Alexander & King, please keep in mind that Singapore has been experiencing a lot of
inflation and has become a very expensive place to live. I've been going to SIN for years and it's amazing how expensive it has gotten over the last 2-3 years.
Lot's of nervous investors are looking for safe havens like Singapore to live and park their money and have pushed up prices a lot, notably in real estate. Like Switzerland, Singapore is focusing more and more on becoming an international finance hub and it seems that high prices (think London, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Monaco etc) are part of the deal.
It's really a no-brainer to see why SIA uses a specially configured A380 with a
business class only upper deck on the SIN-ZRH / LHR-SIN routes.
