyone who's fortunate to be or have flown in Africa,

I was just wondering if you could name a couple of places like Maun, where all wannabees can hope to be employed. I mean, not only it'll be helpful, but also it may provide a little wide space to hunt around.

Jobs Situation

With the current worldwide economic crisis, the jobs market is going to be hit hard by the drop in tourists coming to Maun.

I think that there are going to be very few jobs available in the next few months. There are several hopefuls already in town 'doing the rounds' each day and they are having very little luck.

I'd personally save my cash and put it off until things improve - otherwise, good luck to all the hopefuls!
