Been there..done that..
You will not need a car in Singapore unless you have a status issue...If you do want want one you are wasting your money and time...taxi and bus fares are excellent and the rapid transit is a dream to use...my wife never minded taking a taxi and the booking system is excellent. In some cases the condo complex you might possibly end up living in has a shuttle bus that runs past various popular shoppping malls...cars are a pain in the butt to own in the island paradise and it's no secret that it's expensive if you buy on impulse... but try to shop wisely and you'll be fine!
