New Modem - I'm confused

OK, after many years I decided to upgrade my ancient modem. It's a ZyXEL Prestige 600 series (from the early naughties??). My IP was happy to send me a ZyXEL P-660HU for ADSL for a nominal fee.

OK, I thought it would be as simple as removing the Ethernet and DSL (phone) cables from the back of the old modem and plugging them into the new modem.

However I don't get a green light for DSL on the new Modem. Checked all cables secure etc. I can access the Modem so the Ethernet connection must be good, but no DSL (and Internet).

Any ideas?

You probably need to access the ZyXel's web interface and click on the internet/wireless setup wizard which will lead you through the steps. It will try to autodetect the settings, otherwise you will need to enter them manually. Your ISP should have supplied suitable settings either with this box or with the previous one. If you don't have them and you can't call support, simply reconnect the old one, access its web interface and write down the ISP settings so you can transfer them to the new box.

Also, maybe check the DSL cable one more time, and make sure it's in the right hole: the fifth one, all by itself near the antenna (if I'm thinking about the same box you have). Since you don't have a green light after 2 minutes, this is actually the first thing I'd check, even if you've already checked 99 times.

Thanks BushFive.

I did that and got the helpful response "No DSL". No suggestions on how to fix that.

I do have a 'filter' on the DSL cable (where it's plugged into the wall) but it is ancient as well. The IP provided a new filter, but I didn't use it as it has the 'Swiss' telephone jack (unique I think) where I need the rj.

I'll see if I can get a new filter at an electronics store today with the right jack. Perhaps it is the old filter but ...

Oh, my new modem is not Wifi - I've got a Apple Airport Wifi in place and the two are connected via Ethernet.

Does the old box still work if you plug it in? If so, the cabling to the wall and onwards is OK. I don't know your modem if it's not wifi. ZyXel tends two have two helpful lights on the front: DSL is up, and internetty stuff is possible. If you don't have the DSL light, it's almost certainly a physical problem rather than a configuration problem, unless you ISP has non-standard settings.

Yes, when I reconnected the two cables the old modem worked just fine.

But internet lore says for safety I should be upgrading ...

OK, now we're past my experience of the ZyXels. You should access the web interface for the old one, write down the settings for the internet connection, replace it with the new one, and check the new settings match. If not, replace. The browser interface is probably at 192.168.1.1, and if you've never changed the access password, it's probably 1234. Check your manual if in doubt. Many, many, many moons ago, I was an alpha and beta tester for ZyXel. At the time, it was stupidly rugged and over-specced. I have a soft spot for it.

You may need to set the login user name, and account password. without them nothing will work. Its a bit like wanting to talk to Mum, but not dialing the number.

Yes, I accessed the new Modem, logged on, changed the password, logged on again and changed the DNS settings.

Still, no DSL ...

I'm suspect the modem may be faulty. I'll give the IP a call and practice my Swiss German (ein bitseillie).

I'm not talking about the modem password, its your internet account user name and password.

I just hade a look at the manual, and it seems not to cover this, may be its in the install CD.

A lot of the settings, including the login/password have been pre-populated by the ISP.

They said the modem was ready to go, no need to make any settings etc. Plug and (not) play.

Hi ExXB

Firstly, from the model of modem provided, I'm making an educated guess that your ISP is Sunrise, and what follows is based on that assumption: ;-)

* It should indeed all be plug-and-play (according to the instructions ), and that you do not need to enter ISP username, etc. That should be done automatically between modem and ISP).

* It might be that the modem is faulty, but before exchanging etc etc, I'll chuck another thought into the ring...

Based on
1/ "I thought it would be as simple as removing the Ethernet and DSL (phone) cables from the back of the old modem and plugging them into the new modem"
and
2/ "when I reconnected the two cables the old modem worked just fine")
I'd contend that the problem is highly likely to be that you need to use not just the new filter provided, but that you also need to use the new cable.

Hi WeeJeem.

Thx for your post. Yes, Sunrise is my ISP, been with them sing the late 90s, without issues.

I've tried every, possible combination of new/old cables new/old filters etc, but never get the DSL light to remain on. I've posted a question to ZyXEL's web-site to see if they have any ideas.

Frustrating because I don't need a new modem, but have been told I should get a new(er) one for security. When I do listen, the {expletive deleted} thing won't work.

Do I really need a new one?

Are you sure there wasn't a CD (perhaps mini one) in the package that you are supposed to install?

No, the Modem was preconfigured by the ISP. I can see all their settings and everything appears to be populated.

Doesn't your ISP have a telephone number you can ring for technical assistance? Last time I had trouble installing a new modem a quick phone call to my ISP had them patiently taking me through the process of a successful set up.

Spent a couple of hours on the phone with the ISP (technical line only available Mon-Fri). We plugged in cables and removed them, did just about everything I had done previously.

Funny though I could no longer access the new Modems configuration (Safari error 'server not available').

She concluded there was a hardware problem and told me to return the modem for replacement.

So, the story continues.

Sorry to hear you're still suffering, ExXB :-(

Just as a further heads-up, it can sometimes take a while for a new modem (esp if it's a significant "upgrade", eg from ADSL to VDSL) to have its profile recognised and enabled.

They typically warn that this can take several hours, but I've had times where it took seconds or a couple of minutes, and other times it turned into an overnight epic.

Try to resist the temptation to help things along by cycling the power, or wiggling the cables, or... well, you get the idea
