KLM offer
Good afternoon,
I have been offered a Job in KLM, currently I am flying for a low cost carrier in Europe but I also have offers to fly the 747 for Singapore or Cathay. I am trying to find information about compensation and conditions on KLM but there CLA is not public, I would appreciate any insights and recommendations. KLM has all the tickets to win but I would like to know more before making my decision.

Just 2 reasons why:
- During COVID, Not a single person was laid off.
- Another reason, they have a very strong union.

Hello, I would say it all depends on what you are looking for. KLM might offer you a job but then you will be stuck on the short haul for another 10 years or so.
on the other hand they have very good conditions but they will still pay less than what you could make in Singapore Airlines or Cathay…but the cost of living in Singapore is also higher than if you live in the Dutch countryside.
If I may ask, when did you receive the offer from KLM and on which fleet ?

PPJN is fairly accurate. Although FO starting salary depends on age so likely higher than stated on website

Congratulations ! I passed my COVA a few weeks ago and still waiting for a start date. Can I ask you how long you had to wait between the « congratulations » email and the « here is your start date » email ?

At KLM don't look at the short perspective, but at the long perspective. You will start with a wage between €70.000 and €100.000, but after 25 years (as captain long-haul), you will go over €420.000, excluding per diems (really good, for 24 hours CPH it is €150 NET or for a 4 day HKG it is close to €900 NET) and bonuses (at 100% contract). Their pension is great - by far the best in European aviation, all kinds of part-time possibilities, maternity leave, sick leave, ... (You will earn the same when flying 0 hours or 900 hours, the only difference are the per diems). After 1 year you can commute for free between your home country and the Netherlands and many more items (do not even start about asking questions like food when flying etc.)

I am flying there already for a couple of years, and you are not even close. The flight attendants are really good and no, they are not racist, arrogant or nasty in any way. So, I don't know where you info comes from... Besides all the good benefits, the rosters are great - both on short and long haul. Wishing you a great evening!

I also do not know where and when dan.cat3c has experienced the things he mentioned, but I have not had any such rude, or arrogant, or racist colleagues yet. Perhaps those colleagues responded in kind to the attitude they were presented with?

If both of you are Dutch you should not be talking about never experiencing racism, it just doesn't make any sense.
Have you ever been around the country or read/listened to the news, the entire Dutch society is centered on racism.
XCM is available after 6 months if I'm not mistaken, and you need to request it so that they give you a code.

Dear Dan, I spent most of my career so far as an expat abroad. I know a fair few of the forms discrimination and racism can take. It may not have always been directed at me, that does not mean it just passes me by. You shared your experience, I shared mine. Maybe let's leave it at that.

I have been to the Netherlands several times and have never experienced any racism. This could be partly due to the fact that im German and our cultures are very similar though.

Each to his own, as always, and I have no idea what age you are or what your experience is, nor what your long term dreams are. However, if I was in your shoes I would dive headlong into KLM, as it is a career airline with an excellent contract.
From what I hear about CX, run as far away as possible. As to SQ, I have no info, but I would be surprised if they offer a bloke (from Manchester?) the same career progression as a local.
If you pass on KLM, chances are good that you will (in the future) consider it the worst decision of your life.... Just saying..
Be smart, take the long-term view, and if you sometime in the future would like some adventure, there might be some leave opportunity for you to go a year or two somewhere exotic and fly, and then come back to the mothership.
