Thumbs up SIA pay hike!

A colleague of mine tells me that the SIA pilots have just agreed upon yet another pay rise.
If he is to be believed, their hourly allowances will now be approx S$ 61 for first 70 hrs and then S$ 85 till 80 hrs. Beyond that all will be S$ 245 per hour. Add that to their average layover allowances of S$ 300 per day, and these 777 captains become the highest paid pilots in he world....!!
Even AFTER their 10% taxes.
And of course if u are an expat, then you get some additional house rental and kids schooling allowance thrown in. I reckon a good 20k usd take home pay per month after taxes.
A good months work etiquette eh..

Lightbulb It's not all gold that glitters

Alexander & King, please keep in mind that Singapore has been experiencing a lot of inflation and has become a very expensive place to live. I've been going to SIN for years and it's amazing how expensive it has gotten over the last 2-3 years.

Lot's of nervous investors are looking for safe havens like Singapore to live and park their money and have pushed up prices a lot, notably in real estate. Like Switzerland, Singapore is focusing more and more on becoming an international finance hub and it seems that high prices (think London, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Monaco etc) are part of the deal.

It's really a no-brainer to see why SIA uses a specially configured A380 with a business class only upper deck on the SIN-ZRH / LHR-SIN routes.

Singapore based. All overseas bases were closed quite some time ago. Remember this is a national carrier that also employs ex-pats, not a company that employs foreigners first and then locals eg CX

I have yet to see any thing with regards to the pay hike. The transport allowance and overnight allowances had an increase but other than that nothing so far.

There are expats with SIA (not many)but all of the contract were renewed on a local term " no allowances given"..

As of now only SQ Cargo have an expats package and I can see that going away in the near future. Only local terms will be offered in Singapore.

As I understand all expat allowances (school, housing) were taken away a couple years ago, I looked into SIA cargo a few months back and my numbers considering the cost of living in Singapore simply didn't add up, you could try and live in Malaysia and commute to SIN to lower the costs but otherwise is just not possible to live there with a family and a couple of kids, don't get me wrong, Singapore is a great place, clean, safe, it is called the garden city and the name fits it very well, I wouldn't mind living there if the allowances were restored, but Singapore's charms come at a cost, you will be paying upwards of $100,000 SIN dollars ($80,000 USD) for a Toyota Camry, a beer will run you 25 sin dollars, phone, electric and gas bills are outrageous, more expensive than even Japan, and rent for a three bedroom apartment large enough for a family of 4 will set you back $8,000 Sin dollars and let's not even discuss how much you will have to dishout for school for the two kids

Meanwhile, I am betting the LCC subsidiary Scoot employs much cheaper 777 pilots - probably at AirAsia pay levels to maintain their margins...

Anyone know what Scoot 777 pilots will be paid?

Scoot pay-not nearly enough considering it is a 777. Also a large component-nearly 50%-is flying pay. Can't remember if the basic was either 10 or 12k a month-looked at it and filed it under-they have to be kidding. If you do >80hrs a month you may break $21k SIN. In addition-wait for it-an incredibly generous 24 days Annual Leave-and yet they are actually getting pilots. The race to the bottom continues....

Domonican,
What you write is pure BS.
Expat 'allowances' are very much in place. Although they aren't hiring at present nor are expected to do so very soon.
A scoot captain makes about $ 22-23k depending on his flying. So does an SIA local captain. Although sectors are longer therefore more rest. Some allowances too are better An expat makes about $ 5k more than local. But don't be fooled by that. Cause he will use up all of that to pay for rental/mortgage for his home and his kids education.
A half litre can of great lager costs inside of $ 5. Where in god's name have you got your numbers my good man.
Automobiles are expensive. A BMW 5 series would put you down 200k. But that's the government plan. Reduce cars on the road. And therefore pollution. Any why on earth would you need a car in this island city with such a strong public transport infrastructure. Like taking sand to the desert.
A 3 bedder in a decent neighbourhood can be anything from 3.5k to 4.5k PM.
And yes. Only SIA cargo hiring of late. That too in spurts. Will close soon.
Scoot is ok for now with their pilot numbers.
And the so called wage 'hike' is true. These are the old numbers. The new CA has been signed. So effective 1st Jan the new hourly allowance kicks in.
But as someone rightly pointed out, this is an airline that ALSO hires expats. But ideally would love to do without them, if it could.
But wouldn't you do the same at YOUR workplace. Expats are a stop gap (albiet continous) process.
That point alone can make it a very very difficult decision to make. For all the roses and trimmings, it can sometimes be quite hostile.
Something you would like to think about.
Very seriously...

Try to make your point in a cohesive and understandable way if you want people to take anything you say seriously I figure that your reading comprehension is as bad as your writing skills since you miss the fact that you made the exact same point that I made, Singapore is expensive and that salary might seem like a lot but you will be working just to pay the bills, public transportation is not the answer for everyone, or would you want your infant child going to school in a public bus every day? Your wife going to the supermarket in a bus or taxi all the time? That gets old very quickly. A beer will run you less than 5 Sin dollars hum?

Been there..done that..

You will not need a car in Singapore unless you have a status issue...If you do want want one you are wasting your money and time...taxi and bus fares are excellent and the rapid transit is a dream to use...my wife never minded taking a taxi and the booking system is excellent. In some cases the condo complex you might possibly end up living in has a shuttle bus that runs past various popular shoppping malls...cars are a pain in the butt to own in the island paradise and it's no secret that it's expensive if you buy on impulse... but try to shop wisely and you'll be fine!
