Captain of an 70-ton jet with 400 landings, what do you think?

Back with Iceair, coming in from Europe, if the WX, TFC and Crew were ok we disconnect all the gizmos and handfly from FL370. Sometimes as the wx is so bad the A/P is not able to do an Autoland. Up to 70 knots in Keflavik with bad visibility you need your fly skills fresh no A/P to save you. Is good to keep the skills alive for those days but beware of how and when you do it, is not about trying or Iīll do my best, you either are both ok to do IT or NOT.

GLAGAZ, I agree with you but very few clubs have a 70t jet to have some fun on the weekends. Just do your hand flying when the situation is right for it.
Don' t do it when:
In a heavely congested airport,
On severe poor wheather,
With a brand new f/o or capt,
When you are tired
At night in an airport you are not familiar with,
When the other crew member is not happy with it
With degraded systems or deferred items.
We must be proud of maintaining our hand flying skills but I also take pride and would be very happy with my captain if he tells me that we will do an Autoland because we have been 12 hours on duty with minimum rest and we are just tired

After a trans-atlantic flight to a small airfield in the Carribean, eg St Lucia, are you going to tell the company 'no, my skill set doesn't match up to what you want me to fly'?
Fly what is appropriate and, if your Captain/Co-Pilot isn't happy then that needs to be discussed prior to departure. As a professional pilot you MUST be able to operate the aircraft at a basic level regardless of if you are tired or think that it's an ego trip. It isn't, its a common basic skill that is demanded in return for our pay. If you can't cope with the aircraft manually or in a reversionary mode then what are you doing there?

What I mentioned above is when you would like to "practice" Of course if you have no other choice but to do a NDB with marginal WX that is what you have to do, that is not a choice you have, thatīs why we should practice regularly apart from the simulator, to have our skills fresh when the time comes where you have no choice and you MUST be able to do IT.
The example above was to highlight the need of practice hand flying without taking unnecessary risks, and using all available resources for a given set of conditions and situations. Prior to a flight , I have it very clear you are either fit or unfit to fly.
