Correct… I do feel that as an experienced, competent pilot I can pick and choose who I’d like to work for (and that’s exactly what I did). The fact that KLM are recruiting non-Dutch speakers for the first time shows that the jobs market is different at the moment

KLM are not hiring non-Dutch speakers for the first time. They have always had a preference for Dutch speaking candidates but since their existence they have and continue to hire not only non -Dutch speakers but non-Dutch.

I feel like doing your research before an airline interview is a must. You must show your motivation, your commitment and dedication. Inquiring about the selection process does just that. Airlines want pilots that come to work (and interviews) prepared as well as they can. That includes asking others about the selection process.
And researching about the career opportunities and benefits the airline offers helps you to structure your motivations and have realistic expectations for the position. Having that sorted out during the interview is also a plus in my opinion.

I recently completed the assessment at KLM. Although I’m not Dutch and only know a little of the language, I can wholeheartedly recommend the company and the way the entire process was conducted. I’ve attended several assessments over the course of my career, but none were handled as professionally as this one. If anyone is interested, I’m happy to share insights about the process as well as some useful tips.

In terms of t&c there is quite a big difference between legacies so it definitely is important to do your research.

KLM and British Airways for example. It is a night and day difference. In terms of atmosphere, training style. Really depends on what you prefer I guess.
But in terms of T&C KLM is definitely quite a bit better on the longer term. Higher salary and better work/life balance. Especially on the long haul.

probably none. Maybe overtime payment but that's about it.

Pension

As an approaching 40 yo Dutchie I am also applying at the moment.

I got the CAO part with the salary and stuff, but could someone explain the bruto pension which is mentioned on a few occasions in this thread.

In NL you would normally get
- state pension (peanuts)
- supplement pension from your working years with an employer.

Is this bruto pension additive a payout of the latter or another supplement?

Thanks in advance!

state pension (AOW) will be paid from 67y and 3m. This will potentially rise towards 69 in the next years. This will be 70% of the minimum full time wage (+-1600 eur). Living together it will be 50% of the minimum wage per person.

Since the retirement age at KLM will be 58, with a maximum of 62 depending on part-time, you will only receive bruto pensioen until AOW will be added from 67y 3m.

So KLM will pay you bruto pension from your retirement age. The amount will depend on years in service and many more variables.

Since you can only generate pension up to a maximum of 138k per year, you will receive NET pension on top of your salary which is paid out monthly. You will have to invest this money yourself to be an addition to your AOW and 'bruto pension'.

So the pension scheme will be based on these 3 parts. A little bit harder to comprehend but in general the pension is excellent at KLM. But it will require some self discipline with the net pension part.

Its seems to be generally based on a whats in it for me attitude. The queries about commuting!! Part time flying! How much money! Taxes! Do I need to speak Dutch! Wanting to know all the in and outs of the assessment stages and even the simulator program. Man up all of you, apply and see how far you get. On your own without adult supervision.

I would look at it from a different perspective - pretty sure the sentiment of them majority towards looking at new opportunities is the same as it used to be in the past. Only thing that has changed is the accessibility to information. And if we have the ability to gather as much information as possible before we waste each others' time, what is wrong with that? If people think the job is not the right move for them based on info they gathered before applying, they will definitely save recruiters some time, as well as make the process quicker to those genuinely interested in the job. But then again, each will have his/her own opinion :)
