The national/regional hatred seemed to increase after Thatcherism then possibly even accelerate after Blair. Maybe it was always there and I never noticed as much, or was too young to notice. Read a few good articles about it in the papers recently, with de-industrialisation and Thatcherism, the rise of globalization, rise of London, centralization, collapse of the Scottish Conservative Party vote, early introduction of the Poll Tax in Scotland, loss of heavy industry, rise of financial and social inequality all being stated as reasons.
If you watched and supported England, on the TV in a bar in Scotland in '96 and again in 2000 it became very apparent how things were moving.
But I think there's more to it than all that, and again think we are finished as a United Kingdom if we move onwards on our present trajectory.
The rest of the world seem bemused or amazed by it all.

I have to say I dislike brown with a passion but he has performed very well on this. The bar was set very low though!! Think the jocks will vote in as, he will come up short, the maybe be replaced by brown! (Assuming a yes of course)
To be honest, I think that Gordon Brown was dropped into the cack of leading a failed nuLabor government by the totally odious Bliar. Gordon was simply out of his depth at the time.
Those who refer to him as 'cyclops' or similar should note that he occasioned his injury whilst playing a tough game of rugby - but since coped with his disability nonetheless. Those such as Jeremy Clarkson, who publicly mocked his condition, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
A pity that he wasn't heading the 'Better Together' campaign - Darling came across as a weak and ineffectual individual with a short fuse.
Oh well, we'll see what the polls bring.

I watched a father daughter pair on the news each voting the opposite, the Father was a realist over the fact he could see the Country could not afford to do this, while the daughter that must have been about 17 appeared to have her head in the clouds and appeared to be voting based on National ferver, with no knowledge as to the effects it will have upon them.
One hopes it does not go that way, as I have an awful feeling it's not going to turn out well for them if a yes vote is the result.
One does wonder what they will do if it is a yes vote and the Orkneys, Shetland and Western Islands then go for a breakaway from Scotland, that will in effect rob Salmond of a lot of his oil assets and Salmond can slink back under the stone he emerged from.
If it is a no vote, no matter how close, I take it that is it that, it will be the end of it and it will not occur again, 1 year, 5 years or 10 years down the line.

NutLoose,
I watched the same Father and Daughter news item; I agree the Daughter had only a shallow understanding of what she was voting for and couldn't be convinced by her Father that Scotland can't afford all these promises.
Very sad to watch, we in England have no say and have to wait and see if the majority come to their senses and realise what is best for the UK!

I watched a TV interview the other day with a lass about the same age as the daughter being discussed: 16 or 17 at a guess.
She said "I'm going to vote YES this time round", which is demonstrative of the lack of understanding of the youngsters being given the vote for the first time!

Every cloud has a silver lining.
I wonder how many Scottish MP's at Westminster are papping themselves. Tomorrow morning they could be out of the Gravy Train. Whoops, sorry, I meant out of a job.

Posted on the Flypast forum, it would appear CNN is expecting a 110% turn out at the vote.

That's probably pretty much it.
Well, for another 17 or 18 years anyway. Salmond will be getting on a bit by then, although that doesn't seemed to have stopped Mugabe.

I don't see how Salmond has any reason to hang his head. There may have been flaws in his campaign but the debate has enriched the national consciousness, gained more devolution and led to a vote close enough to have the Westminster crowd sweating.
I think he was hamstrung by the currency issue because yhere simply was no palatable answer.
